It definitely has a negative connotation, but my guess is over the years the guido community has co-opted the term and "made it their own", similar to the blacks and the gays for their respective derogatory slurs.

This show is fascinating. It's like an inside look at everything I hate the most, and would never get to see much of up front because of said hate.

is this group just a unique group of guidos and guidettes or is the entire jersey shore area infested with italian dbags? like if a normal person were to go to jersey for some reason, would they stick out like a sore thumb if they weren't italian and swimming in hair gel?

Yes and no. It is a unique group in so much as the entire Jersey Shore is definitely not like that. However Jersey just happens to have a disproportionate amount of people like that compared to the rest of the country. Would be akin to claiming that "everyone in New York City is Jewish" imo.

The Jersey Shore is just the preferred destination for NY and NNJ guidos. They don't live here in masses as much as they visit every year in masses.

this is essentailly the "Real World," but more slutty, more trashy, less gay, less diverse, more "guido," more train-wrecky, more edgy, and probably less scripted.

This show is epic....I don't even have cable and find myself watching it on MTV.com on my laptop. Saw the thread and thought nothing could be better than Tommy "Cheesebawls" from the True Life Jersey Shore episode. Apparently I was wrong!

Only one person on the show is actually from NJ.

The shore varies from town to town. You have your preppy towns, your sufer towns, your black towns, your white trash towns, your alternative/gay towns, your guido down the shore towns, etc.

Most of the guys actually seem pretty chill, Vinny most of all I think.

Sammi seems the closest to "normal" but the girls all have serious problems. Angelina might even be the worst; she goes up to clockblock those guys, why, for her own entertainment? Because she's angry and insecure about being tied down in her own relationship and doesn't have the self-esteem to man up and bang any guys she wants to w/o feeling like a slut, so she takes it out on them? She should probably be executed by firing squad.

Three groups representing Italian-Americans — Unico National, the Order of the Sons of Italy in America and the National Italian-American Foundation — issued statements last week condemning the MTV series, which the Unico group said used “ethnic slurs, violence and poor behavior to marginalize and stereotype Italian-Americans.”

“Their behavior is reprehensible and demeaning in all respects,” André DiMino, the president of Unico National, said in an interview. “I don’t see any redeeming value in the show. They are an embarrassment to themselves and to their families.”

The show’s cast members have defended themselves in interviews, saying that the term some people find offensive, to them simply refers to a lifestyle of muscled, well-coiffed and deeply tanned men and women.
Quote:
Nevertheless, the show’s content apparently came as an unpleasant surprise to at least one advertiser. After the first episode, Domino’s, the national pizza delivery chain, asked MTV not to place its ads on the series any longer, a spokesman for Domino’s confirmed over the weekend.

If you have nothing but contempt for women then I highly recommend Cody Lane's work. The piglet has to be the world's greatest hate****.

If I ran MTV, this show would have been the first thing I ordered. It is fantastic in every way.
