I guess the outside was supposed to look kind of like The Bike where the valet is, but it seemed like a poor mock up (the interior looks nothing like The Bike, though I haven't been there in about 5 years). The closest casino to the aerial shots is Commerce, unless I have the perspective reversed. If the perspective is reversed, it would definitely be from the perspective of where The Bike is.

It would appear that they gave the redeeming qualities to the gangster, Frank might be this season's Marty.

Nothing is ever gonna touch season 1, we know that. But to me these actors already seem better than I ever expected them to be when they announced their names. I frankly really disliked the choices, and all but one so far is outdoing what I had hoped they'd be able to do. Apparently things pick up by E3, so I'm looking forward to it. But yeah, admittedly E1 was cheesy.
The reality is its just 1 episode. It could get mind blowing amazing 3 or 4 episodes in. It just seems clear that there will be a drop-off in the story, writing, and directing. This is a brand new show each year. Odds were long that NP could keep hitting home runs at each at bat, especially now that he is running the entire show and not kind of splitting creative duties with Cary.

The actors seem solid...just not sold on the characters at the moment.

All,

Re: the bj, regardless of the Viagra etc, it seemed obv to me he didn't go through with it because then he wouldn't have written her a ticket and there would be no complaint/incident.

The scene with her father was filmed in Palos Verdes, so nowhere near Ventura (I know because I got married there/cool story). Don't think that matters for the show though, they can just pretend that chapel is located somewhere further north.

I'm re-watching intro on youtube and can't figure out how the hell that song is supposed to fit in with visuals.

Other than that, good ep with nothing really to pick on.

I didn't recognize the area, but kind of felt they were going for a Malibu type vibe while not being in Malibu.

I don't really know the words that song, but it has been stuck in my head this afternoon.

You know what was a great detective show set in California?

Terriers, maybe I'll just rewatch Terriers and pretends it's True Detective season 2.

At the risk of going full Season One and further AIDSing up this thread....

But at least in a different way.

Burn-out hippy says camwhore daughter's name is "Athena" and refers to her as goddess of love. Angry cop daughter, who is named Antigone (not at all subtle a name for an angry cop if you've read the play), doesn't correct him.

So either:

- Production ****ed up (Athena is not the goddess of love).
- Father is an even bigger fraud/burn-out (Antigone probably doesn't give a **** about correcting him).

it was my understanding that she broke her parole/probation again after that and then started squealing about the police because they were probably gonna throw her in jail or w/e. cause you're right, it wouldn't make sense if he both wrote her the ticket and took the bribej

The scene was he caught her, she propositioned him, he signed, smash cut to the boss telling him about the complaint.

The implication is that it was later that same day, he wrote her a ticket, she angrily made up the story that he propositioned her because she was angry about him writing the ticket.

Anything more complicated than that is going off the reservation.

These characters....not very interested in. Very standard cliched characters. Why do I care about them? I can see how they don't want to repeat themselves but how hard is it to have some of the police having some redeeming qualities.
This, exactly. Like 90% of the cultural impact of True Detective S1 was "time is a flat circle".

The other 10% was the tracking shot.

It's kind of interesting to think about if Season 1 of True Detective might have sucked without McConnehey. I really don't think another actor could have made that character so compelling.

Really liked the episode despite the issues raised itt. Had some ideas/questions though

-what kind of accent is Vaughn supposed to be sporting? Thought he sounded ridiculous. Is that what 80's-90's southern cali/LA gangsters sound like?

-did CF's fat unshaven partner remind anyone else of Philip Seymour Hoffman? Thought it was him for a moment.

-these people (the police - don't know about VV's character yet) are depressed. It's nihilism without the philosophy.

-think I'll be alone here, but I didn't believe CF when he called his kid a "fat pussy". Lulz at me for challenging his acting, but the line felt forced and flat to me. Wonder if CF doesn't believe that someone in his position (the character) could be so insensitive to a child despite how out of control he his.

Every time someone links me to a "THE X THINGS ABOUT STUFF" articles I click it expecting it will be good, but it's always pure crap. Come on man. This is basicly the work of a random dude that didn't like the episode and then watched it 5 times with a notepad next to him to write down all the """"ridiculous""" stuff. 90% of that list is either obsessive nitting or pre-judging future moments of the show.
