A. when you wire money to the rio you can draw against your account anytime...I saw someone say that you can only use it for gaming purposes and that is incorrect.

B. Although after staying at the Rio for the past 3 years I am not its biggest fan...Cafe Martarano's is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. All-American is open 24 hours and it has good burgers/sandwiches and bar food kind of stuff also.

Biggest advice is no matter how close the rio looks, don't walk that goddamn bridge. I walked it at 2 in the morning with 10k in cash to register the main event last year, def up there with stupidest ideas of my life.

I think I'd rather walk it at 2 am with 10k cash than at noon with $100. probably down to only 95 degrees by then!

I usually don't seek out italian places. Never been to Il Molina. If you want incredible italian though, go to Bartolotta.

Don't know what percentage of that actually goes to the dealers, though.

Edit: And for the ME specifically: "4.2% of the total entry pool will be withheld for entry fees, and 1.8% of the total entry pool will be
withheld for tournament staff"
This is misleading, the "take-out" is from the prizepool, so 1500 for example is actually 1350+150, which is over 11% rake

never, ever walk that bridge imo. I might just be a country boy, but there is never a safe time to walk that overcross.

go off-strip for the majority of your food(yelp, urban-spoon, plus all the 2p2 advice will make it worth a cab), use your vouchers on crap to help cover cab costs.

meet up with as many 2p2er's as you can. I've never met a regular poster I didn't like.

play cash games anywhere and as often as you can.

excited to maybe meet some posters.

edit: pro tip, do not bust before 7pm because not only will you have lost the tournament, but you have to drive back to where you're staying in a 120+ degree car which is much worse imo.

I think you're overstating the dangers of walking across this well-lit, well-populated bridge. Funkii is right, the time to walk this bridge, if any, is at night. The first time I played the main event (back in 2006) I walked from Rio to Monte Carlo when Day 1 ended, because **** waiting in a 200-person cab line. Got back drenched in sweat (but it was good exercise).

idk why everyone is so anxious to avoid the bridge. I walked it often during my 12 night stay last year, and I never even had a situation where I felt awkward. Most of my trips were before 10 pm and I didn't carry more than 1k or so on me, but I was alone and often on my cell and didnt get bothered at all. I guess if you have >1k on you it should be no problem to get a cab, but I kinda like the "exercise" when you're sitting on a table for so much of your time.

I guess i'm a bit desensitized because I work with diagonosed psychos with violent tendencies and have been in some rough neighborhoods, but seriously guys it's Vegas. Not quite Gary-Indiana or Compton.

I've heard of people getting robbed in the parking lot over by the tournament area at the end of a night....the best advice would be just to use your heads and not really go anywhere alone/without other people around etc...if so just take a cab.

also (thinly veiled brag) the security guys at the rio happen to be very accomodating, and if you have a decent amount of $ on you they will literally walk you to almost anywhere you need to go on the property

Should I bring a car? Is it worth it to rent a car?
YES. You will go crazy if you never leave the strip. People tell me all the time that they don't like Vegas because they come to the wsop every year and never leave the Rio or the strip for the 2 months they're here. You're missing out on what Vegas has to offer without it, and the cabs really add up! Contrary to popular belief, this is not a place where you can really walk from place to place easily. It's very hot and casinos are gigantic.

Note to self, bring car to move around in casino

Sorry gobbo, don't want to turn this into yet-another-tipping-thread, but would you be willing to share what YOU think is appropriate or have done in the past? We all know that whatever-you-want/it depends is the answer, but it'd be kinda cool to hear real numbers from someone we all respect. I'm the kind of guy who usually tips 20-25% in restaurants I frequent, so I'm not a cheapskate, but with the rake/staff withhold, plus trying to approach poker playing as a business, I'm not as comfortable being a generous tipper on tournaments. You know your restaurants and you seem like a righteous dude, so I'm guessing you're fairly generous tipping waitstaff, and I'm guessing that your standards for tournament tipping are pretty close to what I'd want to do. But, if you're not comfortable announcing specifics about your tipping to the world, I get it, consider the subject dropped.

I tip very generously in restaurants/cabs/etc, but I personally have a policy of not tipping extra if gratuity is included, which is the case here. You definitely shouldn't feel bad for leaving no tip if it's taken out for you (which it is at wsop), but if you are feeling generous, there's obviously nothing wrong with leaving one

also I think generally for poker tournaments it makes way more sense to have it taken out of the prize pool since no one knows what's standard (i.e. people go out to eat all the time and know how tipping works, people don't win poker tournaments all the time, and it can be really stressful not knowing what you're supposed to do when you're asked for a tip)

if there is money withheld from a prizepool on top of what the rake is you can not tip and feel perfectly fine about it in any tournament.
