Thanks. I'm not in Malta yet. I'd be grateful if you could drop me a line at [email protected], if you find the time. I'm very interested about your experiences, since i intend to follow the same path. Cheers!

Considering relocation from the states in the next few months for poker. Malta is one of the places on my list. One of the things I need to take into account is my diet. I have Celiac (gluten allergy) anyone living in Malta know if this would be a deal breaker for me.

Thanks.

Lots of gluten free options in stores M8. Restaurants you are a little bit limited but I think there are a few who serve gluten free.

Any Americans get a visa to live in Malta for a long time (like a year or more)?

How did you get it? What route did you take?

We found our place! A nice villa in Mosta

Thanks for your help!

I want unlimited internet on my phone, don't really care for text and calls (some prepaid option or w/e would be fine). Where should I go? I want minimum hassle.

Also wug best option for backup internet for grinding?

I've been reading up on moving to Malta because I have to leave the Netherlands due to the tax-situation, so I'm looking at my options.
Am I getting this right?:
'As a EU citizen I have to stay in Malta for 3 months, then I can apply for Maltese citizenship.' So I have to wait for 3 months before I can apply for citizenship?

Also how would I proof that I am economically self-sufficient being a poker player?

Maltese citizenship you can aquire for 250k euro.

Maltese residency is wat u looking for and they change teh how to's each year. Most people from eu dont register in malta they just there. If u unregister in netherlands, move to malta and spend over 180days/year there u are taxable there and out of reach for dutch government
Most players operate like this.

Right sorry, residency is what I meant. So would that mean that I have to spend 180 days in Malta before I pay taxes there meaning I'll have to pay taxes in the netherlands for that period of time, or do I fall under the maltese tax-regime immediately, and am I then expected to be there 180 days/year?

I've talked to a Maltese resident today and he explained to me that you only pay tax over the money that you earn on Malta or bring to malta, the tax you pay there is 8~10%.
Online profits do not count as being earned 'on Malta' and are therefore tax-free. Getting the profits to a Maltese bank account however will be taxed 8~10%.

Pretty much everything wrong besides that money u bring to maltese bank account SHOULD be taxed (if u pay taxes on it is entirely different story). Most pros dont have a maltese account bc of this and cash out offshore.
Tax brackets are 15% 25% 35%. 8-10% is flat out wrong. If you play poker seriously you will almoast always fall in teh 35% bracket

Ah right, must've understood this incorrectly then.
However, I was told that when you live on malta you have to pay taxes there in order to proof that you're resided there and paying taxes on Malta, if you cashout everything off shore, surely you wouldn't be paying any taxes? Also, I assume you can still use the offshore bank account on Malta without getting into any trouble?

In order to proof that you resided/reside there all u have to do is spend over 180days/year there and maybe keep utility/resto/airtickets bills etc. - you also should not have any residence registered in your homecountry

Obv you can use offshore accounts with no problems but moast use them for savings while using ewallets for everything else.

Wat happens if u dont pay taxes, return to homecountry one day, try to get ur money there to buy a house nobody will really be able to tell u. I dont plan on returning to my homecountry so i dont really care.

But from all ive seen there are always ways and loopholes to get things done so id rather worry when you really plan to come back home one day and sort it out then.

Also nobody really cares where 200k are coming from but 2 mega+ people might start to ask questions

Again, im no lawyer but in poker for over 6 years now and while i was v paranoid rgd taxes in teh beginning im v relaxed now. Teh only thing you should really avoid is winning any major live events...

Thanks a lot, seems pretty clear to me, guess I'll just open an offshore bank account and go from there.

What about the live poker? I tried to google but couldn't find anything about it.

Any gym suggestions (within 3km from St Julians)? I went to the Hilton gym and it was like the real housewives of Malta, 70% threadmills and very limited free weights. I'm looking for a gym that would have lots of free weights and lots of machines.

Also wug best value outdoor pool type of place, anything with a monthly pass?

The place I just rented has the 35/mo Melita internet. Is that enough for serious poker playing or should I upgrade it?
