I'm really starting to get in to the cigar "world" so to speak. In a very short time, I've accumulated 3 humidors, 8 cutters, five boxes of smokes, a small wine-cooler that I'm turning in to a humidor and have been enjoying some incredible cigars.

My top 3 so far have been the Padrón Serie 1926 No. 6, Romeo Y Julieta Exhibicion #4, and the Cohiba Robusto.

I have a couple of cheaper boxes on their way of what I'm hoping end up to be more "everyday" type stuff, so we'll see how that goes.

Seasoned it, rubbed it down, shot glass of distilled water for 3 days, everything was fine. Added about 70 cigars, humidity dropped big time, wasn't concerned, figured it would take a couple days.

Panicked a little bit, was using both included humidifiers with activator solution, an extra humidifier puck included in a cheap 20-count humidor, a pillow, and a jar of crystals with distilled water poured in:

http://www.cheaphumidors.com/Merchan...Category_Code=

Is this overkill or is it necessary in the extremely dry winter?

I put in this digital one I bought awhile back:

http://www.amazon.com/CALIBER-DIGITA...2287041&sr=8-2

The digital and the included analog one were way off so I decided to try the salt test. I used a plastic bottle cap for the salt. If you're supposed to use a beer bottle cap, then I screwed up. I put the digital in a pickle jar (which my results suggest was not what I was supposed to do) and the analog in a plastic bag because it didn't fit in the jar.

I ran two tests, one with distilled water and one with tap. Both tests had the same results: Digital- 79% humidity and Analog- 69% humidity

I thought I was set and was just going to have to adjust to get an accurate reading so I put them back in the humidor for about 24 hours. When I next checked, they read: digital- 58% and analog- 64%

Thinking the pickle jar was a mistake, I ran a 3rd test with both in separate plastic bags and got the results: Digital- 66% and Analog- 68%. If the 3rd test was accurate, then it seems I'm right where I want to be in the 67-71 range.

I removed and replaced the battery from the digital (hopefully resetting it) and I'm currently running a fourth test. I'm going to record the results and let them sit in the humidor again and see where I'm at and I will update the results in a couple days.

Sorry I ranted so long and whoever had the will to read this is a saint. If anyone can provide answers or suggestions, I would really appreciate it.
Normally the digital ones are spot on but you have to have enough cigars in your humidor as they are much more permeable to moisture than the cedar is. It sounds like you have the opposite problem though with maybe too many cigars. I use this humidity source which has jelly crystals that shrink as they lose moisture and have a fill line to remind you when to fill. It works like a charm and I highly suggest it. Over the winter I forgot to check for a month or so and the moisture got down to about 58% and it definitely took a while to get back to 70%. I think just keep the solution in your humidor and give it some more time and it should creep up to 70. Also make sure to rotate your cigars since you have so many.

Had one of the top rated My Fathers the other day. $12 smoke... very, very good. I'm not sure it's worth the $$ though... I'd rather spend a few bucks more and get a Padron 40th

Also, am I the only person who prefers torpedos over almost any other cut of cigar? They are the easiest and most pleasurable to smoke... cut and draw perfect (if it's a good brand) nearly every time.

So are you supposed to inhale cigars? I've been hearing this argument for years. I do smoke one once in a while and I do inhale.

Also does anyone know a good cigar shop in Vegas?

The two I enjoyed most from Vegas were Pheasant, which is basically across the street from Palace Station, has good prices and a comfortable lounge area if you plan on smoking there. Here's their website

Also a stop at Casa Fuente in the Caesars Forum Shops is a must for any cigar smoker.

I think that typically torpedoes are rolled by the most experienced people in the operation and thus are more consistent. Also the shape is really nice IMO.

I had a RP JAVA last night and really liked it.

Which got my mind moving toward flavored cigars.

Is there a brand out there that does a good vanilla cigar?
05-10-2010 , 09:32 AM
Went to my local B&M and purchased a variety of Rockey Patel's. They did not have the edge in maduro so I skipped it. Also bought a vintage 1990 (no 1992s in stock) bought a Decade Torpedo and a Patel Bros. cigar.

I smoked the Decade last night and found it enjoyable but not too special IMO. Smoked almost identical to a CAO Anniversare Torpedo which I have smoked a few since they were also a high rated cigar. Overall quality of the decade was good and it smoked nice but again, didn't live up to the hype of a 95 rating.

The 1990 was a big fat cigar that looked dark and delicious. I am going to give that one a shot in the next few weeks.

Hey guys, can you tell me if this is a good deal and if these are good cigars for the price. I'm a noob when it comes to knowing brands/tastes/etc, but I smoke probably 10 cigars a year, at least. I am looking to buy a sampler/variety pack for my summer smoking. I really only have access to a portable humidor, so a whole box won't work and this fits with my budget. Thanks in advance!

Flavored cigars are to cigars as wine coolers are to wine. Just say no sir.

Yes, Pepin makes some very nice cigars, and that's a decent deal and sampler. Enjoy.

I love regular cigars as much as the next guy. But, I play cards in an enclosed room with alot of girls and they complain about the smell.

So I compromised and bought some RP Java's, they were fantastic.

If women are involved, that's the exception to both flavored cigars, and wine coolers.

So gimme a vanilla cigar recommendation.

I would like to get into the cigar hobby and was thinking of starting out with samplers or 5 packs from jrcigars. I don't smoke much, so a 5 pack will probably last me a month or two. That being the case, is it necessary for me to have a humidor for just 5 cigars? I'd like to keep things as cheap as possible starting out. Thanks.
05-12-2010 , 04:41 AM
If you're just starting out, you can use just regular everyday tupperware for short term storage. Here's an article I found just by googling, but I'm sure there are more if you look around.

If its just experimental, I really think you all should be going with vintage 1992 not 1990, for the rocky patel.
05-16-2010 , 03:47 PM
I had an Acid brand "Green Tea" infusion. Very Good.

Then I went back to chain smoking the RP 92's.
