Merchandise may say otherwise.

My gut feeling is they're setting up HHH to be the monster heel, which is the right move because he is a great monster heel.

Merchandise gets talked about ITT as if it's the only way wrestling companies make money. Gate, buyrate, ad revenue (based on TV ratings)...those things have to matter, right? They're not just all overpowered by merch? This is a sincere question; I don't know how the income breaks down for a company like WWE.

Meh. He was. He's stale no matter what he is now; I hoped that his new role would change that, but I'm convinced that it hasn't.

Merchandise and PPV buys are 1-2 AFAIK.

HHH hasn't really been a monster heel for a few years, though. I think it can work well.

(Note: I've always been a heel HHH fan.)

This was discussed and broken down not long ago ITT when WWE released their financials. I will look up the post during a commercial break if you can't find it. But you are correct as far as I remember, live event ticket sales are still the biggest money maker.

Merchandise might be doing well, I don't know for sure, but it just can't be good for a company's business when people tune in right now and see that the two guys main eventing SummerSlam are both getting mixed reactions that lean negative. SummerSlam has to be the third best opportunity of the year to get casual fans to tune in and possibly buy the show.

If that's true, I apologize for my ignorance. And that means Punk should be the top guy.

Taking a closer look at WWE's income statement, which shows 2008-2010, right now. Some of these numbers are very revealing and paint a much darker picture than the numbers reported by WO. Some interesting tidbits:

Live event revenues have been pretty steady, as have live merchandise sales. Ad revenues are actually way down from last year and only represented 1% of total net revenue in 2010, so its not like creating a PG product just to satisfy advertisers makes a major difference.

PPV net revenues have been decreasing by about 10% annually. That is not a good sign. The OnDemand service has also dropped significantly, but that revenue isn't much (4.6m in 2010).

Licensing for video games, toys, music, books, and other **** have bounced around, going from 60.5m in 2008 to 44.7m in 2009 and back up to 51.7m in 2010.

Home video net revenues have taken monster hits over the last two years. 58.5m in 2008 to 39.4m in 2009 to 32.1m in 2010. Magazine revenue has decreased about 10% annually as well.

WWE.com made 15 ****ing million dollars last year, JUST THE WEBSITE. And that number is LOWER than the last two years. Ugh. WWEShop.com has once again seen a 10% decrease in revenue each year.

They got a nice boost in revenue in 2010 from the ****ty movies they pumped out. According to this, the releases of See No Evil, The Marine, The Condemned, 12 Rounds, Behind Enemy Lines 2, and The Marine 2 contributed 19.6m in revenue, about 2.5x more than 2009 but still less than 2008. Unfortunately the cost for creating 19.6m in revenue for the movies was 19.2m, so LOL VINCE.

Revenues generated outside the US gained some steam in 2010 after a drop in 2009.

They have a section called "Risk Factors" which includes this section which is hilarious to me:

Other than that fun fact, basically this entire section reads as "everything we do has huge risks that we can't prepare for nor are liable for, if **** hits the fan tough titty".

One of the big reasons 2010's net income is up is that they slashed a lot of expenses related to staff and administration. They went from 127.8m in expenses in 2009 to 109.4m.

So in summary, things aren't as peachy as those earlier numbers make things seem to be. Revenues are down across the board and not really showing any signs of improvement. WWE blames everything on the economy, of course. Here's the link for others who want to look through it, its pretty interesting:

Miz has been notching a lot of clean wins lately. It would make me think they're putting him back in the world title scene, but I can't see any room for him.

wwe really needs to get rid of the nickelback theme.

On one hand I think a move to Smackdown might help Miz get in a title picture ... on the other hand, it's much better to be on RAW IMO.

They need to be pushing Ziggler like they're pushing Miz right now. An intercontinental champion that is - wait for it - really ****ing hard to ever beat in a match. It's a novel concept from like 10 years ago that they could stand to revisit.
