It's been confirmed in this thread that getting a Canadian drivers license is easy.

Keep us updated guys about if we need a canadian id. Also, if we provided proof with a bank statement do you think a po box would be an acceptable address or you think you need a physical address?

Looks like there will be a pokerplayer exodus, you guys need a leader.

Maybe Phil Ivey will lead you out of the U.S.A, through the wilderness to bad beat mountain, where the Poker God will reveal himself and offers those players an agreement: they can keep their favourite games and in return he will be their God. The Book of Equity tells how the players, led by their God, journey onwards, but when their spies report that the land is filled with sharks they refuse to go on.

The poker god then condemns them to remain in a desert where no fish reside until the generation that left the U.S.A. passes away.

And so it was written....

http://www.pokerstars.com/usaplayers/faq/ has up to date info.

As of now, cashouts might take weeks, they are not converting FPPs to cash and are deciding what to do with them, VIP statuses and VPPs will be restored to April 15 levels if U.S. players can move (not sure if there is a deadline on this), but Stars is requiring us to establish foreign residency and are disallowing players from simply travelling outside the U.S. to play.

We have to write them and let them know we expect full value for the FPPs we saved under a clear agreement as to their worth, as well as ask them to relax their standards for U.S. players who are willing to travel and play outside the U.S., but want freedom of movement and don't want to wade through time-consuming red tape to do it.

Here is an email I wrote:

There are many U.S. players who want to continue playing. Although we do not want you to break any laws, we would like you to allow U.S. citizens to play as long as we play from within countries where online poker is legal.

I want to travel to different countries for different time periods. According to your USA FAQ page I will not be allowed to play unless I establish residency in every country I go to. It is not clear on whether I can just establish foreign residency in one country and then travel to others without continually having to prove residency. That would be logistically impossible and will prevent alot of players from coming back to Stars.

We want to keep playing at Stars, but you are making it way too hard. Is it possible to relax your standards within the framework of the law and agreements with the DOJ to encourage U.S. players to come back?

Also, I hope you establish a fair means of dealing with those of us who have saved lots of FPPs under the agreement that we could trade them for cash bonuses.

Please help and encourage us to come back to Pokerstars by being practical and fair, in addition to legal.

They're not looking for someone to establish residency in multiple countries, as your "residency" is only for your base country. If on-line poker and by extension funding is permissible according to Stars within your base country, you can travel to another country where this is also the case. Just ask any high volume on-line Euro player who participated in one of the live Asian poker events, for example.

Marketing opportunity for someone to sell multi-socketed electrical adapters which can handle about 200 watts, and be easily disassembled for airport security to view inside without damaging.

As far as actually just getting into the Canada, a few people I've spoke with said border patrol can be a real pain and can turn you away for old things on your record.

Whats the chances of this happening for something over 10 years old and very minor?

Hey fwiw, I sent an email to Party Poker asking about playing on their site while out of country and using a non US bank account. This is what I got back:

There will be no problems to open a real money account and play while you are in Canada and you have a Canadian bank account.

Since they started following the law when it was immediately passed, I'd assume they consulted their lawyers about this. If they are able to do it I would see no reason why Stars/FTP be different.

Because Stars and FTP haven't completed the settlement phase yet?

Not really needed. My laptop brick, cell charger, and electric shaver all work from 100-240V automatically. Just need a dumb adapter so the prongs fit.

FWIW, getting into Canada is a hell of a lot easier than getting into the US. I've traveled over the boarder dozens of times (I'm American and had a Canadian girlfriend), and almost without fail, the Canadians waved me in with a smile, but the Americans roughed me up on the way back just about every time. (Once on the way back in, my trunk was jammed, and rather than let me jimmy it open with a screwdriver to show them I didn't have any drugs or dead hookers, they proceeded to let me sit in customs for hours while theye began taking my car apart.)

There's a very specific list of things you'll get turned around for. They don't turn people around "just because." Speeding tickets? You're fine. DUI? It might be a hassle. Jaywalking? Come on in. Serial Arson? Not unless you're going somewhere reeeally cold.

I'm sure you can spend some time with google and figure it out - "I was convicted of xxxx, can I cross the border into Canada?"

What if you're a clean cut middle aged white guy with an expensive sports car jammed to the gills with clothes and computer stuff?

Are they gonna freak out because it looks like everything I own is in the car?
Or be ok with it because it looks like I have money?

Prices for international moving companies, their reps, TOSs, etc. are quite variable. I had enough information to make a decision in under four weeks for an overseas move involving 1/4 container load. It's got to be simpler to pay several hundred dollars to a professional moving van company. Obviously everyone's situation is unique though.

From what I can gather, seems like if you're trying to just cross the border with no visa, they'll turn you back. Probably better to just pack 1 suitcase, say you're visiting x for 5 days and then coming back, and then shipping the rest of your junk.... Or you could sign up for some class, get student visa and then I assume they'd kinda have to let you through regardless of how much stuff you had?

FWIW I did this (three times!) without any problems whatsoever. When I moved from Michigan to New York I crammed all the stuff in my car and off I went (the route is shorter than going south through Ohio and all of NY).

However, if they get the impression you're moving in, you'll have problems. My roommate tried moving in with his Canadian girlfriend (I rented from him in a house in upstate NY) and he went back and forth for awhile, but once when he tried to take a bunch of stuff over, they stopped him, turned him around, and told him he couldn't come back over the boarder without proof of residence in the US, proof of employment, etc.... basically to prove he had legit reasons to stay in the U.S. and wasn't moving to Canada.

My guess is you can pull it off, if you legitimately look like a professional. If you have a few neatly packed suitcases and a laptop, it's conceivable you're on some sort of extended trip.

If you look like a college student and your car is packed to the ceiling with cardboard boxes with labels like "porn" "bongs, etc." and "firearms and hunting gear (box 2 of 3)" you may have an issue.

I guess the best advice I can give is, don't do illegal ****. Find out what's legal and what isn't, and then go for it. The easiest way to avoid suspicion is to not do anything suspicious.
