There is a hot chick on a ducati with no helmet, blowing stuff up and all.

I honestly don't know why it's not more popular than Twilight. I guess I do, since Twilight has the book sales behind it, but this has all of the same elements and was better done (imo).

The Artist. B&W, Silent (mostly).

I assume this movie has been discussed but haven't looked. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this film; at times it is truly outstanding and grand. This is an A movie. The two leads are simply great as are the supporting cast. Wonderful, funny, warm, charming, with pathos stirred in; plus a dog. Silent film at its best.

Spoiler:
The very end was sheer joy expressed by dance. I thought Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were on the screen again. Wonderfully done; I take off my Top Hat.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Loved it. The first half of the movie is just outstanding visually.

Faster

It was what it set out to be - The Rock going around and shooting people. I went in expecting it to completely suck, but it ended up being better than it had a right to be.

Make no mistake: it's still a pretty sucky movie. But for a pure action movie, it does a lot right.

All in: B

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol
Popcorn movie-making at its best. If you actually enjoy movies (amongst "film snobs" this is seldom a given ), you'll have a blast with Brad Bird's take on the Mi series.

...Jeez, that sounds like it should be on the poster.

Anyway, I don't see too many big budget action movies in the theater anymore, but this one was clever, creative and, above all, entertaining from start to finish.

Two French films from last year:

Point Blank - a high-octane, non-stop action movie about a hospital orderly whose wife gets kidnapped and his attempt to recover her.

Rapt - a great, Chabrol-like film about a French industrialist who is kidnapped and held for ransom.

Stop watching movies and hurry Boom along please, Ryan

The Innkeepers 4/5

I love and hate scary movies. I can get so lost in them, so drawn in if it's well executed. The Innkeepers provides solid scares throughout and an interesting story.

An Inn is closing down, and hosting a few guests during it's final weekend. One of the front desk staff hosts a haunted house website and he has photos/stories/videos of his claim that the inn is haunted. His female co-worker is eager for one last chance to record proof that the inn is haunted.

The score can be subtle at times, other times it smacks you over the head. I found the score highly effective.

Yeah, I loved this movie. I was discussing to a friend how the action movie genre moved from Die Hard 1 and MI 1 like movies to Die Hard 4 and Mi4 like movies. Huge difference, but I enjoy the ridiculously impossible action

I think it was clearly the best of the Cruise MIs. The teamwork actually kinda mattered in this one, which was pretty much the whole idea behind the original MI series.

Also, this reminded me that whatever I think of Cruise's antics in reality, I think he always brings a good performance. I can't think of any acting job he did that I thought he messed up.

I dont care what he believes, thats awesome

wtf, they rally had him on the outside of the damn building? Tom Cruise is the man.

however, I didn't like this one as much as the rest of you. I thought it was weak - and it was mostly because I can't picture who the bad guy was. Who was he? I don't remember...and that's a problem. The Indian dude trying to seduce the chick spy was more memorable.

MI 1 is still the best.
M1 2 sucked even though it had John Woo.
M1 3 was great with a memorable villain and some real, dramatic stakes and intense scenes - Hoffman counting down to shooting Cruise's wife was incredibly tense.
M1 4 was entertaining. But forgettable.

I think Cruise is now basing his acting on the style of William Shatner

Come and See 8/10

Well, I give it 8/10, but not entirely sure how I feel about it. It's really, really brutal, and a glimpse into hell on earth by showing us the pure hell of the German Army rampaging through Belarussia in WW2. And it's a visual and aural assault as we see things through the experience of a 14 year-old boy who is in the repelling geurilla army.

It makes Schindler's List look like The Smurfs Movie.

What I am having trouble with is the sheer inhumanity and brutality of the Germans. I avoid the term 'Nazis', because, whilst there are nazis within the army, there's also a lot of...Germans. They are, to a man, inhuman monsters, murdering children, gang-raping young girls etc etc. OTOH, I have read about The Rape of Nanking and other similar stories about invading forces where the enemy has been demonised beforehand...so I just don't know.

A movie that is a sledgehammer to the senses.

Monsters

Low budget Si Fi romance in which a couple fall in love while crossing monster infested Mexico.

I was in the mood for a good B movie with lots of monster destruction and shaky cam. Despite its name Monsters was not that movie. It's a slower more thoughtful movie about people and their relationships. I was won over and have to say my time was much better spent watching this rather then another wildly shaking camera, screamathon, CGI monster in the city rampage.
The CGI which was famously produced on the directors laptop is also top notch.

For me, this is a masterpiece and one I will have to revisit one day, once I get up the nerve to actually view it again.

I think it is too, maybe. I wasn't taken with the early section of the film. The dialogue was stilted and odd and too non sequitur (the words I mean, not the acting), but that could be down to the translation not conveying the nuances. And the extended shots of faces...It felt like subpar Tarkovsky to me, and got me thinking 'this isn't all that'.

However, once they were caught in the forest bombing and the boy's hearing went odd, it really got great from that point on.

Favourite non-horrific bit: The girl dancing for the boy on a box.
01-11-2012 , 07:36 PM
It's definitely the translation...the whole movie is like a beautiful nightmare...I love that the director chose to quit film making after he made it, because he "had said all he needed to say." Or something.

Finally got around to seeing Midnight in Paris and I gotta say that I really really enjoyed it. I've only seen one other Woody Allen film, so I'm sure I've missed out on a lot.

I see some in this thread critiqued it, but I'll be honest, I really just enjoyed it. The tones, settings, and music were all fantastic. It made me feel a little whimsical and magical myself.

And as CroShow mentioned some time ago, I too really loved the ending.

Come and See is quite an experience. Great movie

Moneyball for a third time, god damn that movie is amazing. Razor sharp Sorkin script, well played by Pitt and Hill. Small yet effective role by Hoffman. I wouldn't be shocked to see Hill nominated for Best Supporting Actor come Oscar season. He held his ground with Pitt, not an easy feat. Who doesn't love an underdog movie??
