So now that S4 is over, I have made a definite decision on what I think about Rick's awareness of his Meta-reality. He breaks the fourth wall all the time, but are they just jokes or is Rick as a character at his core aware he is a cartoon character?

I'm convinced he is.

He knows his continued existence depends upon his adventures remaining entertaining. He tried to kill himself but the writers refused to allow it to happen. Season 4 is about Rick preparing the Smith Family to carry on the show without him at all. He created a clone of Beth so she could grow into a character that can take the family on space adventures. Now everyone in the family, even ****ing Jerry, has enough experience to be interesting parts of sci-fi adventures, all due to Rick's influence.

Rick's end game is to be written out of the show so he can retire to his shy pooping world. So my wild-ass guess prediction is that in S5 Rick will disappear for at least a while. However, when the writers do an episode focusing on whatever he's doing all by himself he will realize he can't leave the show and will be back by the finale.

Rick and morty without rick Sound like a great idea

The Vat of Acid Episode clinched it for me. Those guys were never a threat to Rick at all. There was no possible scenario where jumping into a vat of acid would be necessary. Rick came up with the idea because he thought it would be a funny idea for an episode.

But his idea sucked, and even Morty couldn't take it for more than five minutes. Rather than admit his episode idea sucked, he took one of Morty's ideas and made the rest of the episode around it. Then he made sure it would suck for Morty. Because Rick sucks.

Consider the two episodes Rick mentions. The dragon episode, which wasn't Rick's idea, and which most fans didn't love, and Pickle Rick, which was awesome because it was Rick's idea to turn himself into a pickle. In Rick's mind, Rick's ideas are awesome and anyone else's episode ideas suck.
