This is probably mostly true (that people overvalue NHLers without much reason), but for chemistry reasons NHLers should be a bit more valuable.

- Diminishing returns. This can be seen in pretty much every market imaginable (players, contracts, training cards, everything). Getting that extra point or two of overall rating becomes massively more expensive as you get into the higher stratosphere of players, even as it becomes more and more meaningless (measured as a % difference between less skilled players). In players, I've seen the following typical values:
80/88 (Valabik): go for 700-1.2k
81/89 (Wheeler): maybe 1.5k
83/91 (Pavelski): 2.5k
82/93 (Frolik): 3.5k
87/95 (that's Kopitar, right?): 10k?
I mean, yeah. In some cases the increased prices don't quite justify how much better the players are, but it usually does. You have to keep in mind too that rarity matters. Certain players are issued far less than others and the demand for them goes up exponentially as a result. Of course those aren't the players you should target to build your teams, they are the ones that you want to sell for profit.

Obviously if you're swimming in pucks, you can afford to blow all you want on the big shots to squeeze as much out of your players as you can, but on a remotely limited budget it seems much more cost effective to go for a larger number of slightly less skilled players.
I'd agree with this, definitely.

- Name players. Today I saw Niklas Lidstrom, a 87/89, sell for 4k. Nevermind that you could buy a 82-rated defenseman and five +5 training cards for way less and a lower salary...
Some of it goes back to rarity, but definitely a lot of people will overpay for name players.

- Randomness. Like I said above, I saw some idiot pay 4,200 for Dustin mother****ing Byfuglien's ugly ass today. I think yesterday I saw someone shell out 1k for Pascal Dupuis. ****ing 80/83 Pascal Dupuis!!
It actually took me a while to sell Buff at that price, but I figured eventually somebody would go nuts for him based on his playoff heroics. On another note, some of the underrated players on teams with passionate fanbases that have high potential can be sold for a lot, too. I sold Gilbert Brule (82/90) for almost 6k earlier - probably to some diehard Oilers fan that just had to have him. In general players on Canadian teams can be sold for a lot more based on that same logic. Players like Cammalleri, Phaneuf, Kessel, etc. are just worth way more than they would be on other teams.
