Anyone with a family care to comment?
I've got 2 kids, living in the Lower Mainland as well. I think your number is higher than ours, but not radically so. $10 K sounds relatively high and should be easily trimmed; $8 K is a little leaner, and if I sat down and figured it out more carefully than I usually do, is probably pretty close to our expenses.
If you sit down and just add up monthly expenses like rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, car(s), etc, you'd probably find $8-10 K to be high. But if you look at it on more of an annual basis and start factoring in all the other things you spend in a year, it adds up quickly. Clothes, birthdays, Christmas, school supplies, sports registrations, entertainment, etc...and that's not even thinking of travel.
I could easily see living for $6 K/month or less here fairly comfortably, but it might mean giving up things that OP would prefer not to.
