There really isn't any excuse to not have Sanchez fail at starting before sticking him in the bullpen. They wanted to keep his innings down last year so that made sense, but if he's in the majors he really should e starting, regardless f what the bullpen looks like

Meh, the same was said about Aroldis and Papelbon, but there's something to be said for going with a lesser role that you know works. Sanchez wasn't lighting it up as a SP in the minors, so if he were to come out and say "I like being a closer and that's what I want to do" (like those two did when their teams were considering conversion), I wouldn't be dismayed at respecting those wishes.

Where did this Sanchez shouldn't be a starter sentiment come from? I understand people who may not want him to be the 5th guy this year but if that's the case then let him be a starter in the minors. The guy has front-end of the rotation potential which is way more valuable than one year of good bullpen pitching.

I'm not saying my sentiment is that he shouldn't be a starter; it's that he offers value either way, with a higher ceiling on being a starter, but a lower floor on being a reliever, so if he's hellbent on being a reliever, I'd bow to the job satisfaction that keeps him happy/productive.

To answer your question, the sentiment came from his being a lights-out major league reliever after struggling as a minor league starter.

ken rosenthal said there would need to be "compensation" if we got the DUKE, like when the cubs got theo. so i looked it up and the cubs sent the red sox CHRIS CARPENTER. i guess we'll have to send the o's our own cy young winning pitcher. goodbye dickey!

Spoiler:
i know it's not that carpenter. i'm fine with sending a ****ty minor league reliever if DUKE is really the guy they want.

Chapman is a different type of beast though. With his power and pitch selection I think he is a lot more effective as a closer.

Reports are saying that Melky is going to the White Sox, 3 years and $45 million. Yikes.

ZIPS has Melky earning 5.1 WAR total over the next three years. I'm fine with the draft pick and 42 mil if we spend it somewhere.

I'll take the over on those projections because if he stays that bad defensively they'll just move him to 1b or Dh.....

They benching LaRoche or Abreu?

The problem isn't just the defense. His power is marginal, he doesn't add anything on the basepaths, doesn't walk and has had abnormally high BABIPs. Maybe they're sustainable (as his speed declines though, I'd guess that becomes harder. Still, line drive hitters do often have higher BABIPs), but that's a whole lot that can drag his WAR down.

I'd probably take over on 5.1 because ZIPS would have trouble differentiating between "injuries" and "cancer", but not by too much.

Brandon Morrow is going to San Diego.

Apparently for only $2.5m plus incentives. I wish the Jays would've brought him back at that price to pitch out of the bullpen. Maybe he wanted a chance to start and rebuild his value.

Yeah, def wants to start, also wants to pitch in Petco to rebuild value, which I can't blame him for.

Given our budgetary restraints, I understand why we can't do incentive deals. Certainly sucks to hamstring ourselves in yet another way though.

Andrew Albers signed with the Blue Jays.

I grew up with him and I see him at the gym every day. Kinda cool to see a kid I used to play baseball with/against sign with the Blue Jays.
