Yeah, I keep thinking that too. I'd like to think that there are pretty significant differences between the two stories, but who knows.

DERB was spooky dude.

Went there, but didn't get the tasting cause my partner in crime was lame .

IIRC, it turned out that DERB was way ahead of his time in a lot of aspects of LHE, though he also just did some ******ed ****. Am I just totally misremembering?

It was definitely some of each. He frequently gave way too much action when obviously beat, including paying off the river in utterly hopeless spots. The preflop play everyone was so shocked by was closer to right than we all thought at the time, but if you dropped 2005 DERB in a 2011 Stars 9 handed 30/60 game, he'd definitely be the loosest reg in the lineup and he'd probably be losing.

For reference, I was ~14 VPIP at the time, which was toward the tight end of the spectrum but not the nittiest player beating 100/200. He was 30. I think all of the best players now are high teens to low twenties.
03-07-2011 , 02:44 AM
Yeah. I guess the question is if he was actually running hot or if he was really just +EV in those games because people were too way too nitty back then.

He was probably beating the games. As far as I could tell, anyone with a pulse was beating those games. I was awful and I was crushing.

Played a few 100 hands with blinky, doubt hes cheating

he actually seemed to play quite well, and it doesnt surprise me at all that hes raping some people

I mean playing "too many" hands pre-flop was like the nut characteristic of all the old dragons. Nowadays it's a huge mistake because even mediocre regs are competent post-flop.. but when you literally can open twice as many hands from position X and of that 2nd half of extra hands in your range, >50% of them are profitable, you're likely going to make more money than the guy opening the nitty range even though you're opening J3s and losing with it.. (because you're opening J5s and J6s and winning with them twice for every time u lose with J3s.. etc..) The guys who stumbled upon this and crushed yet weren't theoretically sound enough to understand why/when it stopped being optimal (financially) were the ones that ran into problems down the road.

assuming no hotel budget get something central around or on leicester sq so you are near to shows/shops/clubs etc, though the prices are enough to make even travelling tourney pros blanche usually unless you want to stay in a shoebox...

What do you want to do in terms of clubs/shows/restraunts? Main listings for all areas are on viewlondon.co.uk, something like http://www.london-eating.co.uk/occasions/michelin.asp is good for restraunts reviews/reservations. Most of the fancy nightclubs are around that ares or in Kensington, lots of sites like http://www.viplounge.co.uk will put you on guest lists and give ideas. Theres also superclubs like Ministry of Sound etc or private members clubs if you know ppl here. Tons of hsnl/other pros living here now too for tax reasons. PM if you want more info...

While the tasting menu was delicious, some of the dishes we saw around us and especially the modern sushi (of which we got some of on the menu) were (or looked) so good that i personally regretted not just getting those for our meal.

FWF,
Def see a show. As far as restaurants (if you're looking at the michelin star list posted above), if you want to go all out, marcus wareing is amazing. My favourite is probably the ledbury though. I have more recommendations if you need/get more specific, or check out harden's.

I wouldn't recommend seeing a Muscial such as Les Mis or Wicked, since I'm sure Ariel can find a very similar substitute in New York.

I feel like I'm getting angled here, but would I seem like a douche declining? It's their fault for posting, right? They'd prolly just grim me out of spite.

I guess I'm just asking how the "Trade blinds?" etiquette works. Seems like a ******ed practice to me.
I completely agree,"Trading Blinds" is very stupid and while some people will honestly just "Trade" no matter what hand they have, others will angle like you stated. The only fair and logical way is too play 2 hands and move on.

You're talking about bldswtrs, samo, lolotrickedu, and am I forgetting one?

IIRC, bld and lolo would be pretty tight by todays standards.

I don't know thejoker. IIRC, B Buddy was also not particularly loose. H@ll was, but nothing DERB level. Samo was legitimately DERB level loose. He was well over 40vpip in 6max.
