Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2 Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

I'm really hoping Burlesque is as entertainingly bad as Showgirls.

It makes the first look like the War and Peace of Giant Robot movies

haha fair enough, not sure what my point was exactly

just trying to explain why i wasnt blown away by winter's bone

acting was fine and all, i just didnt care for Ree at all, not sure why

What's the really significantly bad aspect of it? I assume it's "all bad," but there has to be something specific it's most horrific at.

I'm guessing the plot is one of the wider gaping abysses. Accurate?
11-21-2010 , 07:59 PM
It's incomprehensible. All of the whirling robots are indistinguishable from each other, so you never know who is kicking whose butt.
11-21-2010 , 08:12 PM
That's not true. There are a couple of robots, you know which two I'm talking about, that are baldly racist creations. Stupid characters, but quite distinct.

The plot is absent. The dialogue could have been written better by a ten year old Russian that didn't know a word of English. Not an actor alive could have compensated for the atrocious acting by Megan Fox.

Edit: I may be onto something. I think I'll see if I can find a Russian dub and watch it that way.

I haven't but it sounds fun.

For me the worst films are not the B-films that are not really trying to be great. It's the ones that actually have the money and talent to be great but don't even try. Off the top of my head I would have;

1) without a doubt Tran 2
2) Battlefield Earth
3) The final two Matrix Films
4) Van Helsing
5) DeadGirl
6) The Box
7) Indiana Jones 4
8) Every M Night film since Sixth Sense
9) All torture porn
10) Southland Tales
11-21-2010 , 08:21 PM
hahaha thanks for the impromptu list! I agree that B-movies shouldn't be included, though it is all the more astonishing when a B-movie's quality puts it at the top of a Best Of list.

I thought the second Matrix film was great setup with piss-poor payoff in the third film. The Box is pretty bad, but you'd actually put it in your top ten worst? How in the hell is The Box worse than TF1?
11-21-2010 , 08:22 PM
Transformers 1 was a very poorly written, lazily made, derivitive, cheesy, cliche-filled movie. Yet it is entertaining in spite of it's badness (much like most of Michael Bay's movies are). Transformers 2 is just an incomprehensibly mess of a movie. Most of the time you literally have no idea why a scene exists, what is going on plot-wise, and during the action scenes you cannot even tell who is fighting who or which robot is winning. It's just a colossal failure of a movie.

it's worse than my grammar is in this post.
11-21-2010 , 08:27 PM
hahaha. Perfect ending BrokeDonk. Well played.

Also, The Box is a lot worse than TF1. The Box is one of the few films I sort of stopped paying attention to while watching it...in favor of just daydreaming.
11-21-2010 , 08:31 PM
I suppose it is worth conceding that I finished watching TF1 but turned off The Box 40 minutes in.
11-21-2010 , 09:00 PM
I liked the idea of it a lot. It just was executed horrible. I suppose I'll start A Prophet now. I'm not sure I expect to finish it. I don't know if I can toss in 2.5 hours when I have some prepping to do for tomorrow.
11-21-2010 , 09:04 PM
hahaha...Clovis, you haven't seen enough bad films!

Indie Sex: Censorship and Extreme

"Yes art is dangerous, where it is chaste it is not art"- Picasso.

This is a pretty great two-part documentary about the history of sex in film.
It traces the history of sex and censorship in film from the first moving pictures to today. It is not only a great historiography, but it makes a compelling case that censorship is both morally loathsome and doomed to failure.

It has some very interesting discussions including;

-Comparing the original 1967 Lolita to the 1997 remake. They make the point that the remake actually was under more censorship pressure, even though it was made 30 years later.

-Cinematic depictions of kink, fetishes and female sexuality. It has a really interesting discussion of the rape scene in Irreversible, which I still have not seen and having watched this discussion I am not sure I will ever see it.

-perhaps the most interesting discussion is an analysis of the sexual language used during the Hays code. It was fascinating to see how sex was interjected into film using widely understood codes like smoking and fade outs.

I highly recommend this series to any cinephile.

"Censorship is advertising paid for by the government" -Fellini

I really can't see how The Crow belongs on a list of worst movies ever made.
11-21-2010 , 11:29 PM
Because it is horrendous. It is definitely on my top 5 list of the worst films of all time. To be fair, I usually don't include low budget, laughable travesties like The Room or Plan 9 From Outer Space on the list, only those films that actually had a shot at being watchable in the first place.
11-21-2010 , 11:44 PM
You're obviously entitled to your own opinion, but I just think there must be tons of worse movies out there even if you dislike the movie.

You must have a special kind of hatred for it I suppose, and I'm sure some of the movies I would put in a list like that, a lot of people would be like "wtf are you talking about?"
11-22-2010 , 01:45 AM
Antichrist and/or every LVT movie in bottom 5 easily
