I didn't have huge expectations but it felt more like star wars junk they keep releasing than what I expected from the mcu.

There were some bad one like gotg 2, thor's and avengers 2 but i really did enjoy infinity war and previous movies like captain america, gotg, spiderman and iron man + Im looking forward to Endgame. But i have a feeling its gonna go downhill fast after that with the MCU.
Black panther Dr strange and ant man all were good standalone movies I can understand people not wanting to watch them because they are bored by super hero stuff but they all have undeniable qualities that Captain marvel lacked.

I also try to keep expectations sufficiently low enough to enjoy Marvel movies, but sometimes it's just not enough. I guess one good thing to come from seeing Captain Marvel is that now my Endgame expectations are even lower.

When I was a kid, I thought certain forms of entertainment were for children only. I was shocked to find adults actually watched stuff I did.

So true. I'll stay away from fast food, thanks. GL to those who enjoy it!

Now we're shocked when kids *don't* watch what we do. I have to confess that Star Trek is pretty much schlocky dreck, and kids have the right to their own schlocky dreck.

Plus we had no options back in the day. 3 channels and the movie theater. Now you have 500 channels and Netflix, Prime, Hulu, YouTube, dvds, internet porn. video games and social media nonsense. A lot of great stuff although preserved will be lost in time because nobody will have the time or inclination to watch all of it.

Been listening to a fun and very enjoyable podcast called Unspooled. On each episode 2 film critics discuss one of the films from the AFI Top 100 list. Highly recommend it.

Which AFI list? My mom picked up the bookmark from Borders bookstore for me in 1998 that has a checklist of all 100 movies from that year's list. I rented Citizen Kane on VHS (library) in the late spring of '98, and to this day I'm still checking them off, with 9 unchecked (~2 of those I've probably seen but forgot to check). Doctor Zhivago is the highest I haven't seen.

They are using the 2007 list:

https://www.afi.com/100years/movies10.aspx

They randomly pick one from the list each week and will eventually do all 100 of them. The 2 hosts are great, as a film buff I'm really enjoying it.

Someone recommended that podcast to me and I got about 30 mins into the Shawshank episode and wondered wtf I was doing with my life. I realized I have ZERO desire to listen to someone talk about The Shawshank Redemption for 90 minutes.

LOL I loved the Shawshank episode. In general I like it more when they don't really agree the movie should be on the AFI list. Shawshank is the #1 rated film on IMDB (think it's in the 70s somewhere on the AFI list), but it's hard to find any film critic who thinks it's a "great" movie.

No interest in seeing Captain Marvel for two reasons:

- The name Captain Marvel. They literally named a superhero after their own company.

- Brie Larson. There's just something irrationally annoying about her. Not as annoying as someone like Jeff Bridges, Shailene Woodley, or Miles Teller. Certainly moreso than Russell Crowe. Maybe on par with Ben Foster.

That's not a bad list, but I'd rather hear film critics discussing Sight and Sounds' top 100 or even this one: https://imagejournal.org/top-100-films/

Actually another comic book company first published a character with the name Captain Marvel. The Marvel company of course was not thrilled by that, and they eventually got the rights to the name. Then they had to make a new character with the name CM to keep the trademark.

The old version of the character still exists and can even use the CM name in the comics, but not in their titles or advertising. The name was changed to "Shazam", and there is a movie by that name and featuring that character coming out soon. I remember watching the TV show based on the character when I was a kid.

Triple Frontier

Starts off good. Ultimately becomes boring and forgettable. So many questionable decisions. Waste of a good cast.

Not watching a movie because of the name of the character is weird.

Even weirder because I don't think she's called that at any point in the movie (maybe right at the end).

Apollo 11 was outstanding, especially in IMAX. The restoration of mostly unseen NASA footage is incredible. Perfect score, beautifully edited. There is no narration, save for the occasional Walter Cronkite bit.

This should be mandatory viewing in all schools.

What struck me was how young Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins looked. While I was growing up, they were giants. But now, I'm 20 years older than they were then. Makes me teary.

To me, this is still the most impressive, most awe-inspiring technological and exploratory achievement in the history of mankind.

Go see it on the big screen!

So glad you saw it. I agree with every word.

I remember watching the TV show. There was also sometimes another show with a "Wonder Woman"-ish super hero that was like an Egypt princess name Isis that was a babe.

Isis and Shazam power hour!

Actually, there was no Marvel Company (at least, not under that name) when Fawcett Comics was publishing Captain Marvel (aka Shazam!) in the 1940s and early 1950s. Marvel didn't become Marvel until 1961. Fawcett quit publishing Capt. Marvel in 1953 due to a copyright lawsuit filed by DC Comics stating that the character was basically a ripoff of Superman.

Once Fawcett stopped publishing Captain Marvel, the copyright eventually expired and then Marvel acquired it in 1967. DC reintroduced the Shazam character in 1972, but couldn't advertise it as Captain Marvel because Marvel then held the trademark to the name.

That pretty accurately sums up the problem with captain marvel imo: shes a copy of the most boring super hero.

I stream Overwatch, Apex Legends, Sea of Thieves, various PS4 single player campaign games, and "Just Chatting," where I sit there and talk with people. I'm told I have a soothing voice, so people enjoy listening to me talk. Would love to hang out. twitch.tv/thecroshow I'm live Friday night 7pm PST then Saturday 9am PST, usually live for 4+ hours.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - This movie gets better with every viewing. I think it's a PERFECT comedy. The opening starts out like it was shot out of a cannon, and the movie maintains the pace throughout. You could nit some details, like how Mila Kunis' character can give Segel a $6000/night suite, but it's believable enough in context of the movie.

Each character is memorable and each person slays their delivery. If I mention "snorkeling guy" you know who I'm talking about. If I mention prudish newlywed husband, you know who I'm talking about.

The movie is endlessly quotable and this rewatch helped me realize how often I quote this movie. When my wife tells me she's going to do something I'll hit her with, "No you're not, you're going snorkeling!" "When life hands you lemons say **** the lemons and bail!"
