Arghh

Bill Russell the dominant NBA defensive player. From a time before shot clocks and 3-point lines, when you had to fight it out in the paint.

Nichelle Nichols, 89.

I'm a Star Trek nerd and I can't tell you how important it was for someone like me, who grew up in a lily-white suburb, to see a person of color in a positive, intelligent role like Uhura. It made a difference. RIP

During her life, Nichols also created the NASA program, Women in Motion, which was made to recruit women and minority personnel. That program’s recruits included Dr. Sally Ride, the first female astronaut, and Air Force colonel Guion Bluford, the first African-American astronaut.

I remember an interview with Bill Russell being asked to pick the NBA's greatest players at each position. He named two guards and two forwards. When the interviewer asked who the greatest center was, Russell replied, "You're talking to him."

Saw an interview with Nichols in which she told the story of wanting to leave Star Trek at one point. Dr. King met with her and made sure she understood how important it was to have a black woman in an important role, so she stayed on.

The universe is a worse place today due to losing her.

Russell was a good player-coach with the Celtics, but later he was a hands-off negligent coach with Seattle. Pretty good announcer in the 80s, not super articulate but he got his point across and directed attention to what was important.

Maybe the greatest NBA player evaa, at the very least he belongs with 3 or 4 others in the argument.

I don't know if there is such a thing as the greatest NBA player, but if there were, Russell would be up there. One thing though, for me, he was the most fun to watch. But I really enjoy great defenders. And I was a Knicks fan.

I got to shake hands with Russell once at MSG, when I was about 8. He is still the biggest person I have ever seen in person.

I remember a Celtics-76's playoff game in 1967 when the Celtics lost to the 76's. Hal Greer, no slouch, steals a pass near half court and it looks like an easy layup on the other end. Russell takes off from the foul line, catches up to Greer, and swats the layup away. Somehow that play sticks out for me.

RIP the best. And RIP the last. There is no one that I know of left alive who is capable of calling a ballgame on the radio. Unless you consider a 2-inning discussion of bat-flipping while the action passes unnoted, calling a game. I was listening to Vin Scully in grade school, for pete's sake.

When I was kid and for much of my adult life, in SoCal during a Dodger game, if you were at the beach or shopping, at the gym shooting hoops or just outdoors in your neighborhood, you didn’t even need a radio, Vin’s voice was coming from somewhere.

Another one who was always just there. Very strange to live in a world without Vin Scully.

At lunchtime, Tim Kurkjian was on SportsCenter talking about Scully. He mentioned that, at Aaron's #715, Scully physically walked away from the mike. This to let the audience hear the crowd's reaction, and just experience the moment. That's damn good, rather than jabbering over it.

Am I correct in remembering he did the Saturday game of the week (back in the days before every game was televised, so this was a fan's only shot in a lot of markets), and he was partnered with Joe Garagiola?

Vin replaced Tony Kubek as Joe’s Saturday Game Of The Week (NBC - the only game on TV for many Americans) broadcast partner in ‘82.

Joe did play-by-play with Kubek but switched to color commentary with Vin.

I must be old AF, because when I read "Saturday game of the week back in the days before every game was televised," the first name(s) that came to mind were Dizzy Dean & Pee Wee Reese.

Jay Hanna Dean died in 1974 at the ripe ol' age of 64
Spoiler:
you old AF

and i'm pretty sure Harold Peter Henry Reese went by the stage name Pee Wee Ree in his latter years
