if you have a partner that doesnt make an income they should be finding ways to add value by cooking inexpensive meals, planning recreational activities that're free, downloading shows so you don't need cable, shopping around for bargains... etc. plus health care in canada is subsidized, mostly you just need to pay dental.

i think moving to a cheaper area is a good idea, but it seems like it's probably only part of the problem.
This was my main reason for making this thread. Poker is a risky business so I feel i need to saving a lot more then a person with a regular job. Will definitely be moving to a cheaper area of Canada if I decide to stay.

Do you guys do a lot of your shopping at Whole Foods for the organic produce? If you're willing to make two trips, you could save so much money by buying everything else at No Frills.

Student loans: $550
Grocery shopping + eating out: $1800 (450/week for 2 of us)

Dog related: $250 (food, vet, toys, etc. Bulldogs expensive ;()
Utilities: $550 (water, gas, electric, 2 Internets, cable)

This is $8050, once I pay taxes on it its now 10k + we travel, throw in 2 kids + paying for private school way way over 10k. Not saying there isn't lots of room to save, we just sold house and moved into $2,300/mo apartment in Vancouver, but still I don't think 10k is that unreasonable living in an expensive city + supporting wife + 2 kids + private school

Edit: this was my breakdown 2 months ago we've moved into slightly cheaper place + no car payment and cutting down on some other stuff, don't berate me too hard , but just saying I think 10k is easy from his POV

Edit2: also this was for Austin, TX. Significantly cheaper place to live than Vanc
Yo, you need to check out some frugal living books. Starting with shoot your dog and have him mounted. One time charge of $300.

This forum is not good to get this information. You need to check out the overseas retirement sites and magazines like http://www.internationalliving-magazine.com .

The clear answer should be to cut your expenses. I don't see how anyone could have 10/k mo living expenses while not living like an absolute king.

The budget someone posted above seems insane. $900 a mo. on insurance? $1800 a mo on food? $600 mo car payment? Even your utilities seem exceptionally high.

Start cooking your own meals, sell your BMW and buy a beater, and get rid of cable in favor of netflix.

How do you save for the future? How do you build your bankroll with those kinds of exorbitant expenses?

Most of the world gets by with MUCH less than 2.5k/mo and still is able to save for the future.

so tell us where the money goes... because 2k for rent isn't that high for rent.

and if you really wanted to you could find a cheaper place not too far away from where you currently live, which would really help your children out by... not severing ties with everyone they've ever known.

Not sure why people are thinking OP has some out of line monthly nut - kids are expensive pets. Take away the kids and his effective expenses are like 60k-70k for the year, which isn't much for two people living in an expensive place like Canada, especially if he is doing things he should be doing like investing for the future and paying taxes.
What are the proposed changes to mexico? That's currently one of my top spots to go.

well i figure its 1k per kid a month plus groceries 1500 and rent means we are at 5500 right there.
add in
dog insurance (yes i have it) 110
health insurance
renters insurance
dental
car maintenance/insurance
gas
gym membership
utilities are kinda bad - 200 electricity/200 cable
allergy shots
ADT
cell phones (Canada is the worst for this) we pay 250
all adds to 1800-2000

so we are at 7500

then u got entertainment, holidays, eating out, sports and activities, retirement savings, whatever for the rest

stuff comes up that u cant plan for

this family needs some austerity hehe

I do have significant savings invested but I'm just upset that my break-even point monthly has to be so high to live here.

You should really get a more accurate budget in order..

Do you have 2 kids or 4 kids? 1k/mo per child seems pretty high... I don't have any though so maybe im wrong. Do you buy each kid a brand new ipad every month? Also 1500/month on groceries seems really high. If you have a large family you should be buying in bulk which should bring your overall grocery bill down. You really need to work on your spending habits before you consider moving to an unknown area. Bad spending habits will follow you no matter where you move..

Read only the first post, and clicked the graph link. Here is what I can conclude from those two:

OP, I still cant believe my eyes that someone who beats NL at 5bb/100 is "dumb" enough to pay rent of $10000 per month.

Someone smarter then me please tell me what I am missing here, if I am missing something.

Edit: Still cannot believe someone who has made hundreds of thousands of dollars is RENTING a place.

most things on the list are too vague to critique, but the fact that you pay 200/month for cable and 250/month for 2 cell phones makes me think you're probably overspending on a lot of things.

from what you listed what's going to change by moving? rent will be maybe 500 less, groceries a couple hundred less but that's about it.

and it'll set you back a couple thousand in costs and hours of lost wages to commit to moving.

I was going to say the same to him, anyway I will expand a bit. Bangalore FTW.

I think India is an awesome place for you to move out. Its not as backwards as you might think. THere are excellent schools, comparatively very very cheap. You could live like a KING for 3K a month. I would suggest you look up a city like Bangalore (also known as Bengaluru). Its not too big and crowded, yet has the conveniences of a big city, nice places to party, all types of international cuisines, lot of malls and places to take ur family to, they have micro brews where you can sample fresh beer etc. lot of expats stay here and lot of IT companies have set up base here, so wont be hard to find your own local community, so basically it has a very cosmopolitan culture. You could def find a good deal on housing etc. Weather is pleasant throughout the year, people are friendly, and they have legal Poker rooms where the action is pretty soft.

is it more +EV to give your child a really good education but not have enough finances in later life to help your kids get started

or

is it more +EV to give them a sound education but have enough finances later in life so that when/if you do help them they are not stupid enough to blow it?

Thailand is quite cheap, the quality of living is excellent.
But visas are quite difficult to get for an online worker (you have to work around available options and while it's doable, it's not very legal) AND the general quality of education is abysmal. If you want a good international primary or high school for your kids, be prepared to pay the same fees as a top notch US university.

According to statistics available with the City Crime Records Bureau (CCRB), Bangalore, in 2012, recorded 75 rape cases, of which at least 46 cases were rape by inducement (including promise of marriage, jobs or other favours).

Although this does not involve forced sex as in the conventional understanding of the act, the Karnataka high court while hearing a recent case, held that women falling victims to such ploys by men can be considered victims of rape by inducement; and that such methods may include promise of marriage or offer of other favours in exchange for establishing sexual relations with the victim.
Clearly you are the one who should be worried about your wife being gang raped even before she steps out of the house. We protect our women better.

The big question for me is are you a Canadian? If so the USA is out as you can only stay there for 6 months and no online.

Reality is were ever you move will your expenses drop dramatically.

I think your best move is the interior of BC or the burbs once your wife is done school. Considered buying a duplex and creating an income property.

For me your food is out of line. Why you have life insurance on your wife is beyond me as you are the bread winner. What are your ages and amount of policies

Pets are pricey but worth it. Though seems high.

Personally I think with a little work you could cut that to $8000 but moving to the interior save even more. Though your original problem is your living in the nicest city in the world

Also were are your childcare expenses?

Fwiw Lozen I'm not the OP, so we're having our first kid in Jan but no childcare expenses. Were 26/27 life insurance policies are 1M/500k. Im american and she has French/swiss/us citizenship so can stay in US however long we want and have student and work visas for Canada currently (well we will in 3 days). I guess food is our main expense that's v high so I'll probably start tracking what we spend on it a bit more closely although my approach has always been to just focus on making more rather than saving more but I guess a good focus on both is ideal
