It happens in chess when a player thinks his opponent won't know how to respond correctly. A superior player will do this often against an inferior one. It will also happen between two GM's for surprise value, complicating a position etc.

How much is DN up since they started the second batch of 12.5k hands? What's his bb/100?

Hi gfm, the only metric that matters is the amount that DN is up since his last losing hand. As you suggest, he is not losing.

Doug won just over half a buy in, in the last session. Not sure that qualifies as a spanking.

Those are exploits against their opponents and are actually designed by the player because the player feels it gains them an advantage against their opponent.

My post was more so referring to these type of examples in incomplete information games:

1) a guy that never folds a hand preflop in poker because he feels like it.
2) a person that stands on a hard sixteen in blackjack against a dealers up card ten because they'd rather hope the dealer busts
3) a person that sees a flop with 78dd no matter the preflop price because it's their favorite hand
4) a person that folds a clearly profitable shove late in a tourney because they are scared of busting out and they'd rather wait and hope for something better.

The list goes on but the difference is these type of mistakes are often innately known by the player making them yet they intentionally make them anyway for a variety of personal reasons.

The same sort of intentional losing play doesn't really happen in chess because the player doesn't feel any difference in emotion from making those sort of plays because all the information is on the board.

However, if you have AK, the chances someone will have AA or KK is 1/2 what it would be without the blocker. If you have AK and there is an ace on the board AA is strongly blocked. Only 1 of 6 combinations of AA is still available. If you have Ac and there are 3 clubs on the board, you completely block the nuts.
the problem isn't with the terminology it's with how you frame "running bad". having a blocker is a small part of why he lost that much. if we wanted to be really anal, doug rolling a number on his randomizer that lead to him making a very low probability overbet is a much bigger deal than having the blocker (a relatively common occurrence).

... i think we're all a little bit dumber for having participated in this conversation.
