Update is fine, upgrade of an old compu is cpu sepuku. Ya AMD got me hard when I disabled my Catalyst Control Center. Took me a couple hours googling event viewer errors and reinstalling drivers to get the application crashing to stop.
The benchmarks do look really nice. But the performance lead (if it exists) isn't big enough for AMD to regain market share, especially given AMD's tendencies to fail at production scaling.
Still, these are exciting times. AMD upping the core count and performance to "competitive" levels will force Intel to respond with lower prices and higher core counts, eventually leading to much larger user base of quad-core CPUs to tempt developers into properly multi-threading.
Meanwhile, 6700HQ laptops with GTX 1060/1070 laptops are already getting discounted by 100 to 200 due to the imminent release of 7700HQ versions.
Pretty much exactly 1000. You can go down to ~800 by opting for AMD CPU and GPU but you'll lose 10~20% performance overall. At this point in time Intel+nVidia is king.
Just insert the Radeon 480 or Geforce 1060 as the graphics card and you're set. This guy is actually a great deal. I'd sell one card and pocket the cash, or sell both and buy a Geforce 1070.

I don't know if that's true with current gen Pascal chips running at ~70c under load. My own experience with an Asus GL502VS is it doesn't get THAT hot either.
IMO buy like the best processor in the biggest tower from new egg you can get for $400-600ish, then immediately upgrade the ram and video card. This will cost you $600 and will last a year less time than the $1k rig. My current computer was $500ish bought in 2012 and runs most things ok, but is just getting due for an upgrade. YMMV
1060 and 1070 are at such a good performance/price point now. It's silly to not shell out another 200 to grab the RX480 or GTX1060 (next step down is pretty big). It's kind of a shame to not get 1070 too for another 200 more. These cards will last 3-5 years.
You're paying extra for a year (1060?) or two (1070) of useful life and extra FPS for the duration of the useful life.

Wow, what AMD showed at CES is amazing. The 8 core Ryzen is only a little slower, if at all, than i7-6900k and Ryzen, supposedly, wasn't demoed with boost yet.
10% cheaper on the CPU (my guess)... and the MB will be much cheaper anyway. If AMD doesn't blow it with supply issues they are going to give Intel some pretty massive headaches, especially with Cannonlake delayed to second half of 2017.

Maybe I should wait to jump to 1440p?
I've also tossed around the idea of adding two more 27 in 1080p monitors and rocking a triple 27 in setup.
Curious question. If I went with 3 1080p and got a 144hz for the center monitor for games I'll play on one panel, would that panel just run at 60hz with the other two when I ran a game that supports 3 screens? Or would different refresh rates cause it to look weird side by side?
