Just grind the level 36 Strike playlist. You'll get a ton of engram drops. Decode them one at a time, always have equipped the highest light level weapon and armor available, as each time you decode something it takes your light level into account and you have the chance of getting something better.

I shot up fairly quick with this method. Got tired of farming the same boss for exotics, so was just doing the 36 strikes (for engrams drops for better light gear) and then popping a coin for each boss for a chance of exotic. Was killing two birds with one stone this way.

Also if anyone was farming exotics all weekend, you should have a ton of Ether Seeds. Go to Variks on the Reef and trade them for Heavy Ammo synths. Then trade those Heavy Ammo for faction rep. The faction packages you get from ranking up a level usually have 290+ weapons from what I've seen each time

Yea I've been doing the one engram at a time trick, just haven't been getting a lot of 290+ Engrams is all.

Got all 3 Toons up to 287 tonight and completed my 3rd nightfall. Pretty happy with the first weeks progress. Probably should have just focused on one character, but oh well. I'll probably spend this week trying to get one of them Raid ready as I really want to try the raid out.

Also, does anyone know, once all your quests are done is the only way to get Legendary Marks the Daily Crucible, Daily story and 3x Heroic Strikes?

That makes for 240 a week, no? Makes them a little scarce once you are doing Paradox 3x and all that jazz. Maybe they sell them at level 3 and 5 in IB?

We beat it - only CPHoya and I remaining from 2p2, about 20 minutes before the reset. The rest of the crew had work etc and couldn't degen it up playing for 10 hours straight on a Monday lol. Both of us probably couldn't either, but did...

Pretty decent showing from us - we beat the vast majority of it blind. Unfortunately we had to cheat in 3 spots.
spoilers / details on our "blindness" follows:

Spoiler:
1: Looked up guide for Golgaroth after failing there day 1, thinking we must be missing something - but no - we were indeed doing it right, but didn't realize quite the difference proper execution makes. In fact, after more hours refinement our "mango" method is imo better than that recommended by the most popular guide on reddit. Plenty safe from enrage, and much more chill.

2: Needless cheat on the deathsingers because of temptation during a 5 min break. we were doing it right already (although the guide method is slightly less error prone (more room for error on DPS, less room for error on jumpers))

3: Oryx. Required cheat. We had almost the right idea, but had parts of the mechanics out of sequence so it would never work. bashed our heads against it for several hours before the working people quit out. read guides, Hoya and I finishied it after a further 4 hours of attempts with some fine people from LFG. One was insanely fast at jumping, helped a ton.
I did pretty bad for loot (304 titan mark and a 305 scout rifle), tho do have max 296 light now (294 max to start)

edit: Spimp13 good to see you jump in! Easily the best PVE expansion there has been - barely played crucible the entire week myself Would have been a massive shame if you missed it because of the PVP focus in the last DLC, imo.

Definitely welcome back spimp. There's so much new content. Took me a good 36 hours to grind one guy up to 295. Ive only just started the others. Its a lot easier with alts because you can transfer guns, engrams etc. Game is so much better now

Thanks guys. I just finished the story mode last night with my hunter who is now level 39 with 197 light. I'm thinking maybe try to bump him up as much as possible before even playing the other guys since the guns will give an initial boost to the light for the alts.

Is it true pretty much all the old guns and armor are going to be useless? Even if you infuse it with something else (still haven't looked this up yet) doesn't it take the average so any of our old favorite guns will not be max power?

Anyway, I'll try to get my hunter's light level up high enough to run stuff with you guys. Cheers

I didn't infuse a weapon until I was over light lvl 290. I've only infused a hand full of items and I'm using high lvl blue item's to infuse/increase the light level of exotic's and legendary's I like. Hell I don't even upgrade the gear that I find because every piece is easily replaceable until about light lvl 290

No alt's for me and pretty much every one on here I believe. Transferring 290+ guns and a ghost over to alt's will give them a significant boost when it's time.

Yeah other than regular crucible mode (not trials or IB) they're weapons parts. If you were doing year one stuff they're good but going forward trash. Can't infuse them

I got one of my alts to 40 in a couple hours and then saved a legendary engram for it and bought a chest piece with marks. In about 3 hours total got it to 280.

Data point;
Did 4 lvl 36 strikes in a row last night, no legendaries but ended up with 4 290+ items, will have to repeat to see if it was run-good or normal.

Pro tip: leveling is intentionally curbed (per Luke Smith) after you hit 290, so drop down to 280 when you decrypt blues for higher chances at 290+ items.

Fastest way to power level light once 270 just grind Court of Oryx. Even if you dont have runes some will randomly drop plus you'll get tons of engrams. If no one is there in your instance just orbit and rejoin. Eventually you'll find a big group.

Finally binked a 290 hawkmoon and 4th horseman (im obv on XB1). both are so fun. Weird bug: hawkmoon says 11 in the mag in its description, but I get 13 with no armor buffs?

Dismantling purples. Try to have a few nodes filled with xp I sharded one that was maybe 75% leveled and got 5 marks

Marks really aren't all that important, it's so much easier to get better gear in the wild with the exception of a ghost.

I'm just spending my marks on exotics and vendor items that could be useful for a particular build.

A 310 artifact of your choice, but you only have 2 options. I got some kind of DRUM with discipline and strength, which is obviously the nut low roll but whatever.

So after much wiping and STRESS last night, I think the things that stand out are actually not the mechanics.

If you wanted to sum this raid up without spoilers, I think you'd say that you:

1. Step on triggers, or something like it;

2. DPS stuff;

3. Try not to die to adds.

Almost every phase really does turn into a DPS race. You're on a DPS clock over and over again.

Detailed spoilers below:

Spoiler:
Just gonna ignore everything before the Deathsingers, except to point something out about the maze. There's a chest in there, hidden behind a door. There are 4 platforms in the maze. To figure out the pattern, you have to - wait for it - feel the vibration. This is funny, because either 2 or 3 of us have Scuf controllers with the rumblers out, and I would bet all of us play with vibration off anyway? Maybe not, but still, turn on vibration for that part I guess. Also, lol. A subtle, elegant troll.

Deathsingers

Larry, you were right that you can DPS the Deathsingers in one phase. The problem is let's say you do but don't kill the second one because someone is out of Special ammo or just isn't fantastic with their aim, or because she moves her hands in front of her face a few too many times, etc. Then you just wipe. The elite teams will surely begin just DPSing her down, and at higher light levels I'm sure we will too, but the grind LFG teams are gonna default to damage - damage - kill - kill, at least for a little while. This means that a random relic jumper is gonna have to handle the third person, lens flare, bright flashes jumping task 4 times, meaning there are 4 failure points just right there. Factor in that from time to time your sprint just doesn't engage and you miss the jump - this caused a wipe last night when my sprint didn't sprint, was annoying - and that the collision detection with the platforms sucks, and you conclude that it's just down to a little variance whether a run on just the relic jumping goes well. That said, we played with one dude who was just unbelievable at relic jumping on his titan. He basically just skated to everything, he'd have the relic way before we ever had time to get everything else done. Was impressive. I'd practice this if I knew where to practice it.

Oryx

Spoiler:
The Oryx fight is a more complicated version of the Deathsingers. You do have a new advantage: you can pick your relic jumper. This is fantastic, because if you have a good one - disko did like 20 in a row last night, I feel like - you can compartmentalize tasks and just get things done.

The mechanic is as follows: you activate the plates counter-clockwise, like we were doing.

Relic jumper grabs relic.

People on plates need to kill their Light Eating Ogres. It's important for two reasons. First, you need the black balls of light (what a stupid phrase - black ball of light, that is black... anyway). Second, the Ogre beams are brutal and basically just snipe people out of the air on their way to the next phase. Any death is an insta-wipe.

Best method of ogre killing seems to be sniping and then primary. You are directly responsible mostly for the Ogre ACROSS from you, rather than next to you. Your teammate ACROSS from you is responsible for the Ogre next to you. The Ogres DO NOT spawn simultaneously, so you can work together obviously, but the guy with the great sniper angle should be critting the Ogre across from him very easily.

Meanwhile, your relic jumper will call out that they have the relic. As soon as they have the relic, everyone leaves their platform and congregates in the middle. A Titan should always drop Weapons of Light in the exact middle so that we can boost our DPS.

There will be a Knight with a bubble shield. Everyone should help the relic holder kill this Knight - relic jumper should just shotgun or sword this Knight to make this fast - and this will steal the bubble. This bubble will save our lives during all the light explosions, and prevent adds from hurting us. Big deal.

If we time this properly, Oryx will now be slapping his platform a second time. This is our hint that he's about to open his chest. When his chest opens, everyone blasts the open spot. It's a DPS test, with a twist: if he doesn't take damage from ALL SIX PEOPLE, it doesn't matter how much you do (I am pretty sure about this, not positive, but it seemed to happen multiple times where we were rocking him with 5 and still wiped). So there can be no deaths before this phase. Any death is an insta-wipe because you are either ACTUALLY, or at least practically, barred from completing this part.

If everyone shoots him and does decent damage, he will stagger backwards.

At the moment he staggers backwards, the 4 platform people will each SPRINT to the black ball by their platform, and stand in it until they get the detonation message. This is the part we were doing backwards, for which I take responsibility. We were doing the right thing, but too early and thus out of sequence. The balls damage him by detonating, but not until after he staggers.

The second the platformers get the detonation message, they will SPRINT back to the relic jumper's bubble, in order to survive the massive detonation. I think you have something like ten seconds for this whole thing, and 5 of those seconds are taken up soaking up your black ball of light, so this is a tight squeeze.

Note, though, that dying to the explosion because you didn't quite get back to the bubble isn't a big deal. We'll have a chance to res you without any loss, so at THIS part a death is sort of fine, maybe even sort of useful given the next run around for no reason task.

There is now a moment where it is possible to do additional DPS from within the bubble, so take the opportunity to continue blasting him for a couple seconds.

Now there will be a huge light explosion. Once the massive detonation goes off, the relic holder will lose the bubble. The platformers should retreat to their platform again, and literally - this is so dumb, but it's right - run ring-around-the-rosie at their platform. You're just making sure you're constantly moving because there's a really weird like, chase-y set of explosions that sort of track you. You just have to be moving, and if you intersect with someone else, you'll take damage. So just run a circle around your platform. It's dumb. Do it.

The relic holder should just sprint up and back along the middle straight line, so he doesn't intersect with anyone.

The sixth person should run ring-around-the-rosie at the stairs at the entrance. Just be moving and you'll live. If you die, you stopped sprinting. Don't do that (I guarantee someone will die due to Destiny's annoying sprint glitch).

Once you get through two phases of this, there is a new mechanic:

He will move to the far end of the level, and open a black portal. It will suck one person into another dimension, to fight a Shade of Oryx. He will swoop around in the smoke-y ether, and you have to kill him. As the fight goes on, more and more people will be sucked in. This is another DPS test, and it's functionally A LOT like the Darkblade strike.

Note that the people OUTSIDE the portal should be killing the adds that are rushing into the portal. It's really hard to clear the adds inside the portal and also DPS the Shade. This part, honestly, is easy if everyone just commits to shooting the Shade.

Kill the Shade, and everyone will be teleported back out.

Everyone retreats to their jobs at their platforms or relic jumping, etc., and you do another phase of platforms -> ogres -> knight -> DPS Oryx's chest -> stand in black balls -> run back to bubble -> explosion.

Then he'll suck you into a second identical Shade fight.

Once you complete the Shade fight a second time, he will be at the front again, nearly dead. This is another DPS opportunity. This is when you kill him by unloading into his chest while he heaves.

Anyway, yeah. EXECUTION is the thing, which was true, but not to this extent, in the other raids. This raid is awesome.
