I like it as an origin story for both Joker and Batman - it makes sense as a realistic, adult version of that comic book world.

I think Robert DeNiro was miscast - he doesn't do "cuddly, beloved TV host" very well. He's just too menacing.

It's also reminds one of a lot of other, better films: Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Fight Club....and others....and that make it perhaps less great on its own.

It's also got something worth saying, even if it's a fairly obvious point.

Interesting....still thinking about it.
Best review I've heard yet:

It's "Passion of the Christ" for Juggalos.

First Love (2019 Miike Takeshi)

Rocky!

You must be tired from prison: I've booked you a room in a spa!

You're dealing with: A large tumor!

Hallucinations: I see people!

Don't get blood on my pants: I can't wear them again!

For now: I don't think you should go back to work!

Dancing-hallucination-in-his-skivvies Fu!

I want to see things myself: But I don't want to take drugs!

Sword Fu; Gun Fu; Taser Fu!

GPS Fu; SUV Fu; General Badassery Fu!

Yakuza Fu; Triad Fu!

Speed Freak Fu; Captive-girl Fu!

How many: Does that make today?

Just-Say-No Fu!

Nothing-is-as-it-seems, nothing-goes-right, caper/vengeance/sexual-slavery film. Think of written-by Donald Westlake on a tub of bad acid.

Raunchy, Extremely violent, Extremely bloody: So a great date pic!

Miise Takashi at the very very top of his game--with one of his patented freaky endings.

If you are in to this kind of thing, this is the best you will get to see for a while. Check it out!

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Don't ever let yourself think you know who the next badass will be.

The Audition made me wary of Miike films. Several years have passed, and I’m still trying to erase my memories of the stomach churning torture scenes. Is First Love as nasty?

Love is always nasty. First, second, third etc; in fact, it usually becomes nastier with each round. Which is why so many are duped into it, repeatedly. Ding-ding-ding!

See Shakespeare if you have doubts. If still not convinced check out The Decameron by Boccaccio.

No. There's some decapitated heads mugging for the camera, but that's the worst. The thing about Miike is that he does all kinds of movies from G up.

They made a trailer for the movie sort of hint at it, and twitter lost its mind, as is its wont. That was a month before anyone had seen the film.

Some of the scenes have stayed with me, but most of the storytelling seems to have bounced right off...

Sure sign of a Cheap Trick of a movie, mostly.

Some people/entities are raking in piles of money however.

And that's what movies are for, mostly.

Finally saw this after wanting to see it but missing it in theaters. Mindless fun is about right. Thought it wrapped up sort of abruptly, but I enjoyed a lot of the performances. The scene with Cynthia Erivo singing while Jeff Daniels digs was great.

London Film Festival is on. First for me was The Whistlers, a Romanian thriller where everyone is a criminal or corrupt. The odd gimmick is that they code their communications by whistling.

It’s pretty slick, if tricky to follow at times due to jumping between timeframes and characters. Unfortunately the lead actor lets the proceedings down with a dull, expressionless performance. As good as the film was, it could have been better with a stronger lead.

I’m looking for any thoughts on the following list of movies. They’re on my Saved List in my Netflix queue, and I don’t think they’ll be made available any time soon.

They are movies I haven’t seen but want to see, and my only option now is to buy them individually.

Most of them aren’t must-sees, but I could be persuaded.

The Long Voyage Home
Act of Violence/Mystery Street
Vampire Hunter D
Paranoia Agent
Shivers
Angels with Dirty Faces
Dinner at Eight
Clash by Night
Subway (1985)
Obsession (1976)
The Driver
La Rupture
The Set-Up
City on Fire
The Human Stain
Targets
Images
Sudden Fear

El Camino
I'll repost what I posted in an OOTV Breaking Bad thread: <<I thought it was pretty good and it didn't do anything to sour the Breaking Bad legacy at all. That being said, it felt pretty unnecessary. Not really sure why Gilligan wanted to make this movie.>>

Obviously, don't watch it unless you've watched all of Breaking Bad.

Meeting Gorbachev

Decent enough watch but probably the most uninterested I've found myself during a Werner Herzog documentary. It was nice to learn more about Gorbachev's background and gain a better understanding of his positive impact on the world, but the documentary didn't seem to have much of an identity or agenda beyond promoting appreciation for Gorbachev and I felt like Gorbachev ultimately left some things off the table. As far as character studies go, it felt like it could have probed deeper.

Obsession is worth watching if you like Brian De Palma, he does those things he does. And it has the great Geneviève Bujold in her prime, she was one hot tamale.

They are all garbage and you are peeling your life away in small pieces of mindless entertainment.

Shotgun your TV and computer and iphone, and read a book. Start with this one:

Kioshk, thanks for the feedback.

I’m not a big De Palma fan, but I’ve heard some of his best work is his earliest stuff, which I prefer (Sisters, Carrie, The Fury, Blow Out). I don't like Dressed to Kill (maybe similar to Obsession?) or Scarface. Raising Cain's awesome.

But your Geneviève Bujold argument is, as I’ve discovered with the aid of google images, very persuasive. She’s stunning. I’ll probably check it out, thanks again.

Zeno, pull yourself together, man. Everyone’s watching.

Under the Silver Lake

This could have been David Lynch meets True Detective but it needed a good editor. There's a gem of a good movie in there and some scenes are great but it goes on way too long, it meanders all over the place.

it was like big lebowski meets inherent vice but the worst of each instead of the best of each.

I wanted to like it so badly but just couldn't.
