Finally got around to watching True Grit. Great film, some fantastic writing, the dialogue was at times outstanding.

LaBoeuf: You give out very little sugar with your pronouncements. While I sat there watchin' I gave some thought to stealin' a kiss... though you are very young, and sick... and unattractive to boot. But now I have a mind to give you five or six good licks with my belt.
Mattie Ross: One would be just as unpleasant as the other.

every 4th of july i see on the news thousands of low income and middle class americans gathered to watch some fireworks armed with mini flags and maybe a little face paint. you see these people brought to tears with patriotism as bottle rockets whistle and bang. then they get interviewed and they go on and on about how great the USA is and how proud theyre to be american. as an outsider looking in i see the whole U.S. health care situation, military situation, and governments role in the financial meltdown and i just think really? i'm not saying i have all the facts or anything like that but it just looks kind of crazy. yeah americans have it great vs 3rd world countries but i think id probably be of the mindset that we can and need to do better rather than weeping with a sparkler in my hand if i was an american
Most of the people I know signed up for the military for economic reasons. Job market sucks/parents stopped paying for college/can't find a better job than working at the movie theater after graduating with a college degree and the army always hires.

It may not be necessarily prestigious, but it is a respected occupation and pays a solid wage.

Every solider joins do defend our nation (disregard a few sickos that just want to kill people), but the more time you spend over there, and the more deployments you rack up, you can't help but start asking the biggest questions most of us had: What are we doing here? What are we accomplishing? Why are we still here? I would say that most guys who say they want to be hooah, bad ass killers, are probably spending most of their time behind the wire, not really doing much.

Once you start moving up the ladder, to the spec ops units, and the upper level joint tasks force, it's hard to deny that we are simply opening new markets and securing resources. You just receive too many classified mission briefs to deny it. ( I won't elaborate more on this, as I don't want to break OPSEC.)

IMO, most guys over there, regardless of their politics, or their level of knowledge about big picture missions, would just like to come home.

love the honesty man, ty vm for the response.

One question I'd like to put out there, which you might not be in a position to answer, is:

If things are as you say in that the poor bastards eventually realize what they're doing and just wanna come home...why havent some of the ppl who have come home started some sort of informative campaign, something to get info out to youth or their parents about what enrolling will really entail.

Saw something pretty disturbing in the markets today. Don't click spoiler if you're eating...

Spoiler:

Been having menu roulette at a lot of restaurants recently as menus are rarely in English. Pretty worried that I may have already eaten dog unwittingly .

I don't get angry easy but those pics made me livid Choice. thats some seriously disgusting ****

Are you a militant vegetarian? If not, then why angry? Disgusted I can understand, but I see no reason why you would be angry. No objective reason why eating dog is wrong, compared to other meats.

Some have, but the media does a good job of making them look crazy, stifling/not covering their efforts. Also, when guys get home, a lot of them fall into the trap of liking the gratitude they constantly get for serving our country, free football tickets, giftcards to stores, discounts for veterans, proud mothers, etc. Not saying we don't deserve some of these things, but it is my opinion that once guys are home, and they are receiving these things, they are less likely to speak up.

Most are afraid that if they speak up, they will get Ann Culture'd (for those of you who don't know, when things in Iraq were going very poorly, she told a veteran, who lost a limb in Iraq, who was brave enough to speak up at a rally about Iraq, that he was the reason we weren't winning there.) I think most guys, other than face things like this, would rather just keep quiet, and stew in it. There has to be a reason that 33% of the male homeless population are veterans, and that 18 veterans commit suicide everyday. Again there are many reasons that it is difficult for Veterans readjust to society, but feeling isolated and feeling like they can't tell the truth is a big one, atleast among the guys I served with. Also, all special ops troops, who hold a top secret security clearance, are bound by 99 year no discloser agreements.

I think it is obvious to any semi-sentient creature on this planet that most of the US' military activity on foreign soil is not done for the benefit of humanity as a whole, or even most Americans. They serve the interests of a powerful elite. I should add that I am not anti-American at all, nor a radical.
