if they're cheap off the racks your tailor likely won't be able to do much since the fabric and linings won't be properly proportioned for work.

IMO if you don't have a personal tailor that you take stuff to you should always buy your menswear at a place that will do the fitting as part of the purchase. Reason being is that they have incentive to do it right since 1) your a walking billboard for their clothes and work AND 2) if they screw up the work you're unlikely to come back. Plus once you develop a relationship with the shop you can typically bring stuff you've purchased in for alterations for little or no charge.

However if you're able to find a really good tailor that only does tailoring that works as well too since you can then just shop for the best bargain and not worry about whether or not they do good in house work.

FWIW I have a menswear shop that does great in house tailoring that I use for sport coats and the occasional suit. But for more expensive items that I want to shop around for (like my tux for my wedding) I have a tailor that I go to. The tailor is a little pricier so I wouldn't use him for everything, but he does really good work.

also one thing to note: If you have a bunch of dress shirts that are ill-fitting (blouse at the waist, sleeves too long, too loose or tight around the armpit) you can often take them to a tailor and for a reasonable fee turn them into nice fitted shirts. Granted you don't want to do this with some off the rack department store $25 dollar job. But for nice dress shirts that you're paying 80-100 for a 15 dollar fitting is totally worth it. Same for nice jeans if you've lost some weight or they're slightly too long.

also you'd be shocked at how reasonably priced it is to have dress shirts made for you at a certain tailor shops. Keep an eye on places like groupon and you'll occasionally see specials where for about the same price you'd pay for a nice dress shirt you can pick the fabric and have it fitted and made specifically for your size and your style preference.

imo I'd only buy a 100% wool suit, preferably super 100 or 110 worsted. the only alternative is if you already have a solid wardrobe and you have need of a linen suit specifically for summer stuff in warm weather. but that has to be the right occasion as you're not just going to wear a linen suit anywhere just cause it's hot. and linen doesn't travel well since you have to dry clean it and it gets wrinkled very easily.

I guess if you're buying a winter sport coat you could get tweed, but again that's a specific item. just stay away from polyester or blends unless you're broke.

also if it's going to be your go-to suit it should be black or charcoal, two button, notch lapel, and I prefer double venting but single venting is fine as well.

a small pinstripe is certainly fine, but I think a plain fabric is better for your first go-to suit.

you get one of these fitted well and you'll always be stylish and looking good.

Yea, I'm assuming you want to buy online because you're finding better deals or something? I would def try the exact suit you are buying first to make sure you like the way it fits. Or at least make sure there's a reasonable way to return it if it fits poorly.

fwiw gilt has free returns so buying off them is not a problem if you end up wanting to ship it back.

If you wanna go unballer...

www.studiosuits.com

My brother in law found this site to get cheaper suits for him and groomsmen @ my sisters wedding. It was like 130$ and took 3 weeks to deliver from Mumbai. Did the measurements myself and it came really small. If you wanna order online, make sure its bigger rather than smaller so you can take it to a tailor and they can shrink it up. Too small and your fked. I was able to fit into mine fine ok, but it was a little uncomfortable.

Puzzle, ty for all the info. I actually went and picked up a suit earlier today, and I'm really happy with it. I will be buying a few more tho, and will definitely use your advice. And yeah, good point about getting dress shirts fitted, that's definitely something I'm going to look into.

i agree on first suit should be solid

i disagree on using in-house tailors, they're the nut low - find a good one on yelp and stick with them
