If you want to be an early adopter it looks like quite a few DDR4 mobos and chips have come out in the last year, doesn't seem too much more expensive than DDR3. A quick look over some benchmarks though and it doesn't really seem worth it, with some games and apps getting a slight boost from DDR4 vs. DDR3 of similar specs, and some suffering a slight dip. Other than that, there's not much to suggest given your recent upgrades, just pick the CPU that fits your budget and a mobo of the same socket. You can probably just reuse your RAM, though you might see some decent gains upgrading if you're on something like DDR3 1333.

Does anyone know if NVIDIA is releasing any new product soon that might bring down the price on 970s?

Not so much VG related, but anyway: Is the Windows 10 upgrade going to be considered worth it or not so much?

I'm completely fine with the Windows 7 that I have, and the Windows 8 that I've used I absolutely hate.

I'm getting mixed reviews on 10 so I'm not sure if it's worth upgrade for free.

Thanks for the input. Didn't know Computex was this week in Taipei. I'd think nVidia and Intel would talk about what they're planning for the next year. Guess I'll wait and see what's mentioned.

I noticed MicroCenter has the i-4790 on sale for $280. Seems like a pretty good deal.

DirectX12 (which is part of Windows 10) is supposed to be doing some great things for gamers in it's ability to leverage hardware to it's full extent and remove bottlenecks between the CPU and GPU. Of course, it'll take a while before we actually start seeing it supported and see those benefits in games.

I am just going to jump on it while it's free, because, free.

Microsoft seems to nail it every other windows release so if that pattern continues then 10 should be a positive experience. To be honest I think it is a bit intentional. Not that they are trying to release poor versions of windows, but that they are doing cycles of experimenting and then refining what worked and what didn't.

If you get a cpu and mobo at microcenter, they give you a huge discount off that combo.

It's free, so you might as well upgrade. Windows 7 is officially off of the mainstream support cycle, meaning they won't be adding new features to it (only patching bugs).

You have until July 2016 to upgrade to 10 for free, so if you're concerned about early bugs, you can always wait until 2016 to upgrade.

Reportedly people who are running the Windows 10 preview + leaked drivers are getting 30-40% performance boosts over Windows 7/8 in Project Cars. This is based on forum posts but these claims are popping up all over.

Been running a preview on a second computer. Windows 10 hasn't given me any issues to speak of. It's basically a more polished version of Windows 7, which is a great thing.

What drivers do you install on Windows 10?

7? 8? Or do you wait for 10?

I got an e-mail today saying that it will be available starting July 29th. I am looking forward to it. I might now jump in right off the bat but if people have good experiences in the first month or 2 I'll probably take the plunge.

Will it cause any problems with any files I have on my computer? I have 6 years worth of things I don't want to have deleted. I have an external HD and will back up as much as I can, but just curious that it won't reformat my computer or something.

I would actually prefer a format and fresh install. I would feel better about that than just having faith that nothing will go wrong when it comes time to change out an entire operating system.

I'd be surprised if it reformatted. Most likely is an upgrade, since people getting are 7/8 users. Though, one could fresh install whatever OS they have if they wanted such a thing

I'm definitely formatting when I get Windows 10. I don't want to imagine the issues that will come with old stuff on the computer

everyone would do well to consider a format (or better, a new hard disk) to be mandatory with a new version of Windows, even if it claims to be able to upgrade old versions without losing data.

With everything being in the cloud these days, reformatting every year is a must regardless.

I'm pretty sure someone did a full upgrade via disk from like windows 3.1 to windows 7 , only using the upgrade feature.

Why? I haven't reformatted once in the last 9 years, 3 years between each new build. Just be smart about how you use your computer, VMs for browsing, careful about what you install, keep things clean with something like CCleaner. Win 7 still runs as fast as it did 3 years ago. That was only true in the early XP days and before, though from my work experience with Macs probably still holds true there.

holy crap, this isn't the golden days of windows 98, you don't need to reformat several times a year

Who cares?
A format is nice.

And it doesn't take long. With everything saved on the cloud, it takes less than 3 hours
I generally format once a year, just because I feel better. Also clears up games that I don't play or programs that I don't use.

I notice a little system slow, so yeah, formatting makes me feel better.
