There are also Black soul gems, a bit more rare. They're the equivalent of Grand, except they capture non-creature souls (like imperials etc)

My only regret before selling this was that I didn't wabbajack any NPC's.

I mean, I don't know if it would have an effect, but man that would be funny.

I'm unclear on the benefits of having captured black souls. More charges for weapons but still the same stats as a grand?

Yeh, but that isn't really a benefit

I had tons of fun turning on the god mode (tgm in console) and trying to ride my character off the highest mountain to Riverwood. When the horse dies it often launches the character. The character needs both the velocity to get down, dodge some trees and not to hit the ground for too long to start the animation for getting up. I almost made it, like 50 meters is missing.

I also bring companions up and use Unrelenting Force on them and watch them stumble down. I think I'm playing wrong.

Black souls sell for more

Spoiler:
I rain into a crazy old woman somewhere who was a jabbawack groupie or something who begged me to use it on her. Turned her into a rabbit and got a bounty on my head for it even though she turned back later.

Well, the benefit is that there are a lot of humans later on. Vamps/Necros etc, they have to go in black gems.

Creature grand souls are uh.. Mammoths are grand, I think giants are greater(not sure on that one), I really don't know a lot of the grand ones.

How do you actually capture souls? Do you have to use a weapon that captures them or is there another way?

of course thats a benefit. probably at least half of all mobs are humanoid, all of which contain equivalent to grand souls. the other half are white, which maybe 10% of that 50% contain grand souls.

black and grand souls are exactly equivalent, no difference in charges or anything.

also worth noting that The Black Star is bugged and accepts white souls too (at least for me), making it pretty much the greatest thing ever.

either with a soul trap enchanted weapon or by casting conjuration's soul trap spell on them before they die.

You see, NOW you're mentioning benefits rather than pointing out a difference.

If I start doing Dark Brotherhood quests and Thief's Guild quests will I make enemies that I don't want to make?

Like I said, I'm trying to play a benevolent character, become Thane in every city possible, etc.
Can someone answer bold please? I don't want to do all these quests only to get all the Jarls to hate me and guards to kill me on sight, etc.

Best way is to get a weapon that captures souls. I didn't bother enchanting until I had one. The weapon made it very easy. Whenever you kill low level Draugrs in a dungeon you can fill all your gems very easily.

I'm in the thief guild, no one cares. I have not been attacked because of it.

Not only will the guards not dislike you due to being in the thieves guild,

Spoiler:
but you can bribe them to clear your bounty without losing all your stolen goods. I do this often.

Ok, my smithing finally hit 100 and my enchanting is not too far behind at 75 or so.

i haven't put ANY perks into these two skills yet. it seems dumb to put any in smithing since i war light armor and all the smithing gear is heavy armor, right?

what enchanting perks are worth it?

I had hired thugs attack me in that little town with the mage Jarl and the burned down house, and I just stood in the water and fired arrows at them while they stood on the end of the dock and watched me kill each of them. CLASSIC!

You can smith light Armor (that's all I use) I've actually been selling my dragon bones since I'll never be able to make heavy armor them anyway.

Smithing is worth it even for light armor. There are two smithing paths. Left is light armor. Right is heavy.

Despite that, right has the best light armor (dragonscale). Use the perks of the right path.

For enchanting, get all the 20% upgrades, and the dual enhancement thing.

The left side of the smithing tree is light armor; elven, glass, etc...
