Just chiming in here...

I work in a professional Audio Engineering post production facility. The only type of headphones you will find in this entire studio are Sony MDR-7506.

Take it for what it's worth.

can i get someones opinion on Sol Republic headphones? are they worth the 99-199$, or are they like Beats where theyre not worth the money? basically asking are they good value

alobar,

why dont you just put $1 earplugs in and then stick a cheap pair of cans on top and turn the poker sound up.

So im now kinda torn between just getting those, or possibly a pair of

Etymotic ER4PT

which from what ive read does maybe even a better job at eliminating noise than actual noise canceling headphones. But I have no way to test them out. And its a bit frustrating because it seems like so many reviews for headphones are just obvious spam crap, so its hard to know wtf to believe

thoughts??
Bose are a JOKE!

those ER4pt are better at noise cancellation because they fill the ear canal, not because they have some technological feature. the frequency response are terrible on those according to the spec's... I would look elsewhere.

If you like what you are seeing there, try the Klipsch I posted... similar in design( I am sure they copied klipsch) and the Klipsch are some of the most comfortable and accurate out there.

x10i-349$ retail(street price is lower)
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 5Hz 19kHz (the measure of the dynamic range)
SENSITIVITY: 110 dB (the measure of efficiency)

x7i-199$
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 10Hz - 19kHz +/- 3dB

To update an earlier review the klipsch rugged earbuds just stopped working after about 8 months, which is about as long as life as I have gotten out of any. i am very rough on them, as I wear them everyday and also work out in them about 5 days a week.

I just bought a pair of ultimate ears from Costco and they actually sound better than any earbuds i have had previously, including the klipsch and Shure. Costco has them for around $35, which is a really good price if they hold up. Here is the product on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-985-0...owViewpoints=1

If anyone has had good luck, with good sounding earbuds that hold up during workouts, let me know.

I find that a lot of people don't really know how to properly use ear buds/phone when connecting and disconnecting from a device... as precision instruments, you need to be gentle, specially when removing. Don't pull by the wire, pull by the end plug. Also I find that many folks suffer failure because of improper storage... tossing them into a bag so they become tangled and mangled is a sure recipe for pulling out of a wire.

I've had the original Image Ones, for more than a couple years or so, they still work perfectly.

I tried that, it just sounded weird and was distracting.

Im thinking about trying the opposite tho. A pair of industrial ear muffs with a pair of ear buds underneath.

Any love for V-Moda in here?

Picked these up on Cyber Monday for less than $80. Originally $150, I believe.

So happy with them. The sound quality is amazing.

Would definitely recommend.

my beloved fmj's finally gave way. can someone recommend a couple models that would be a good fit for me:

definitely not an audiophile, something in the $50 price range will be good enough for me
in-line controls + mic for iphone is a must
preferable if those controls are not bulky
somewhat durable -- i'm kind of rough on headphones, wrapping them up and throwing them in a bag etc when i'm on the go. i don't want something too delicate

After 7-8 years, my Sennheiser 280's have bit the dust. The gf coiled the cord really tight on them and now there's a popping noise constantly. After some quick research on head-fi between those and the Sony MDR-7506, which are about the same price, it seems like they're comparable, but the Sony's have a slight edge for those that are going to play around with the EQ and are maybe a bit more neutral, where the Senn's are OK right out of the box.

Got another pair of Sennheiser 280s since I pretty much just listen to music/podcasts and I'm not an audiophile. Amazon has some promotion going on them right now, so they only ran me $81.75 shipped.

I'm looking to buy headphones for use while playing poker/on the laptop. I've only ever used iPod earbuds, and don't any experience with headphones so am just looking for something to get started. My budget is $200 and below.

After reading through this thread I've narrowed down my choices to Shure SRH440s or Shure SRH 840s (any other recommendations?).

I've read the 840s are a lot more comfortable then the 440s(I have a pretty big head and need something I can comfortably wear for long periods) however are more suited to professionals. Would these be overkill for my needs? I'd be willing to pay the extra $90 if they are significantly better/more comfortable.

I'd appreciate any advice.

I've seen these a lot in studios too. However, I was under the impression this is largely due to their comfort for guys who have to wear them all day and their near indestructibility, as opposed to superior sound. Although they obviously do a good job in that area too.

I'm hoping for some help for a complete noob here. Thank you guys in advance for any insight. I just want a semi portable comfortable pair of over the ear headphones to listen to music while I grind. I tried all of the beats at bestbuy and really loved the studios. I listen to a lot of bass heavy music and really loved the sound (I also listen to a lot of classic rock and stuff that I suspect would sound bad on the beats). I tried some other random pairs at bestbuy and nothing seemed up to snuff to the beats.

Now I understand pretty much everyone says the Beats are overrated and overpriced. I searched this thread as well as the internet and couldn't find the answer to this question. If beats are overpriced, what is a comparable model I should pick up instead that sounds similar?

From the info ITT I've narrowed it down to the Shure 840's, but I know next to nothing about I should be looking for so I thought I would ask for some help before making a decision.

Thank you again.

Disclaimer, can't speak to the quality of these headphones, but just some other options:

ATH M50s
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica...ywords=ath+m50

Ridiculously popular headphone. I once owned the sister pair, the Pro700 MK2s (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica...=ath+pro700mk2), and found that the clamping force was too strong and after an hour or so of listening would hurt my head. Even with regular headband stretching it didn't go away.

M-Audio Q40s
http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Studio...ds=m-audio+q40

Still a relatively new headphone to the market but they seem to be well received so far. Foldable with a detachable cable gives them good portability.

And the link I send everyone to:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/433318/shoo...added-12-02-12

100+ full sized "portable" headphones reviewed. For whatever reason this guy has zero Shure reviews, but if you look around Head-fi you will find tons about the 840s.
03-12-2013 , 03:11 AM
Thank you for the great post. Both of those options seem up my alley. Although I'm just going to peruse the head-fi site until I have a definitive answer. Lots of info there. Thanks again!

FYI... beats are not over rated. everyone pretty much knows that are crap. when looking for a pair of headphones, pay close attention to the frequency range and the sensitivity.

the FR will give you the range which the phones can accurately reproduce, the sensitivity will tell you how efficient in reproducing sounds the phones are. if a maker will not show you those figures, avoid.

as far as range goes, you want a range that is somewhere from 15 hz to maybe 20k hz and efficiency of at least 95 db
03-12-2013 , 05:11 PM
Well I can't agree there unfortunately. I know people say they are crap because I started researching online. But before that as a complete noob to this market I thought they were the nuts (lol marketing) and everyone I know who is not into this market of higher quality headphones thinks the same. With that said if you buy things based strictly off of marketing and flashy colors without doing your own research then you deserve to have crappy headphones. So moot point I guess.

Thank you for the info with regard to the sensitivity and range. That should help me quite a bit in determining a quality product.

I am currently deciding between the M50s and the Vmoda M100s. M50s would be a snap buy IMO if they had a detachable chord and for durability purposes as well as being able to put a mic on them (do lots of skype sweats and such, would prefer not to have to switch headphones). I'm definitely falling into a small marketing trap with the M100s because I absolutely love the way they look, but the sound quality seems to be up to snuff as well according to the guys on Head-fi and I don't mind spending more for something I like and is also of high quality.

Thank you again for your input. As always any further input from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

I recently bought the Bose QC15's, and got to use them right away on a trip to Boston for 5 days.

Both flights were nonstop, and these things were AWESOME at deadening the "white noise" you normally have to hear while flying, but still able to hear my friend next to me at normal conversation level.

does open/closed matter? maybe sennheiser hd598s. i have the 555s (the older model) and a big head, and they're extremely comfortable.
03-31-2013 , 01:14 PM
I know it's over budget, but I just picked up a pair of V-Moda m-100s and they are amazing. Best sound I e ever heard, and I've heard a lot.

The Crossfade LPs are good and so are the M-80s and both are within your budget.
04-03-2013 , 01:46 PM
I have a pair of Shure SE420 in ears. I use them direct from an iPod Nano and from the headphone port of a MacBook Pro.

Would I benefit from a headphone amp? I use the headphones only at my desk so I don't need anything portable. Recommendations?
