At ten bucks or more per stick, I'd hope they were damn fine

Then I got three Mix bag offers where I got 23 Cigars for $35. The one sampler I have gotten before and it had some 5 Vega Gold, and some other names I recognized.

Order totals

$109.99, 68 cigars
20 Rocky Patells
25 Vieja Hacienda
23 Single Surprise Cigars.

Could I have done better?

give a holler about the two non "Vintage" patels, curious about them.

i do enjoy a cigar on some nights, but i'm by no means a connoisseur.

how long (approx) should it take u to smoke one of these? honestly they last a longgggg time... like 45mins for a cohiba esplendido type cigar?

I know you're supposed to smoke them slow but still... i read the whole thread and nobody touched on how to get them to remain lit.

sometimes when i smoke and im in the middle of it, it will stop and i'll have to relight (which apparently is bad).

cheers

Well I have tried three of the cigars in my order so far. I should note I am in no way qualified to review cigars, but here are my thoughts on what I have had so far.

First one I had was one of the cheapies .

Would I choose this cigar if I could only smoke one kind for the rest of my life? No. Would I choose this one if I could take one free one from my local shop? No. Would I give this one away if I was bringing some cigars to a bachelor party and knew most the people there wouldn't know much about cigars? Yep. Will I grab two of these the next time I go golfing? Yep. So in short it was fine for the price.

It smoked a little hot, but burned evenly. I took only about 20 minutes to smoke which was also fine. Thats why I would choose it for golf. Should last about a par 3 and a par 4.

Next one I had was a Sol Cubano Series B. This was one of the smokes I got in one of the mix packs I ordered.

This is why I like the surprise cheap mix packs. I really liked this cigar. I burned cool and even and lasted about 35 minutes (thats a guess based on how much I read while having it). I didn't pick up the coffee tones that are mentioned in what I linked to but it was medium bodied. Since it's about 2 bucks a stick I would do this cigar again.

The one I had tonight was a Corojo Vibe by Rocky Patel.

The cigar smelled great before lighting it. When I cut it I was very impressed that there was basically no flakes of tobacco came out (there was some of that with both the cigars above). It lit easily and was excellent from the start. It took it about half an inch to get a really nice even burn going. I was amazed at how easy it smoked. There was absolutly no sucking needed on this, just a regular breath. I also have never seen so much smoke come from a cigar, both off the lit end and per puff.

Then I got a little careless while reading and lost the ash head about 2/5th of the way through. This was not a good thing. It started burning uneven and I did not get nearly as easy a smoke. It eventually evened itself out, but was nearly burned through before doing this.

It was still good and the best of the three, however I'm looking forward to trying this again to see if I manage to keep the ash on it longer if it continues to be the great smoke it was at the begninning.

On a seperate note I'm kinda pissed at cigars international. When I went to there site to link to some of these cigars I saw a mall promo on there page offereing 5 free 5star cigars with a purchase of over 100 bucks. Well I bought more then that and didn't get it, so I click on it and it says that it's not added to the order unless you add it to your cart before finalizing your order. So I missed out. Kinda lame if you ask me.

Oh well I still feel like a got good value on my purchase and ordering on Sunday and getting them on Tuesday is pretty fast shipping (shipping was free).

if u smoked that cohiba that fast, you did it wrong imo.

its all about size, and width plays a huge factor. Id say for an "average" cigar these days, which are bigger than the average stick of the past, you are looking at a 1hr commitment.

if you have to put it out, cut off the burning section, then blow through the cigar to mobilize the stale smoke. Its not a sin, but dont make it a habit.

Did you call them? I had a problem with something I got from them that after further review was clearly my fault, and they said "no problem, we'll send you another" and they did.

They are good people imo. Couldn't hurt to ask.

Can you expand on this? I do this all the damn time. What is the problem?

Edit: simple internet search shows that the taste is a little more bitter after relighting. This is true, and is minimized by cutting back the burned area. Far more preferable than wasting half a cigar.

Thanks.

I have not had a 92. I bought the sampler that I did based on really liking his "Connecticut" line.

As I try more I will keep doing write ups.

Just came in from a smoke.

El Mejor Emerald was a very unique cigar for me.

It was the first cigar I have had that came wrapped in cedar paper, which I thought was too classy for me (which proved true). Second, it had about a quarter inch of unwrapped tobbacco on the end.

So I had heared it was a good move to light the cigar by igniting the cedar paper and using that..... well yadda yadda yadda there is now a small burn hole in the pants I was wearing. Anyways, it did light well and got off to a very good start.

I thought overall it was a very mild smoke that had a unique finish. I want to say it was a sweet or tangy finish, but I'm not sure that is the right word.

The ash head fell off a few times (it was a pretty big cigar) and right after that it would get kinda harsh, but then smooth back out.

I liked it, but it was not as good as the Rocky Patel Corojo Vibe I reviewed a few posts up. If I was stopping at a smoke shop to pick up one smoke this wouldn't be it, but it was a nice addition to a sampler pack. I also enjoyed playing with fire.

Hey what do you guys think? I was going to get a couple small boxes of cigars for some friends' weddings coming up. Was looking at the Padron 1964 Anniversary Imperial Maduros or else the Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 (or 1990).

Also the post above got me wondering... I have a box of the Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatras and they are wrapped in cedar veneers. If you don't have a proper lighter can you light that veneer and use it? Is that what it's for? I'm a cigar noob.

havent read the whole thread but I am suprised no one has mentioned much about Oliva cigars, I have smoked a lot of the ones mentioned in this thread and the Oliva master blend robustos are quite a bit better than any of them imo. But then again I am somewhat of a cigar noob.

do ittttttt. 92, not 90. 90 is okay, but 92 is much better. I'm such a 92 fiend, its crazy.
08-06-2009 , 06:19 PM
i'm going to get a '92 tonight with a friend and smoke it at the beach actually.
08-06-2009 , 06:46 PM
I have some '90s and '92s at home. Had a '92 last weekend based on recommendations in this thread and it was really good... never had the Padron 1964 but it looks like it is top rated at puff.com and was like 3rd in the 2006 cigar afficionado rankings... well I'll just go with what I know since the RP 92s seem to be universally appealing.
08-07-2009 , 12:17 AM
I appreciate the vintage 90s and 92s about equally. They are different, but both great in their own way. You can't go wrong with either one.

Actually, if I didn't just light a Cusano 18 maduro just before reading this thread, I'd light one now. It will have to wait for this weekend.

Anyone had any of the Punch Rare Corojos yet this year? I just got my hands on one (could not find them ANYWHERE around me), and I'm looking forward to enjoying it tonight.
08-11-2009 , 12:25 PM
TR on Rare Corojo:

This year's crop was pretty good. A more mild and smoother taste than I am used to from punch. It doesn't have quite the same spice as it has had in past years, but that's fine with me. I also had it after dinner, which might explain it.

I have literally smoked 2 Cigars in my life and both were sub $6 in price. But I enjoyed them very much and was wondering what you guys thought of this.

http://www.cigar.com/cigars/viewciga...rod=sp-cighum2

Obviously I don't know anything about good brands or what brands I even like. So I looked up and some samplers and this seemed like a good deal. I'm also not looking to spend a lot of money here. If I were to casually do this about once a week or less often and spend $5 or preferably less per cigar if quality is still decent, that would be ideal.

I don't know much about proper upkeep with the humidor but I've read some of this thread and will certainly learn more before trying to store these. The deal comes with a humidor. Looking for advice on that. I'm obviously not looking for anything expensive or excessive, it only holds 20 but that seems more than adequate for me. Are the cigars offered in the sampler good, bad? Is this is a worthwhile purchase for a newb?

Any advice would be great, thanks!
09-05-2009 , 10:47 PM
well... I'd be a little nervous about the humidor, but I suspect if you decide you like cigars and want to stick with them, you could get a replacement humidifier from cigarsinternational.com or something that might be sufficient.

I guess for 2 bucks a stick and included humidor, it's probably a good starter kit. There are a wide range of tastes included. Make notes about which cigars you like/dislike and why and we'll try to give you pointers on next ones to try.
09-07-2009 , 05:53 PM
@ken_aa: i had a couple of vibe corojo torpedos and had with one an ash that was longer than 2/3s of the cigar. i liked them but they are overpriced in europe...

Any reason you would use the word "nervous" about the humidor? Other than being cheap, would it do the job for short term keeping?
09-08-2009 , 03:47 PM
tupperware is a fine humidor for the short term, dont get too swayed by freebies.

all you need is a drymistat and something that is fairly airtight, a few chunks of cedar from the first few boxes you buy and you are on your way. worry about the box later.

i think if i were going to try to get someone into cigars id go by shape. get a torp sampler, a robusto etc until youve had some of each size, take notes and then let the cigars take you where they will.

I'd just be afraid that it wouldn't do a good enough job keeping the cigars at the proper humidity. The humidifiers that come with even hundred buck humidors are pretty crappy and hard to trust. Add to that a cheap humidor that probably doesn't really create a closed environment (has a lot of leakage), and I guess it makes me nervous.

I obviously don't know the particulars of this humidor and you might be fine for the short term. My personal opinion is that if you decide you really like cigars and that this is going to be an ongoing passion for you, I'd set aside money for a better humidor pretty quickly.
