I'm not saying she shouldn't do cardio, but she should just walk out her door and speed walk rather than watching tv and leisurely pedaling on her ass. She should def continue with the lifting but have more of a purpose and not ego lift. The bros here want her squating 3 plates, benching 2 plates and DL 4 plates by summer. Some happy medium between "toning" and "yoked" I think would suffice.
Lifting at a commercial gym is a waste of time in this situation because a) it burns very few calories, b) she won't gain appreciable muscle, being a 35-year old female, so almost nothing is accomplished, c) it takes a lot of time to travel to the gym, get changed, wait for equipment etc., d) it costs money for a membership that could be invested in quality home equipment that lasts and has resale value. Going to the gym for MLYLT is just not an efficient way to go about achieving her goals, especially when she could achieve similar anaerobic benefits much more easily at home with some basic exercises and equipment.
Spinning allows MLYLT to potentially burn thousands of extra calories each and every week. I would have guessed she could burn somewhere between 400-500 calories per hour at a moderate intensity on a spin bike, but
this link suggests it's more like 780 calories per hour at her body weight. Those are serious calories. You make it sound like she would just do 30 minutes once or something. Once 30 minutes is comfortable it's easy to get to 40, 50 and beyond. And you can do it every day. It's not really unreasonable to build up to an hour of biking 5 days per week. That's potentially 3900 calories. It doesn't take many hours per week of cycling for you to really get somewhere. AND she can still go for that walk around the neighbourhood.
The spin bike is about compliance and a direct path to her desired result. If speedwalking works for someone, great. But the reality is that's not the median person. The median person is going to watch some TV and surf some internet while they're at home. Maybe a lot of TV and internet. Hell, we all do it. Spinning allows you to still do both but actually exercise at the same time and make a tremendous dent in your caloric balance. Sit on her ass? Yes, I guess she'd literally sit on her ass when she spins. That doesn't change the fact it's the most painless way to burn thousands of extra calories per week.
As an aside, most people don't realize how cost-effective quality home equipment is. For the price of a one-year membership at a big box gym, you can get a set of Powerblocks plus a spin bike that will each last you 10-20 years and will have resale value of 70-90% of purchase price at any point in time. And they will get the average person much closer to his or her desired results with way less grief.
