Sounds like Dominic is whistling thru the graveyard here. The grave eagerly awaits us all, even spry chipper 50-somethings like himself.

Let's not be mean by jumping to conclusions. Dom won a seniors-only poker tournament last year, so he probably retains at least some of his mental faculties.

Chuck Knox died too, damn good NFL coach back in the 70s and 80s. Mainly for the Rams and Seahawks I think.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but I was a Rams fan and not super happy with Chuck Knox. Winning the division every year was pretty solid, but losing 3 times to the Vikings (who we were better than) in the playoffs was pretty heartbreaking. Losing 3 times to the Cowboys was also heartbreaking, but they were better than the Vikings.

But, now that I do look back, I guess those are the breaks and 54-15-1 is pretty damn good.

RIP

I've got a feeling you weren't much of a George Allen man either, microbet! But he was probably a little before your time. Oddly, I was a big Raiders fan growing up back in the 70s despite being out in the wilds of Missouri.

Aside from his coaching the Rams for a few games in 1978 Allen's time at the Rams was right before my time. I remember him as a coach in general, but didn't have any opinion.

Like I said, Knox was actually very successful. I suppose it was the homer in me, but I thought the Rams were champion quality in the mid-to-late-70s. What we were missing was a good quarterback and the first time we had one who had a good season (Vince Farrigamo) we did make the Superbowl.

I was really a one team only kind of fan but I liked the Raiders in the Kenny Stabler days alright too.

I believe that Tom Wolfe is(was) the very best non-fiction writer evaaa. It just doesn't get better than Electric Kool-Aid and The Right Stuff. David Halberstam and Michael Lewis at their best do come close though. Wolfe was quite a character, with the white suits and the provocative opinions etc.

Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test was my gateway book.

it was my introduction to Kesey, which led to reading Cuckoo's Nest and Sometimes a Great Notion (right after moving to Eugene to attend college, which is a completely different story).

it reinforced a recent (at the time) interest in the Dead, which ultimately lead me down a wandering golden road, dozens and dozens of shows, and countless drugs.

it was my introduction to Neal, who was an obvious muse for Jack, which quickly led to an introduction to the writing of Allen, Leary, Burroughs, Huncke, Carr, Snyder, Rexroth, Corso, WCWilliams, and all of the other Beats and fringe Beats....and all of that reminds me that Ferlinghetti, the ultimate Beat librarian, is quickly reaching a century on this earth.

the introduction to Jack and his writing resulted in an interest in Bird and Bebop, leading to an interest in Miles, which resulted in me trying to trace every branch of the jazz tree that sprouted from those two.

i don't know how to quantify how many of my current interests, my belief system, and my life experiences were somehow transitively shaped by Tom Wolfe, but Kool-Aid Acid Test has definitely a huge influence on my life.

I really hope to write something about Tom Wolfe, but have been strapped for time lately. Met him once at a book signing and asked him if he ever thought of writing about gamblers. He said no, he thought Jon Bradshaw had pretty much nailed it.

Another loss that I'm not sure if many will remember is golfer Doug Ford. I never say him play, but watched his sweet short game on televised tournaments.

I liked Philip Roth too much to make a Portnoy liver joke now that he's dead. It's outrageous he never got the Nobel he deserved. Btw Blake Bailey is busy writing the official biography and Bailey is the best at that. His John Cheever bio is just about perfect, and he's also written ones for Richard Yates and the guy who wrote Lost Weekend, Charles Jackson. I haven't read the Yates one yet.
