how much screen time W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority from Deadwood) gets as Colin Farrell's partner will probably make or break the season.

never heard of him...looks like he is a morbidly obese 40 something who used to write for AV Club. now he is writing clickbait "articles" for a clickbait site. his new one today is "All 16 Pixar short films, ranked" (not a joke)

i now like True Detective episode 1 a little more now that i know he hated it!

-did CF's fat unshaven partner remind anyone else of Philip Seymour Hoffman? Thought it was him for a moment.

-these people (the police - don't know about VV's character yet) are depressed. It's nihilism without the philosophy.

-think I'll be alone here, but I didn't believe CF when he called his kid a "fat pussy". Lulz at me for challenging his acting, but the line felt forced and flat to me. Wonder if CF doesn't believe that someone in his position (the character) could be so insensitive to a child despite how out of control he his.
PSH is dead, but he could pass for an older washed up brother version.

the "fat pussy" line bothered me too. i don't think it was so much CF's delivery, but the line seemed wrong. i guess maybe it was supposed to? the character loves and cares for his kid, clearly, but he's so ****ed up he'll call his kid a fat pussy. and it's ldo not his kid too. there's that whole dynamic.

Well I wont judge without seeing some of his good work but I'll say the article was completely ridiculous and that I have a very hard time linking the word "respected" with the author of such an article.

I think it served exactly that purpose, the initial scenes with the kid show CF as a caring and good father but then we discover the crazy side of CF's character. Him threating his kid that way and beating up the bully shows us his crazy side overlaps into his personal life as well.

Tbh I actually laughed out loud when he said it because it was so out of character for his character up to that point.

My guess is CF's character will go full bat**** crazy mode over the course of the season.

Didn't seem like me to be nitting. A lot of the stuff WAS ridiculous, as were some of the lines of dialogue he called out.

FWIW he has a more standard review of the first 3 eps and says it gets better about halfway through episode 2... so I don't think he's "pre-judging" anything.

Neither were perfect, but I preferred the episode to the snarky article.

I believe this character's appearance was an intentional homage to Orson Welles' corrupt policeman in Touch of Evil.

Todd VanDerWerff WAS a well-respected TV writer, but if he's doing trash articles like that now, that's kind of sad.

kioshk, was it his drunken stupor, or his light suit that made you think that? Of all the connections in the world, I highly doubt Justin Lin would have been thinking that one. But if so, cool or something.

His partner is Dan Dority from Deadwood, give him credit where credit's due. When you can't afford Bruce McGill, he's out there ready to step in and look like a dude who really needs to get his **** together.

i thought the episode was fine but some of the dialogue was pretty questionable. i guess pizzolato took a huge bite out of a cosmic branzino when he came up with some of that ****.

They're both great character actors, but I doubt they overlap much. McGill ain't ever playing Dan Dority. Still, nice call.

I finally watched the premiere, and there is nothing wrong with that TDW piece. He didn't like the episode, and transferred his longform style into listology to get his point across. Deal.

no way. the title song on the new season is straight up garbage. the song for season 1 was awesome and a perfect fit. i think actually this seasons title song is sort of indicative of the whole season in general. its like the writers are too aware of themselves and are trying to stay in the vein of S1 without being accused of just writing S1 part 2. it just misses the mark in an odd, cheesy sort of way. its like that feeling after you leave disney world. you kind of feel dirty, like someone just went through your pockets and you just let them. i should write for them this season this post is actually wicked good.

It seems like you're confusing the sound of apocalyptic doom and lyrical brilliance with "cheesy".

I quite like the song, but it doesn't fit with the visuals. On other hand, not sure what song would fit with visuals and rep LA.

I would say you are in the small minority with that opinion lol. Even more ironic in a "gambling" forum.

My favorite song+visuals to capture L.A. is during Jada Pinkett's opening cab ride in Collateral, set to Groove Armada's Hands of Time (w/ Richie Havens on vocals). It's full of gorgeous overhead shots of the freeways and downtown at night, and just sets such a great mood. Too bad the rest of the movie went mostly down the toilet.

And obviously that song is way too smooth and mellow for True Detective. I think I like that Leonard Cohen song they use, but I'm not sure yet.
