I don't mind the 5-year thing, but I wish I didn't know about it. Good five year free agent deals are pretty rare.

AA saying we won't go over 5 for Lester and he doesn't expect us to be in there as a result.

i mean the other side of this whole thing is our books are the envy of every team.

google cots baseball contracts and snoop around the league.

ours looks a hell of lot of better than most, if not every other team's.

our team suffers from a talent perspective, but we won't be paying guys like BJ Ryan 10 mill a year to sit at home and drink beer in their later years either.

Aren't the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla?

Things like that

Juan Francisco claimed off waivers by the Red Sox today.

I will totally lose it next year if a Jays pitcher throws him a fastball.

I think Nick Cafardo is a massive hack, but he seems somewhat dialed in on Red Sox news. He's reporting that Sandoval is waiting on a decision and expecting a bid from us in the next 24 hours.

Yeah Cafardo is the worst, and there's no way Sandoval is worth anything anywhere near $90-100MM. If the Red Sox want to go that high, they can have him... unless the Jays just go HAM and sign everybody. I'd want Headley over Panda, and Scherzer* over Lester for that matter.

* The only upside I see to Lester over Scherzer is Lester seems way more likely to stay in the division, so signing Lester, assuming he's a 4 WAR pitcher, adds 4 WAR to us, but also removes 4 WAR from Boston or NY.

Am I the only one who doesn't want Melky back at anything but a premium price/term?

i think people are overreacting to how his offense is irreplacable or something

That's the thing...offense is the only thing he brings, and even that's a little superficial. I'd take him on a Butler contract, but I think he's getting more and I don't think I want us to be the ones who give it to him.

I'd be a lot more comfortable re-signing Melky if his defense wasn't so bad.

personally, i'd be a lot more comfortable letting him go if someone could name me a potential replacement.

Nick Markakis, he'd be cheaper, is way better on D, and would probably see his power numbers go up if he played for us.

I can't imagine his WAR would be that much lower than Melky's

Nori Aoki comes to mind. Could also see us trading Happster or Dioner for OF help.

Susan Slusser reporting the A's are shopping John Jaso amongst others and that they're interested in Sean Nolin. Makes sense if we trade Navarro, I suppose? I'd take him as Martin's backup/occasional LF/occasional DH.

A closer look at Bruce makes him a little less appealing...still think there's some likely bounceback there though.

...oh, and he has a no-trade clause naming us. So there's that.

Usually looking at something like guaranteeing that option or turning it in to a player option in order to waive the NTC

i've read the fangraphs piece "jay bruce bottoms out" and the stoeten post on bruce, and i gotta say i think it's a terrible idea to trade for him. sure he's gonna bounce back from his horrible -1 WAR season, but even if he's 2.5 WAR better, he won't even be worth his contract. so even as a straight salary dump, that would be a bad move, but it's not my money so w/e. my problem with it is that I saw some tweet today (forgot who it was from) that said the price to pay would be one of stroman/sanchez/norris. no thanks. i think it would be the first AA deal i really hate right from the start.

I'd bet good money that all of Sanchez, Norris, Hutch and Stro with be with us in spring training.

Yeah I think they have a really hard time moving any of those guys unless it's for a Hamels deal or something fairly major like that.
