Predators

Adrien Brody does his best to bring some life to these warmed up left overs but a predictable plot and poor characterisation cant be overcome.

E.T

Hadn't seen it in years. Its still a great movie the special effects look a bit laughable now an then but the story's timeless.

But when comparing it to any of the LOTR movies it is massively disappointing. Some people have made these points in the OOT thread and this one but it wasn't very dark or dangerous. None of the group was ever in any real danger because they always had some magical escape, including a thousand foot fall that conveniently was slowed down enough for them to live. Now I know this happens all the time in movies, and I assume it happened in the book (I read it once many years ago, forgot everything), but again it brings me back to LOTR. In the 1st movie Frodo gets stabbed, Gandalf and Boromir die, and Merry and Pippin get kidnapped. Things were pretty real and you weren't sure who was going to be next.
I am pretty familiar with the Hobbit so this criticism doesn't bother me. It is more of a fantasy/child's story, than LOTR, which is a little more gritty. I am just hoping for a very fun ride when I see this. I'm disappointed to hear that the beginning was slow as I thought the pacing might be better than the Fellowship. Even if there isn't too much action in the beginning, I hope it could be light hearted and "fun," allowing for an enjoyable movie experience.

I just looked that up on IMDB and you fibbed (got my hopes up....)

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait for it, like I've been waiting for that movie of all movies.

And if it's a hit we'll do all the big ones: Newton, Euclid, Euler, and Riemann.

City of God, still as good as I remembered

Killer Joe - Loved McConaughey's performance. The rest I'm not so sure. I'm glad I watched it, not sure I dug it though. Kinda neutral.

The Invisible War - A documentary about sexual assault in the US military and the lack of justice for an unforgivable act. It still shocks me that ppl can blame victims when they are raped. An unsettling watch which left me feeling angry.

Marina Abramovic The Artist is Present - A documentary about the grandmother of performance art. Some of it was pretentious to me, but otherwise quite moving. If you're a doc fan, give it a spin.

Wild Bill, a film about Wild Bill, who gets out jail after 8 years to find that his wife has ran off to Spain and abandoned their two sons. The two sons, now 15 and 11 are living on their own and Bill accidentally tells his probation officer this bit of information so he needs to stick around for a few weeks to make sure that they don't get put into foster care before he leaves town.

Pretty predictable plot, but it's done incredibly well and has its own way of tackling the cliches bound to come up with this type of film. It's incredibly funny and a great movie. It takes place in England, so the cast has trouble speaking English, but after that problem is overcome it's really a touching film and worth a watch.

Savages

Watched this a couple of nights ago. It´s pretty bad, although I guess it is entertaining since I got to the end without being bored. I think there is a good movie somewhere in the mess that it was. It was well shot, and the acting from Del Toro and Trovolta was very good, but some of the lines and some of the story is just terrible. Is there any reason why when Selma Hayak and her daughter are on the phone they are alternating between English and Spanish, no one does that, it makes no sense at all.
Spoiler:
The 3 way relationship makes no sense at all either, the girls not bad looking but she doesn´t have much going for her, I don´t see what´s in it for the guys.

The Dark Knight Rises

Watchable enough, but nowhere near as good as Nolans previous 2.

I'm kinda late but Moon (2009).

Quote:
Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.
I really liked 2001: A Space Odyssey. This isn't as thought provoking but still doesn't lack atmosphere.

Spacey Kevin is always cast wel..

Lost Highway - ... wat?

That's exactly what I said after finishing it. I re-watched it the next day, and it does make a bit more sense now.

I enjoyed it. It had me thinking about it the whole day, and there's not too many films that do that.

I didn't get that movie for so long. I just knew that I liked it and the soundtrack kicked ass. After decoding Mullholland Drive I revisited LH and all the sudden everything snapped into place. Okay, not everything. But at least now I think I have an idea what the plot is.

Lost Highway does not have quite as coherent a plot line as Mulholland Drive, but I love it anyway. The tone is amazing.

Don't hear that every day, huh? "Not as coherent as Mulholland Drive."

yay we agree on something! I love the tone of those movies. A lot of friends/people complain about how they dont make sense and how they are bad etc but I just love the feel in them

Watched Moonrise Kingdom last night, and thought it was fantastic. Both child leads were excellent and had great nuance in their roles.

However, that's really not the point of this post. While watching, two things came to mind:

1. The Netflix 5-star system needs to be re-worked to include more data points (e.g. half stars)

2. Harvey Keitel is at his best while yelling

And naked?

The Angels' Share is really good. Watched it last night. Funny and about scotch so win-win. Kind of hard to understand the accents, at least it was for me.

It has always frustrated me that Netflix quess for my rating of a movie includes fractions of a star, yet I'm not allowed to actually rate a movie that way.

The Invisible War was very good and quite upsetting. It's amazing to me that women in the military can be subjected to this kind of abuse and neglect. After watching it, I feel the need to do something about it.

The theater in my small town closed last summer, leaving us film-less. A couple weeks ago my wife was asked to be on the board of directors for the new theater renovation project. Today I read their business plan, which is full of awesome, but one particular thing that struck me was their plan to work with the David Lynch foundation to do a film festival. If it's his movies, movies he picks out, or movies similar to his... I don't care. I'm in.

I wish the names of the criminals could be published at the end of the film. I realize that wouldn't be legal or a measurable form of justice but it would be something.
12-19-2012 , 07:41 PM
Yeah, that would open a whole legal storm if they did that.

I think it's absurd that the only recourse a victim had was to go to their Unit Commander. That was amazing to me. Glad that was changed earlier this year.
