You always name these people that I've barely heard of.

Then I Google them and find out that they're Canadian.

I was under the impression that Tegan and Sara's latest album was quite large in the States, but I admittedly didn't do any research to confirm that.

Actually it does look like it did well. I've heard their name. I'm just not familiar.

That Pat Patterson thread could be the worst one on the internet. And yet I keep opening it.

Because mets started the thread. Blame mets.

Mets is like the least of the culprits of that thread, though I'm surprised he didn't realize that Patterson was gay since he seems like a relatively enthusiastic fan of early wrestling.

Okay, I'm pretty obliterated right now, but I easily put Tegan and Sara in my top 5 conceerts of all time. I go to a lot of concerts.

I would like to know what type of people rate movies on IMDB. Last night, I watched Fatal Attraction and really enjoyed it, thought it would get an 8 on IMDB. 6.9? Boo. Also, Jaws 3D is on their list of best shark movies? Wut?

I always thought that LeBron vs. MJ thread was pretty awful in SE. Yeah, there's some great posters in there that have forgotten more than I will ever know about basketball, but most of it is pretty awful imo.

IMDb ratings are an elite guideline. You just have to get experience and know how to read them.

Dramas
Rating of 8 or better: movie is almost always good, often great.
Rating of 7-7.9: movie is almost always at least worth one watch, often good, sometimes great.
Rating of 6-6.9: movie is a gamble, could suck but it has a fair number of people out there that really like it so you could too. A little less than a coin flip to be truly good, and unlikely to be great, but it does happen.
Rating below 6: movie very likely sucks, probably don't watch it, certainly have low expectations if you do.

Comedy/Action
Rating of 8 and above: far less common rating than drama, but it happens. As with above, usually good, often great.
Rating of 7-7.9: this is a pretty huge number for comedy and action. This signals a good movie a big chunk of the time.
Rating of 6-6.9: Still a good chance of being good. Dramas under 7 are more of a gamble, but tons of good and even great comedies get into this 6-6.9 range because senses of humor diverge more wildly than interpretations of what is good drama and what isn't.
Rating of 5.5-5.9: movie probably isn't good, but you'll occasionally find something watchable in here as long as you can tell up front that it's a non-serious type of movie that serious critics would thumb their nose at.
Rating below 5.5: yeah sorry, almost nothing below this mark is any good.

I haven't seen Fatal Attraction, so I can't really comment on that specifically.

Also Jaws 3-D gets a 3.5, a woefully awful rating.

Thanks.

I thought people might be trolling me because some of my favorite movies have average ratings, but now it makes sense.

Watch Fatal Attraction, it's really good.

For me it's a better rating system than Rotten Tomatoes. I just know to look at the movie's chances of being good from a probability standpoint rather than expecting it to exactly mesh in my view with the rating that it's given on there.

I've been using IMDb for a lot of years as a guideline on what to watch, and while there's the occasional rating that's downright goofy, to me it's the best overall measure to use.

One more thing on those ratings is that when a movie first comes out in the theater, you can safely assume that the initial rating it's getting is inflated and that it's coming down from there to a more reasonable number. The initial ratings are naturally biased toward being especially positive because it's a selection of people who cared enough to go out and see it on opening weekend, and obviously those people are predisposed toward being fanboys. Also people go out and see stuff and then are more likely to give the extreme rating of 10 that should rarely be given out, because (as we also see with wrestling ratings), the thing that a person just saw is the new GOAT.

So true. I remember when I first saw the movie "Invincible" I thought it was the GOAT sports movie. Later, I read the book and upon watching the movie again, realized that it was nowhere close to GOAT. And while it's still a movie I enjoy, I won't go out of my way to watch it. Same thing with "The Blind Side." While still a good movie, not GOAT.

The Room-3.5 on imdb.

A GOAT movie of all time is only a 3.5?

If you have to ask, then you don't need to know. It's the room.
