I've been smoking the Nat Sherman Hobarts for the last 10 years (3-5 a day)but have been out of town in Omaha the last 2 months for work. I found a great little cigar shop called Nickelby's where they turned me on to the the Rocky Patel Edge's. FLAT OUT AWESOME SMOKE! I had three today in fact!

I can't remember if I posted this in this thread, but I tried the edge, having been a massive fan of the vintage 92's, and did not appreciate it at ALL. Honestly, i see no reason to get anything other than the 92, it's the perfect cigar for me, I guess.

Had my first Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 last weekend, and I think it might be the perfect smoke for me too.

That Patel fellow makes a fine ceegar.

I need to try the other Rocky Patels, but I love the Edges and recommend them to any semi-regular cigar smoker.

I'm hoping someone can give me a recommendation here. Several years ago, a Canadian friend gave me a couple Cuban cigars and I have not found anything else like them.
This cigar didn't feel like I was smoking, it was like breathing sweet air. I haven't found anything else that was so mild. Unfortunately I've long since forgotten the name of the cigar, but I was hoping someone might be able to point me towards some suggestions for mild and sweet cigars available here in the states.

Nat Sherman Hobarts-i've been smoking these for the last ten years. mild smoke with a great draw and a sweet wrapper. not always the most consistant but over all a great smoke for the price.

Smoking Rocky Patel's Decade, right now. Not a bad smoke at all, same quality you'd expect from any RP cigar in terms of draw, feel, burn, etc. Still, no where close to the vintage 92 :P I just can't seem to beat it, but a friend gave this to me, and it's pretty nice.

I picked up a box of Hemingway Short Stories that will hopefully last me through the colder months.

Side query, anyone in the DC metro area interested in joining a cigar and port or liquor club come spring?

Mine is about half gone from the past month.

I'm also a big fan of the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Torpedos. A nice smoke.

I tried RP ITC and Edge Torpedos in the last two days and found them both rather pedestrian. The ITC was tasty and smooth but it never really impressed me well constructed though. The Edge was a bit firm and didnt draw as well. Both were far better for the first third than the following two. Going to try the Decade torp next, and i have high hopes.

ok i only saw 1 mention of this but noone responded - has anyone purchased the ftp humidor? if so, how is it? worth the fpps?

It has been a while since I've checked this thread. I see many ppl are suggesting buying online. I recommend cigarbid.com for that. However, IMO, there is no better smell than the walk-in humidor at my local B&M.

This is very true. I'll go to my local B&M if I want to do some cigar talk or if I'm really craving a certain cigar, but the prices here in the city of Chicago aren't too friendly. I use cigarbid.com for all other times.

I am going to Cuba in a bit, any recommendations for Cigars to buy, and/or trips to a cigar factory etc?

Also how difficult will it be to get the cigars back into the USA, I will be returning via the bahamas or jamaica most likely.

I have brought the Cubans many times into US. At first I would take off the bands and identifying marks. Lately I just shove them into my laptop bag without any problems through customs. I don't smoke cigars often, so the Cubans come across way to strong for me. I tried an Ashton cigar and the Ashton tasted like toilet paper. Any suggestions on a weak cigar to build tolerance?

Dont buy cigars of the streets. Even if its your cuban friend that you know for a couple of days He will rip you off.
Try some of the custom rolls by hamlet, la china or reynaldo. Try them before buying a lot of them but their cigars have a great reputation but the blend changes due too the different tobacco they get.)
I dont know what kind of flavors you like but here are a couple of cubans that i really like (havent tried a lot of the upper tier lines because they are out of my price range): montecristo no2+4, partagas shorts, series d no 4 + series p no2, Bolivar petit coronas, half coronas + belicosos finos, Puch punch + petit punch, RASS + RASCC, Trinidad Reys, Por Larranaga montecarlos + petit coronas.

A couple questions from a non-smoker: How many of you guys also smoke cigarettes? When getting into cigars did you go cigarettes -> cigars or just go straight to cigars? What about those smaller cigarette-sized cigar-looking things, are those just a dif type of cigar or completely different?
03-14-2009 , 05:57 PM
I started smoking cigars, and rarely ever smoke cigarettes. I enjoy cigarettes, but only smoked with friends who smoked, so I never got addicted or anything, haven't ever bought a pack for myself or anything. I'm a mooch. This probably happened because there was a greater social stigma for cigarettes.
03-14-2009 , 06:34 PM
I dont smoke cigarettes. When I first started buying cigars Id buy robustos. Dont know if thats the best way to get into cigars but it worked well for me.

Cigars are like drinking a fine wine; you relax and enjoy them occasionally.

Cigarettes are simply an addiction. Two entirely different animals, IMHO.

They sell it at Costco for ~$35, which seems like a pretty good deal.

The cigars are a pretty good selection, but are probably a little on the dry side.

Montecristo Original
Montecristo White
Montecristo '93 Club Cabinet
Montecristo Afrique
R&J Reserve Real
R&J Vintage
R&J Reserve Maduro
TTT Trinidad
H. Upmann 1844
Henry Clay

So far I've smoked the Monte Original & the '93 Club Cabinet. I was smoking the '93 Club Cabinet while kinda drunk in the hot tub while watching Lost, and it wasn't burning very evenly and I had to relight it once. Love the Original, though after smoking it for a good 30-40 minutes I still felt like I hadn't made a dent.

Actually, all of the sticks in this 'sampler' are like 6x50 or so. will they all take about the same amount of time to smoke?
