Spoiler:

Super disappointed Robert Duvall wasn't leading the moon-buggy caravan, since they were doing the whole Apocalypse Now thing anyway.
It really was a very poorly made rip off of that film.

As Clovis mentioned, how Pitt gets back to his ship from the Lima is just ****ing stupid.

As for the comparison to BR2049, Ad Astra always looked like a movie set to me. Blade Runner 2049 looks like a whole world.

Ad Astra is an effing mess... any movie that uses the basis of space and science as a vehicle for reflective and introspective ideas and yet completely disregards Newtonian physics should be taken out and burned on a pyre.

AND YET, I think brad pitt was perfectly cast and delivered a great performance and the movie had a wonderful melodic score... amongst the drivel were strings of satisfaction.

I doubt I will ever watch the movie again... Tron: legacy did it better.

Haven't seen Ad Astra.

Hated Contact, the alien was her dad, how stupid!

Will I equally hate Ad Astra, or worth a watch?

Contact is an truly great film. The alien was not her father lol. Ad Astra is trash.

How in the hell is Lopez in her 50s?
It's a solid addition to the growing genre of films about the housing crash, but I agree its probably in its best role as a fun caper film.

I thought Hustlers was OK right after I watched it, but I keep thinking about it and about the characters. That's a sign that it seems to be going up in my estimation. I'll have to watch it again eventually.

btw, I never thought it was a caper film, any more than I thought The Big Short or Wolf of Wall Street were.

^ I loved the Hustlers movie. It was based on a true story and I think J Lo did a fantastic job!! Now the real hustler chick is trying to sue the studios, she should have negotiated better.

Saw Rambo:Last Blood and it is a fast moving movie. The story line is very good and covers the cartels and sex trafficking. Very violent in certain scenes though. Would never recommend parents that have kids to take them to this.

Contact was a great film, most people who trash it just don't like the premise that maybe Judeo Christian belief isn't as widely accepted as they would like.

the thin red line blew my mind, i absolutely loved it when it first came out and thought it was an absolute masterpiece

it was a film i thought would build and be rewarding with additional viewings, it was the opposite, the more times i've seen it the worse and more boring it becomes like i can now see through the schtick and realize that general thoughts and feelings don't substitute for storyline

i've seen the rest of malicks stuff and i just can't get into it, they are beautifully made piece of art - but i think a lot of the praise comes from those who believe their inability to make heads or tales of something so beautifully made makes it that much deeper when there isn't any depth at all because there is no story, just a series of ideas and thoughts put together in stunningly beautiful visual medium and backed by a great score

also, anyone here see the wandering earth? i found major holes in but really liked it, made me think a lot about stuff, which i think is the end goal of all good scifi.

I liked it. It reminded me of good 1950s SciFi (Kids save the day!!!111): lots of holes but lots of cool stuff to watch and think about.

Watched it on Hulu last night thanks to John Cole . It is one of those special sexy French genre "lets talk about love" movies. The movie dialogue is the key here. I would say it is about the many whimsical, capricious, quirky reasons that people form attractions to others and then, for other arbitrary reasons, fall out of love. I think it is meant to be comical in a sarcastic and intellectual way but makes you think whether "true love" is even possible in the current world. The book upon which it is based was highly popular. I enjoyed it but it is not for everyone. Looking at reviews, people either were polarized, loved it or hated it.

btw I happened to notice Lover's Discourse (taiwan, 2010) is another movie based on the book.

surprised wandering earth got so many views, i actually saw it in China, we knew nothing of it, just that it was smashing box office records so decided to check it out

first of all, like many things, china has a massive overcapacity of movie theaters, there are often several on every block so most of them are always running 80% off deals and you're still in an empty theater for the most part - this one was first time theater wasn't empty and first 4 shows were all sold out with only a handful remaining for the final showing of the evening

but... the reason why we'll have a lot more films like this going forward is that the people behind this film fundamentally didn't know what they were doing. many hadn't made a film before and that's a huge reason for the massive amount of plot holes. they also had to dramatically alter the tone at the last minute when they pivoted from super dark to a family friendly holiday film - but most importantly, the entire main plot of the obstructing planet doesn't exist in the short story it is based upon - it's basically fan fiction set in a universe that exists in the short story it's sourced from

given that it took some people who really broke the mold and created this outside their studio system, we're going to see a lot more epic films coming out of china instead of what we get today - which is mostly melodrama or slapstick comedy backed by an all star ensemble cast of people who can't act very well

perhaps the best chinese film i've ever seen is Zhang Yimou's 1994 epic "to live" which is not just beautiflly crafted but also really sets up all the hell that most Chinese went through to get them to the basic survival mentality they have today https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Live_(1994_film)

I mean, it's an incredibly stupid movie but it has this charming sincerity to it, it's like watching a classic 1950's B-movie. It's ridiculous, but I found myself cheering for the protagonists nonetheless.

Three Identical Strangers is a well-made doc about triplets separated at birth. They reunite and do the talk show circuit... then things get weird. The triplets are charismatic and the story / conclusions are pretty wild. 8/10

Longshot was funny. Rogan is always my kind of humor, so I’m biased, but this all felt fresh enough. 7/10

Coherence is a solid, low-budget, sci-fi movie about a dinner party on the night of a comet. Things get very strange and I enjoyed the concept, but I can’t say much more. Little rough around the edges. 6/10

Leave No Trace is a very good, slow-moving drama that is quite sad. It’s about a 14 year old girl and her troubled father who live in the woods together. Ben Foster and the girl play off each other nicely. Well directed by the director/writer of Winters Bone. 8/10

Den of Thieves

Caught this on one of the cable premium channels. It's ok. Heist movie where the bad guys are very bad, unlike, say, Ocean's Eleven where you root for the thieves. Gerard Butler leads a group of thugish cops who march to the beat of their own drum. There is some attempt to develop a couple characters, but it largely fails.

One comment on the climax of the film:

Spoiler:
It seems really irresponsible of Butler and his cop team to start a fire fight in the middle of two lanes of cars in a traffic jam.
