nah, its a rolex, people will go after it. You have a better chance with some of the lesser known brands IMO. Might be able to pick up the Urwerk or Richard Mille at well below market values since the number of people who can afford those pieces and know those brands are small. Or maybe you'll luck out that people won't recognize that its a Newman Daytona and price that the same as the other Daytonas.

But since its posted on Hodinkee, you'll probably have a good mix of watch people and regular people at the auction.

Your optimism is admirable.

I agree with Amoeba. If I had the money I think the thing to do would just be bring a solid gold credit card and hope for the best. Honestly I think the best discounts would not come from the RM models but the Pateks. Maybe not but I imagine the typical Patek owner is the typical BMW 7 series owner where a purchase simply MUST be new. Maybe not.

I know I'd be crossing my fingers like a little kid for that RM, though.

Am I the only surprised by the hit-or-miss factor of this collection?

Exhibit A:
IWC Minute repeater. Understated in design with low-key rose gold and a white dial. Applied numerals and a thin crocodile strap make this the perfect watch for those who demand nothing but the best

Exhibit B:

I wouldn't be surprised if that minute repeater goes for less than it should. It isn't labeled as such and a lot of "watch people" aren't super knowledgeable. To a lot of people that would look like a base/Vintage Port with an MSRP of less than $20,000(because of the gold)

I bet the MSRP on that IWC is around $80,000.

Most of the highest priced Pateks are vintage Pateks so I imagine PP to be fairly well researched and Patek wearers are typically very knowlegeable.

Case in point, the Antiquorum June 8th auction. (more eye candy)

http://forums.timezone.com/index.php...1&#msg_5677414

I do agree that going for pieces that don't clearly exhibit all of their functions like that IWC minute repeater is the way to go.

or go for something really obscure but actually very pricy like this one

this is simply incorrect. the patek secondary market is one of the strongest of all the brands not named rolex. my patek is one of two watches that i'm confident i could turn a profit on.

as well, many of the in demand pateks are simply not available to be purchased new. many hot references sell for over retail on the secondary market. the recently released 5270 will most certainly be very in demand. it replaced the 5970 which was also unavailable for just anyone to purchase (charlie sheen lost his platinum example)

IMO that collection is terrible given the type of funds obviously available to the previous owner.

Wow, good to know. I forgot that Patek can't simply "make a lot more watches"

Though, if the secondary market is selling watches for more than the primary market, isn't that some kind of economics fail somewhere?

that's debatable..

marketing exclusivity is the name of the game but also a paradox.. strong demand and resale (obv result of limited supply) is good for the long term and keeps your customer base very happy and loyal.

other brands do this as well. the stainless steel rolex daytona still cannot be purchased through an AD unless you are on good terms with them or on a "wait list" (in virtually most markets). before the economy went into the crapper they used to routinely sell for 10-20% over retail and i believe they are still changing hands at or slightly above retail in current market conditions.

btw, that auction is currently being discussed on TZ and purists and probably every watch site on the planet. there will likely be no bargains on quality pieces as long as they are complete with boxes and papers. i'd imagine provenance is good as the owner probably bought all the pieces new at a dealer.

Looks like I won't be getting that $90,000 Richard Mille I've always dreamed of for the last few hours.

I must admit I don't get the fascination with Richard Mille. Sure his watches are some of the best and most complicated in the world, and probably worth every penny from that perspective, but that doesn't change the fact that they are butt ugly and would stick out like a sore thumb no matter what your wardrobe is.

I don't like most of them, but some RMs make me drool.

I'm gonna guess thats a mod but I have no idea what movement that is with the power reserve at top and a 24 hour subdial at bottom.

G-shock gulfman is probably one of the cheaper ones that would have this, though you have to be careful, not all of them have it.

G-9100 has moon/tide but does not have atomic sync
GW-9100 has atomic sync but does not have moon/tide
GW-9110 has all of it.

Also, GW-7900 has moon/tide/atomic

Frogman GWF-1000 has all of those but is a lot pricier. There's also a new non-atomic 1000-series frogman with tide/moon but it's still a lot more than either the gulfman or 7900.

if size is a concern, go with the gulfman, the 7900 and Frog are both huge.

Has anyone mentioned the Baume et Mercier Capeland itt?

The two I really like:

10006

10007

44mm dial IIRC.

$5k ish in stainless steel
$13k ish in rose gold

( at the prices)

I just like the looks, have no idea/probably don't care what a flyback chrono is/why its worth that much money.

been mentioned, rly nice, flyback is a complication that allows you to stop and reset the chrono with the same plunger iirc.

Beautiful watches, but I can't imagine spending $13k on a baume & mercier or even $5k for that matter. I'd rather get a used JLC or something.

An impulse buy yesterday, was half price in a sale. Didn't think I'd be buying a breitling new anytime soon but deal was just too tempting.
