Any reports of scratching? Screen is plastic, I gotta believe it will scuff a lot compared to gorilla glass? I haven't seen this addressed/speculated in reviews I've read.

Switched to Verizon and tested out the HTC One m9 for a week while I had the Nexus 5x on order. It is aesthetically pleasing, beautifully made, and very nice speakers. I used the Google now loader and the performance was pretty meh. Same with the camera.

I thought the 5x would be larger, but its actually the perfect size for me. And the plastic doesn't feel cheap at all. Couldn't be happier with it.

I try to return the phone. Seller says suck it. Swappa says "not our problem". Paypal says they see nothing wrong (!?!?!).

Sigh.
I had some bad luck w/ Swappa as well. Last year bought my dad a used iPhone 5 for $220 or so. Died 2 months later =/

I just used swappa for the first time, but I was a seller. Sold my mint oneplus one for $180 as opposed to the best trade in offer I could find of $104.

Everything went smoothly, but I'd be more hesitant as a buyer. You can just try to purchase from people who have sold multiple phones with a good rating/rep, which should help some.

Use a 3rd party launcher. Nova is excellent, and was what I used for years. Now I'm using Action Launcher but I'd still recommend Nova for people who want something similar to stock, just with the ability to customize.

Hey guys, Signal (formerly TextSecure) from Open Whisper has released a beta desktop version. You can sign up for it here https://whispersystems.org/blog/signal-desktop/

Unfortunately right now it can only handle desktop-to-Android for whatever reason, but it's still in beta so hopefully soon.

This would be enough to get me to switch off Telegram.

Just restored my S3 files to S4. One issue was when I transferred my messages the group messages all separated into individual threads. I am using textra. Any thoughts on how to recombine these? I thank you.

Nova Launcher Premium on sale for $0.99 on the Google Play Store. I had not made the upgrade to premium, but for a dollar it was a no brainer. I dont even know what the premium features are.

I bought some Chinese Android phone (Oppo brand) which is supposed to be a fairly decent phone. It came with Android 4.3 however, and when I click System Update it has a 90mb upgrade with some stability improvements but that's it. It's called "ColorOS" and it says it's based on Android.

I am a total Android noob, but 4.3 sounds really old? How do I get rid of the standard OS it came with and upgrade to the latest clean version? Or do I have to stick with whatever the system provides me?

color OS is based on android, 4.3 is a bit old but it doesnt matter much since 5.0 sux mostly and 6.0 is still pretty new.

give us your actual model of phone and i m sure we can figure out wich rom would be the best.
You might have to get a custom rom tho since i ve no clue if oppo do some decent update work.

"some Chinese Android phone" is not what you should be buying if you care about updates. So yes, 4.3 is old, but I wouldn't be surprised if the phone is never officially updated by the manufacturer.

If you are technically savvy, you might be able to root your phone and flash a custom ROM that is a newer version, but if you go that route you should make sure you know what you're doing. For that, I'd recommend starting on the XDA sub-forum for your phone.

Oppo isn't a random Chinese brand it's where one plus one come from and color Os is the replacement of cyanogen on one plus one. Depending on the actual model of the phone you can at worse flash a cyanogen rom

Thanks, good info. I am tech savvy, just never worked an Android before. Mostly I just really dislike all the random crap it comes with, so I'd like a fresh/clean install.

1) no (unless your tablet has a sim card and then you sign into a different whatsapp account).

2) no idea. did you install it from the play store? if so: try uninstalling and reinstalling or contact the developer

3) NO!

4) it depends start out with google "essential android tablet apps" and go trough a few lists. but it really depends too much on your needs.

I want to pick up a used tablet mostly for reading articles, watching TV shows, etc. I want a bigger screen (maybe 9 or 10" ). What's the best value device if you're mostly looking at 2014 devices but would also consider 2013?

The 8.4" Galaxy Pro Tab I got as a refurb about a year ago has been great for me. About the perfect size allowing one hand reading/internet in portrait but big enough to watch video on too.

The S Tab 8.4 is probably better but might be more expensive too. I'd definitely recommend start looking with one of these then consider stuff like the N9 and whatever Sony called their flagship tablet then etc.

IMO for tablets the specs, manufacturer and such doesn't matter much. Get the right size with a good screen on a reasonably up to date OS. A 2014 flagship will be great value for money with few downsides v 2015 flagships.

Woah yea you definitely are. Where are you finding them so cheap? Looks like $180-220 is the Ebay range.

FYI in case you're not aware: Nexus 4 is not 4g.

Any thoughts on current generation non-big phones? Nexus 5X vs Galaxy S6 for example? Is there anything else?

I liked the G4 a lot and currently liking the V10 as well, but it's really just a bigger G4 (I think the 2nd screen is dumb). I'm in a position where I have some phone freedom and I'd like to try something smaller.
