Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2 Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

Point Break, obviously.

It's as latently gay as Top Gun, as as much fun. I mean that in a good way.

I bow to your better judgement.

I was somewhat enticed by the film named 'Hideous Kinky' but that will have to reside in the depths of my ****e version of Sky+

Point break is in my top 100 all time. Easy choice.
01-02-2012 , 07:38 PM
haha haven't seen this for years.

5 minutes in, already full of gems

im sure "young, dumb and full of come" is poached from somewhere else though?

Point Break featuring Oscar winning Director, Kathryn Bigelow!!

Romance - ugh. ugh ugh ugh. It's a movie about this chick with relationship issues with her boyfriend. There are lots of scenes of her talking about her feelings and desires....and all of those scenes and all of the dialogue is cringe inducing and infuriatingly stupid. I hated every single sentence any character uttered in this pile of crap movie. After seeing Fat Girl (which I loved) I thought "hey, this Catherine Breillat person is pretty good, I should check out more of her movies." That was a mistake, I think this movie and her Anatomy of Hell can both be placed in my top 10 most hated movies of all time list.

Fandango - road trip movie about a group of college grads having one last hurrah before growing up. I thought it was pretty good with a bunch of very good scenes in it and a bunch of laughs too. 7/10

The Gods Must be Crazy - I thought it was very funny. It had a bunch of great scenes in it and I was constantly laughing out loud through the whole first half. It started to lose steam once they decided to put a "plot" in the movie, but before that it was a great series of gags. 7/10

Zachariah - weird, trippy, anachronistic western with a couple of wannabe gunfighters (who maybe liked each other a bit too much?) and a traveling band (literally) of robbers played by Country Joe and the Fish. The music was great and the first hour or so of the movie was a lot of fun. The third act was kind of lame, but overall I enjoyed it. 7/10

American Gangster - very entertaining movie by Ridley Scott about the Harlem gangster Frank Lucas. It's probably not a great movie and is nowhere near the level of Scott's best, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. 7.5/10

I didn't mean to imply that I thought you wrote off all action movies. I'm sure there are many well-made ones that you appreciate. I'm drawing a distinction between those and what I would classify as purely mindless action which, if done properly, can also be very entertaining, at least for me.

As another example, did you enjoy Shoot 'em Up?

I thought War Horse was pretty great, it's probably close to what you expect it to be although much darker than the trailers and advertising would lead you to believe. If you're not a Spielberg fan then stay away, if you actually have taste check it out. 9/10

I laughed at the premise when I saw the War Horse preview. A horse magically survives WWI! The very idea is a little offensive, imo, when humans were getting slaughtered right and left.
01-02-2012 , 11:44 PM
That criticism is odd, it's pretty far from perfect but I don't see how the broad plot is in any way remotely offensive.
01-02-2012 , 11:56 PM
I guess the basic idea is that hundreds of thousands of humans died, so who cares if a horse lives. But I'm not pushing this idea hard at all; it was just my impression from seeing the trailer.

Dude, I grew up on 80's action. I love Arnie and Stallone. Trust me I 'get it'. I just saw Machete recently and enjoyed it immensely. What you don't seem to get is how hideously bad 300 is compared to actually good action movies or even unintentionally bad ones.

IMO main actor done great job, acted perfectly. Would highly recomend this.

and i will said here again because I didnt saw anyone pick it up but you should watch Headhunters, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/ ,probably the best thriller in 2011.
Superb. I enjoyed the first series (3 episodes can be called a series right?) immensely. So much better than Guy Ritchie's imagining of Holmes. Looking forward to watching the new episodes.

The guy who plays Sherlock is in Tinker, Tailor btw. Also Martin Freeman who is Doctor Watson is the new Bilbo Baggins.

Antichrist

Uhhhhhh I decided to see what all of the hubbub was about. 25 minutes in and I'm turning it off. Terrible. Just terrible. The only thing that might convince me to give it a second chance is a 6 month diatribe from Rushmore, but then TAoJJBTCRF this ain't.

My diatribe was that it is a horrible, offensively awful film from a director with much greater capacities.

6 months later...

You're right, I should give it another go.

Not sure why I hadn't seen Dog Day Afternoon before (confusing with Groundhog Day maybe!?) but I got an appetite for bank robber films after watching Point Break last night.

It's pretty awesome. Why did Pacino just forget how to act when he turned 60?

Confusing a film with Groundhog Day should have increased the chances of you watching it.
01-03-2012 , 10:48 AM
Yeh but I knew I'd already seen Groundhog Day a few times
01-03-2012 , 11:07 AM
Then you've had multiple opportunities for positive reinforcement I like to watch as many new movies as possible, but Groundhog Day never fails to satisfy me on a repeat viewing.

Re: Antichrist, I put it back on, and honestly, the "controversial" aspect is the only thing that interested me about it. But the film itself is uninteresting and obvious. Too bad, because the acting is quite good. Willem Dafoe is a champ for making that dialogue sound anything approaching listenable.

I think I'll see if Groundhog Day is available for streaming.

Saw TinTin

I was underwhelmed. All the hype surrounding it, I would have thought it would have had a bit more depth to it than it did.

I know I know what was I expecting from a PG13 cartoon... but... I dunno. Just wasn't that great.

6/10

Caught part of Sherlock, the BBC series. Sherlock talks too darn fast.

I let the wife choose the movie again as I absently read. She selected Water for Elephants.

As far as chick flicks go this was very tolerable. Robert Pattinson was totally decent and I don't believe I groaned or cringed at any point, except for maybe when Reese "Glass Joe" Witherspoon had more than two lines back to back. Hrm, I just remembered some of the animal parts. I think I did groan a few times.

Rating: I wouldn't watch it again, but I also probably shouldn't be mentioning on the internet that I didn't mind this movie.

I was utterly unmoved by the "controversial" aspects, and moved to revulsion by the rest of it.

Two great docs:

The Rape of Europa - about how tens of thousands of art works were pillaged by the Nazis during WWII. Also, it's about the "Monuments Men,' American art experts who were part of invading American forces, and whose job it was to preserve Italian, German, french and other European art, monuments, and structures, whenever possible. Fascinating stuff.

Cave of Dreams - Herzog's masterpiece about cave paintings from 32,000 years ago. Possibly, one of the best, most moving and inspirational films I have ever seen. I'm still waiting to catch my breath after seeing it.

this has been bugging me for weeks; do any of you movie buffs know from which movie this is?

i think it might be a comedy from 80s/90s. basically a big black guy with a deep voice says "Yeahh" each time in support of his friend whenever his friend says something. i think he says it intimidatingly with his arms crossed but not sure.

i googled Coming to America, 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, but have come up with nothing.
