Seems more likely to be a horrifying accident that may have been caused by recklessness but could also just be a freak accident. I wouldn't rule anything out without seeing a far more clear video (which I personally have no interest in viewing), but murder would be a pretty high bar to clear.

If you take a skate to someone's neck with that kind of force, you have to know that severe injury is the best case, and death is very possible. Just don't see a hockey player making such a decision out on the ice, and even though hockey players can get caught up in the moment and enraged at another player, to plan something like that on the spur of the moment would be pretty wild

I'm not sure how anyone could think this was intentional based on that video. When you go in the air, your feet rise up. Happens all the time in hockey. Just not with a skate ending up in someones neck.

In fairness, I woke up this morning and this story was all over the place on X, and the racial element is definitely part of the story there. So it already is part of the story on social media, whether you think it should be or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were Russian/Chinese agitators/bots behind the whole racial aspect.

In hockey people intentionally block and run into each other all the time. Looks like the defender was a little out of control and trying to intentionally make contact to take the other player down with him, which is a little dirty but more or less a nothing burger, and the skate coming up like that really was a freak accident.

I dont know that much about hockey, but you see stuff like that in soccer/basketball all the time, where a player on one team is losing balance and going down, and intentionally takes someone down with them, and it is a yellow card/Flagrant 1 at worst, and everyone just moves on.

UK police are investigating the incident, but haven’t said anything more than that.
