Yeah, totally game/partner dependent. It might partially be for pace of play, but the main purpose is to avoid drastic changes to handicap from blow up holes that aren't the norm. In my normal group we pick up net doubles, but if someone has a money game going on the side they putt out.

And now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think anything in the rules says "pick up once you hit the max." You record what you got and the computer deals with whether you hit the max and adjusts accordingly.

Now, knowing nothing about any of these people other than their posted handicaps, how would you go about picking your partner if you have the first pick*?
*this is very much just a hypothetical as I don't expect to come away with the top seed on a course I've never seen*
Day 1- I go out and shoot a 74(net 72) and get the #1 seed. While I'm thinking about who I'm gonna pick I find out they changed it this year. Teams are set based on seed, meaning I get the #8 seed....a "17.5" who shot 105 in the seeding round.

Day 2 - 2 man scramble, we get 2 strokes. I have to use my partners tee shot at least 5 times on non par 3s. He doesn't hit the ball over 185-200. Every time we used his ball I was 50-75 yards in front of him but we did what we had to do. We were 2 down thru 2 and it got as bad as 4. We did get it back to 2 thru 15, but when we halved 16 and they had the tiebreaker locked up it was over. We played our own balls on 17 & 18 and I birdied both, lol. I may have shot lower on my own ball today than we did on our scramble because of how far back we had to play from on his drives.

Day 3 tomorrow is alternate shot and I think they changed it to having both people hit the tee shot and alternate in from there. We're giving 4 strokes, lol. Alcohol will be out early and often.

have fun ec.
tough rub of the green on the change in seeding this year. my best guess is the rest of that group lurks this forum and saw that you were primed to quant your way into a win if they didn't modify things.

Anyone got new England area hookup that will teach club fitting and sport science so I can fake it till I make it? I'm a very fast learner. I just need a point in the right direction. Really good with my hands and I'm also really good at busting my ass. Will barter labor for training.

Gotta make a move. And sports is the field I want to break into. I dont really care if I end up regripping clubs or grinding wedges. I want this.

Played a reciprocal yesterday. Our 4th was supposed to pay the guest fee. He tells us they only charged him for the cart (they didn't ask him any questions so it's not like he lied but still......).

Any way my home course finds out about this???

Maybe. Maybe not.

I'm guessing if someone snaps to the fact that you should have been charged a guest fee that they will bill your club--assuming you all belong to the same home club. If they do, just tell whoever is in charge of billing at your club to whom the charge should go, and they should take care of it.

At least that was my experience when something similar happened to me

On Sunday I played at a course where I had a card for a free green fee I won at a scramble tournament. I gave the kid behind the counter the card and said "I have this card for the free green fee, I'm riding". The dude didn't charge me anything but I didn't question it.

Uncle Slim's Current Top 10

1) Royal County Down (not sure this will ever be topped)
2) Merion
3) Pacific Dunes
4) Royal Portrush
5) Baltimore Country Club (East)-My home course
6) Bandon Dunes
7) Lahinch
8) Honors Course
9) Cascades Course (Homestead)
10) Ocean Course

Flame away

(Others I thought were overrated: Spyglass, Pebble, Baltusrol (thou I heard the redo is insanely good), Winged Foot , Caves Valley, Congressional (heard their redo is off the charts too))

I made an account with NY state so I can, theoretically, book a tee time at Bethpage. Tee times for, say next Friday, become available at 7 pm tonight. So I've been playing around to see how quickly they go, and they go instantly. The other day I clicked again as soon as I could and one was actually available for the next day at 9 am. So I clicked on it just to see if it would still be there when I try to check out. Well, there is no next step. My "click just to see" was me actually booking the tee time.

So I'm emailing, calling to cancel because obviously I'm not driving to Long Island to go play on a whim. No luck. I'm now stuck paying the green fee and a no-show penalty if I ever want to play there. Ugh.

And then the next morning I get an email saying the course is closed for the day. Phew.
