I have no interest in seeing one of the best shows being made right now getting cancelled because of a slightly bad half season. Taken overall this season is better than season 3 and season 4 was great.
Given the huge variables on how they can end this season its impossible to predict next year, however i can see a lot interesting storylines coming out of this season.
Also i so massively disagree with "They don't really seem to have a decent direction for dexter anymore" - the ultimate direction for Dexter is being found out by Deb and Lumen is a massively more interesting direction than Rita ever was.
Dexter isnt yet at the point that it needs a definitive end point, but it is getting close. Whether this is going to be next season, two seasons or even longer will probably be defined by the end of this season and the direction next season will take in response. What is certain is this season wont have an ending like season two with everything wrapped up nicely, but regardless all i know is i enjoy watching the show every week.
It doesnt need to keep the same quality if its still easily top 10 right now. Saying it peaked in season two as evidence it needs to be culled is pretty ridiculous, season two was one of the best seasons of any show ever. Shows rarely maintain high quality for so long. But in no way is the quality progressively getting worse, it is clearly swinging back and forth.
