He got rich by deceiving companies into believing they faced a hostile takeover attempt and scaring them into buying their stock from him at a high price. Sure there were people who lost money as a result of his actions, just like people do all the time in the markets, but it's not like he Madoff'd anyone or scammed seniors out of their retirement savings. Many people who know about such things thought he was guilty of nothing but making a profit in genuine-but-failed takeover attempts which benefited all investors.

Looks like he got off on the criminal case, mainly because of his "celebrity". He pled the felony explosives charges down to misdemeanor failing to extinguish a fire. His sentence is to make a PSA about what not to do on public land. Amazing things happen when you can hire David Chessnoff.
