Fedor uses this frequently. I believe he did it to Sylvia.

It's a great move if your opponent is a slugger and not a counter-striker. Or if they are gassed. If Soku was a counter-striker, his left hand would be eating Cane up while Cane is really exposed because of the slap-move. But Soku is not a counter-striker, just a guy who is huge and hits hard, so Cane took him apart with that move. If you tried to do that to Chuck, his left hand would be in your face before you could throw the straight left.

I did and yelled out about it, as most people at my house missed it. Although, in my drunken state, yelling out "did you see him bitchslap soduku?!?!?" (yes I said soduko) probably didn't convince anyone I wasn't imagining things..

MMAmania.com has a piece up announcing the retirement of Jason "Mayhem" Miller. It seems like he just doesn't have that desire to fight again. Here's a quick quote from the original "Mayhem Monkey" himself regarding the retirement:

"I got plenty of money. I don’t even care. I just do it for fun. I love fighting, but I’m just doing it for fun. I don’t feel like doing it right now, so I’m not going to do it. There’s no need. There’s no need for me to fight, so I’m just happy to have lived such a fun career inside of MMA, so if it ends now, it was fun."

He also points out that he won't be completely gonne from the MMA scene:

"Oh, I will be in the MMA world. I can’t really escape this land of tacky skull tee shirts and [censored] with bad tattoos. I can’t get out of here that easily, but with that being said … I don’t know, I don’t need to fight."

And then he started fighting not to lose and lost his killer instinct. And up until Vera fought Sylvia, all but one of his wins were finishes.

I think Vera's got a lot of potential, but his contract is so bloated compared to his performance that the UFC is almost forced to let him go. I guess that's what you get for being greedy and turning down a title shot.

Affliction is trying to take the CBS spot.

Crazy ****.

Unless Affiliction does pick it up, this seems to mean the end of any significant women's MMA as Dana has said UFC will never have women fight. But, he may have that rethink that if he can get a Carano-Cyborg fight together. That fight should draw fairly well and needs to happen somewhere.

I think Strikeforce would/will pick up where EXC left off. They're also looking for a live deal on NBC (they already have a successful show with them).

Strikeforce rules.

how/why does strikeforce rule? (I know very little...not disputing it, just trying to learn).

Thanks,

Weird that Elite XC would go out of business. I would still watch any kimbo fight they put on and I am sure everyone else would too.

I'm super pissed because the November card was gonna be a good one... Thompson vs. Edwards, Villasenor vs. Lawler, and of course the one I was most looking forward to, Diaz vs. Alvarez.

I suppose Affliction and Strikeforce will pick up the pieces, with a few going to Japan, but I don't think the UFC will land many of their former fighters.

If they could... I'd want the UFC to sign the following:

Shields - He wants some tough tests... Let's see if he can hang with the big boys
Lawler - puts on a good fight and has much improved since his UFC days, a worthy opponent for The Spider to destroy
Diaz - a fan favorite who could be a great gatekeeper at 170
Alvarez - would definitely be a contender at 155 and could do well at 170
Feijao - He may have the ability to crack the top-ten of the stacked LHW division
Herman - Could add a little more spice to the up and coming HW division, mix him in with the likes of Velasquez and Carwin and see what he can do.

Yah EliteXC had enough intriguing fights for 1, maybe 2 more cards before they completely shot their wad.

not really, once they shot their kimbo load as a result of him losing comically they basically had nothing left.

that said, i for one want to see lawler back in the ufc

I liked every woman fight from EXC. Sucks for Gina Carano, who put on a show every time she fought.

Now she can skip to the inevitable endgame and pose for Playboy.

They're one of the few non-UFC promotions that makes money. I mean, Dana White has gone on record praising Strikeforce head Scott Coker on numerous occasions.

They focus on putting together good shows in the California/West Coast. They put on Shamrock/Cung Le, Melendez/Thomson, etc. They brought over Misaki and Ishida for their last card.

They're like the Oakland A's of MMA.

I mentioned Thompson Edwards above when talking about EliteXC, but that's a Strikeforce fight... I meant to say Lombard/Smith which I was looking forward to. I'd like to see Lombard get into the UFC as well. Powerful Judoka who can finish fights!

Strikeforce is a great promotion though... they don't over-extend, have partnered up and traded fighters in smart ways, and always put on a good show with plenty of hype in Northern Cali.

I would like to see Carwin fight bigger names but think the fans could grow tired of fights that don't go past the first round, i can only think of one suitable opponent

Obviously, I agree with Silva.

Alves/Koscheck is going to depend on Koscheck's gameplan. I think he can win a pretty boring decision if he wants to, but if he wants to trade with Alves it could be over quick. Standing, Josh will have to work the jab and keep the Pitbull away from him, and look for a spot to shoot while avoiding Alves' dangerous knees. I think Koscheck will win.

Maynard is going to demolish Clementi. Hopefully this is Maynard's fight which moves him into the spotlight in the LW division. He'll be deserving of the top guys in the LW division after this.

Griffin had a lot of trouble with Edgar's wrestling abilities, so this may not be an easy fight for him. Sherk still has ability left, but he's going to want to get this one to the ground quick because I don't think he can stand and trade with Griffin. Sherk is not easily finished, and Griffin hasn't been able to finish fights lately, so I think Sherk might take this in a decision even though I'm rooting for Griffin.

definitely agree with this. i just can't stand to see sherk win with his lay and pray but for the most part when he fought bj penn he stood and traded with him which is why i think advantage might go to griffin

Well... that was mostly because nobody wants to be one the ground with BJ, so Sherk thought he could out strike him. I think he knows he can handle Griffin on the ground so that is where it will go, unless Griffin does some early damage standing or is able to avoid the takedown.
