Don't think he ever left Asia and just returned to Macau. Unfortunately for Durrrr I think you can only be outside the US for 6 months at a time.

I don't think there's anything like that in US laws. He could live outside the USA for the rest of his life. The 6 month rule may be for Resident Aliens (ie. Green Card).

Are you seriously saying that Americans cannot be outside the US for more than 6 months?

Think about it a little bit.

Seriously?

Guantanamo? Don't be silly. The American government considers its citizens to be far too free to allow them the right to travel to Cuba. Allowing them to choose their own travel destinations would be a violation of their freedom.

I think he means you can't be working outside of the US longer for 6 months without permission of the IRS.

Yeah, to be honest I'm not up to date on this info at all and therefore probably should not have said anything. As I recall, Americans used to have to first travel to Canada or Mexico before entering Cuba. Cuba had nothing against them coming, in fact Cubans are quite pleased to see American tourists, but it was always the American government preventing them from going there (which was the real point of my post I think). But it is very possible that the situation has improved and Americans are not free to travel directly to Cuba. I'm old now, my post could very well be a decade late.

I don't know about the USA, but in canada you can't be out of the country for more than 6 months. It has nothing to do with work as my grandfather has been retired for 25 yrs, he travels around the world and stays in florida for winter, but never more than a total of 6 months.
