Why not look at one of the many other Canadian options before leaving the country all together? Vancouver is near the top of the cost of living so just move to another city or town in Canada that isn't so insane.

Saint John Canada, average cost of purchasing a house is 145,000. Reasonable expenses too.

Would def stay in Canada and just try and cut expenses, even if you move to a diff area. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Maybe over in BC I guess.

With you trying to raise a family I'm not sure if its worth going through the whole process of severing canadian ties

Find a more affordable place to live in canada

NZ AINEC

Cheap compared to most places, beautiful, minimal crime

A bit out of the way from the ROW though and most of the country would be susceptible to a megatsunami

No idea how to get a visa/residency if youre a poker player however, look it up!

We're Australia's Canada

I am not expert but If the US is an option have you thought about Vegas.

Since they have online poker u might be quite ok there, the weather is nice and living is cheap.

I think foreign countries might be expensive if you want English speaking but what about
Malta? I think English is an official language there, it is cheap and beautiful.
Otherwise why not go to Macau or, Thailand or something like that if you are ok with a real change.

Poker refugees is who you need to contact I think, they have moved a few hundred people and will likly be your best help and will be able to explain all the advantages and disadvantages.

Why not move somewhere that I can pay cash for a house and save a bunch of money month-to-month. I know where the cheap places are ie. mexico, thailand but I need to think about a good place to raise the family as well as cheapness.
Iv'e been too lethbridge, alberta and that area thought it was nice and good place to live.

Good point Gui and thx for contributing...uprooting and moving is a huge hassle and with the state of online poker being dicey to some degree in almost every country it is a risk. I'm going to have to do a ton of research before deciding and talking to poker refugess is probably a good idea.

I would love to live in vegas (already have a house there) if they had a significant player pool but I think that is a few years away still

thx for the suggestions guys but keep the sillyness to a minimum please

Have you been in Macau before? It's only good for gambling & drinking and noone except hotel staff and pitbosses speak English. I would rather raise my children in North-Korea than Macau.

I've never been, but it's on my list of places to go, and I expect it would be an awesome place to relocate to, from all I've seen and heard. The scenery reminds me a lot of BC, but all compacted into a much smaller area.

Also need to factor in taxes; not sure if you're paying them here or not (and I'm not asking). From what I've read, it's a bit murky whether Canadians need to pay tax - at your earning level, you're pretty clearly a professional, so I think some (most?) accountants will tell you that you need to be paying tax.

Overall, I'd agree with the suggestions that locating elsewhere in Canada might make the most sense. Unless...you are looking to raise your kids somewhere else to give them a taste of the world. If I wasn't feeling tied down here, moving to a couple different countries with the kids would've been pretty cool. Might be something my wife and I try once the kids are moved away.

How's your Spanish? I lived in Santiago, in the Dominican Republic for 11 years. I found it to be a friendly, safe environment with an amazingly low cost of living. I was paying $300/month for a 3 bedroom apartment in a gated, guarded (not that it was necessary) development. I am out of there almost 3 years. There are a few good schools where English is spoken. There are no taxes.

I don't think he would make anywhere close to 10k if he was to move to vegas unless he play on other offshore sites.

Hell no!

About 10 years ago I used to travel out to Ontario every month or two for work, for about a year. I had a trip or two to North Bay where the snowbanks were at least 6 feet high. I was told this wasn't terribly uncommon, as it was at the north end of the snow belt that ran from London, through Barrie, and up to North Bay. So when someone mentioned it ITT and I recalled my experiences there, I looked up their climate and found the average annual snowfall ranked pretty high among Canadian cities - 273.5 cm/year and 82.4 snowy days (according to Wiki) ranks them pretty high on this list:

It seemed a nice enough town back then; just don't go there expecting mild winters.

No, it's not. While the weather can be soul-destroying, there are many great small towns in the uk with an excellent standard of living. Just make sure to spend your pounds in the winter in southern Europe or South East Asia.

Hardly. Least populated place to which I've travelled. Really great country. Childishly expensive though.

Germany is a very good place to raise kids imo.

Education is good & free! Safety is no concern at all. Weather depends on the area. But as you can choose freely this isn't a problem either. Cost of living imo lower than Canada unless you choose to stay in a big city like Munich etc.

Negative: language barrier + probably very difficult to get visa / permanent residency.

Not sure how international health insurance costs compared to your current health insurance. This could be a big cost block.

Easy decision, Cumberland on Vancouver Island! I grew up in Dunbar/Kits and have spent 6 years in Australia. We couldn't afford a house in Van or Sydney so we bought one here. We have a 19 month old. The town is friggin awesome. Full of ex city people, lots working online in finance etc. Tons and tons of young families, great festivals, Mount Washington is 20 min drive away with one of the deepest bases in NA, amazing biking trails, sick lakes, rivers etc. Lots of cafes, restaurants bars for the size. And have Steiner schools etc. We've been here 3 1/2 years and love it! A nice house is about 350-400k
