Anybody have thoughts about not going with a single director like the first season? There have been many top notch shows that, stylistically, crush on a big league level; but, True Detective managed to angle just a bit higher and I can't help but think that's in large part due to a single vision for the whole run. It seems like a crazy decision to jump away from that when it so clearly impacted the show.
To do it right, you really need the same director, same cinematographer, and same editor for all of the episodes. Even season 1 of TD couldn't do that, having to switch editors for I think 3 episodes. I think that tonally hurt the show, but most others wouldn't notice it much. Each editor has a very particular pace they cut at, and editors aren't good at matching others' pace, because each editor has their own inherent timing. It's similar to mixing, in that regard, in that you can give two people the same material and end up at completely different places.
The Walking Dead managed to have a very similar style throughout solely by using the same Cinematographer. That's how it would mostly be executed today. A director that I think could handle the grind of the 8 episodes is Carl Franklin, but he's pretty busy, and I'm not sure he'd want to do it. He's also visually good enough to make the show not drop down any levels (he directed almost all of the best House of Cards episodes, and was nominated for EMMY for directing for the first episode of season 2).
Directing that many episodes of a TV show is extremely grueling, so I think I would almost be surprised if they could get the same director to do all the episodes. If they can manage to get the same Cinematographer for all episodes, that should keep the look intact. If they can have one editor throughout the run, the feel will always be consistent. Look and editing (in my opnion) are more important than having the same director for consistency. The first director is the one who sets the tone and style (why they're always given Executive Producer credit), and everyone else's job is to make the show feel as similar as possible to that or those opening episode(s).
I think regardless of who they get, it's best to just expect a good show. Expecting anything close to GOAT level season 1 will just lead to disappointment.
