I currently live in Vancouver Canada and am a mid-stakes grinder. Just wanted to get people's thoughts and opinion because the cost of living is so high here and I'd like to feel like I'm getting ahead and saving for the future not just playing bills.
The cost of living seems about 25% higher here when compared to the USA not taking into account ridiculous housing prices. If you want to own a house here u have to take on debilitating life long debt. Obviously I chose to rent but my monthly bills for 2 young children and 2 dogs are in the 8-10k a month range which is what i make playing poker.
So where do you suggest I move? Good schools and safety are important as well. Nice weather is a bonus

what countries are you NOT interested. Places like Macau dont have any taxes on gambling.

England is good. Obviously the weather sucks, if you make 10k/pm Im assuming dollars thats about £6.5/pm here you would be living a very good life style.

yea i said 8-10k....I'm maxing out both kids education fund which the government matches plus they are both in montessori. These things add about 1200 a month to the expenses but overall I think my expenses are really high. I dont feel like im living like a king, mostly just working hard.

Yea taxes are a consideration of course that means i will have more disposable income and thus a better quality of life

I just read an article about retirement living in Phuket, Thailand for $1,000/mo. If that's true, it seems like your whole famile could live like kings for $5k/mo.

But dude, you live is a great country already. If it's too expensive, move out of the city. There's gotta be dozens of small towns and communities between Vancouver and Toronto where you can reduce you cost of living by 15-30%.

Definitely come up with a budget, if you haven't already, to try to trim it down to like 8-9k. You'd be surprised to see how many random things can add up each month.

I live in Suburbia right now....just put vancouver so more people would know where i was talking about. I agree there is no place like home but it is also nice to know you are able to get ahead if you work hard and not just break even.

If you aren't there already, moving South of the Fraser should improve both the housing expense and the weather.

Rent is 2k a month so if im going to stay here I need to cut the rent and trim expenses but that goes with out saying guys. No suggestions on places to move? Id like to buy a house so real estate prices are important. Have you looked at the mls?

If you can handle the 3rd world, I love Playa Del Carmen Mexico and its obviously a quick flight from the states.

With the proposed/pending changes to legislation I don't think Mexico is a viable option for someone looking to make a mid to long-term move.

Not sure why people are thinking OP has some out of line monthly nut - kids are expensive pets. Take away the kids and his effective expenses are like 60k-70k for the year, which isn't much for two people living in an expensive place like Canada, especially if he is doing things he should be doing like investing for the future and paying taxes.

rent in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth) for a family of four would be way more than 2k a month.
If you are clearing 8-10k a month you have some serious expenses other than your rent.
A lot of people find that whatever their disposable income is they find a way to spend it.

I really think you could cut expenses living where you are already. Pretty sure aus and europe will be the same or higher cost for the same lifestyle.

Except for the weather, Canada is one of the greatest countries on earth. LOL at needing $120k to live well. Do you think the average wage in Canada approaches that? Learn how to live like a Canadian...Move out of Vancouver, learn to cook, etc.

Seems like the best prospects for living cheaper in a good place to raise a family would be elsewhere in Canada (likely a big weather sacrifice unless you make it a small move) or in a cheaper area of the US, but you'll need to have a route to US residency to move there full-time.

Farther out in the Fraser Valley (Abbotsford, Chilliwack) would be cheaper housing and the smallest change otherwise. Kamloops or Kelowna would be worth consideration - colder winters, but nicer summers, and less rain. Same goes for Calgary. All would have much cheaper housing and probably much more feasible for you to buy something.

Also, you might want to check if any school districts have Montessori programs that don't cost extra, or that cost less.

You could live like a king in North bay, Ontario.
Yes it is kind of cold but only 3 hours from Toronto.

I live in Montreal.
Way cheaper then Vancouver.
7$ a day daycare for kids.
You can drop your kids of at school at like 7am and pick them up at 7pm (for 7$)
You could survive without a car (even with kids)
or buy a relative cheap house in suburbs.


Have you checked out pemberton.
They over built for the whistler winter Olympics.
You could rent a super nice house for a pretty good deal.
Most renters just want it for the winter...
