Having a cop team who's sole purpose is to confiscate the public's money is beyond corrupt and should be illegal. I hope they get 7 figures in punitive damages.

It's disgusting to hear 2+2ers say that this isn't stealing.

Illegally taking a thing from someone under the threat of force is the legal definition of robbery.

That is exactly what civil forfeiture is.

yea pretty strange that ppl who play a game that is illegal in most places for no reason also would not care about a drug that is illegal in most places for no reason.

if you want to be able to take ppls stuff for being a drug dealer then you should have to prove it in court.

“IF IN DOUBT…TAKE IT!” Behind Closed Doors, Government Officials Make Shocking Comments About Civil Forfeiture
There are three kinds of people in this world: Those who’re outraged by civil forfeiture, those who don’t know what it is and those who profit from it.

According to the article, it will be a lot harder for local and state police to use federal law to seize assets. Not sure if this will help the poker players' lawsuit (if it's still ongoing)

Only an idiot keeps that kind of money on them if acquired legally.

Being an idiot is not against the law.

And cops have been using these laws all around the country to also seize small dollar amounts, including amounts smart people would carry.

New News:

Attorney General limits police ability to seize assets He limits seized-asset sharing process that split billions with local, state police

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Friday barred local and state police from using federal law to seize cash, cars and other property without warrants or criminal charges.

The decision follows a Washington Post investigation published in September...

The Post found that local and state police routinely pulled over drivers for minor traffic infractions, pressed them to agree to warrantless searches and seized large amounts of cash without evidence of wrongdoing. The law allows such seizures and forces the owners to prove their property was legally acquired in order to get it back.

Even if I don't have anything illegal I would never let a cop search my car. It's none of their business what is inside. I think you have to let them search the car though or they impound it which is bull****. They had no reason to pull this guy over, they just used him not signaling as an "excuse" to pull him over. The cop wanted to pull him over before he "failed to signal" so I don't think that should be justified. Seems kind of twisted. The cops reasoning was he had a "red car" which is such a dumb excuse.

Ever since 9/11 Fascism has been on a rise in the USA.
Sadly, the vast majority of our american friends took the blue pill long ago so at this point it's probably too late to do anything about it other then moving to other country.
Actually, that might not be enough, to really break the shackles you would need to change your nationality.

You have the wrong war. The current spate of civil forfeiture was part of the War on Drugs. There's a brief history here. Probably also on wikipedia.

Quote:
Modern civil forfeiture use then exploded during the early 1980s as government at all levels stepped up the war on drugs, and Congress and the states created new incentives for the use and arguably the abuse of civil forfeiture. For most of American history, the proceeds from forfeitures went not to the law enforcement agencies responsible for the seizures but to the government’s general fund. However, in 1984, Congress amended portions...
We've been trading a little freedom for a little security for much longer than you think.

This is an old case, not to mention they were given the cash back. (minus legal fees)

Recently Eric Holder has changed civil asset forfeiture law.

Do you have any news or court sources that say they got the money back? the only thing I can find are news stories from last October about the case being filed.
