Politically I'm definitely more in the target audience for All in the Family than kioshk, but I never liked the show. The preachiness always took precedence over the jokes. No so with Soap imo. Everyone loves Bob Newhart. (the original show - I didn't love the later show "Newhart")

All in the Family did something that was meant to be provocative and then it stopped, opened it's eyes up wide, looked you in the eye and said, "what do you think about that? huh? Yeah, we just did that!"

In general I agree with most of this. Those Norman Lear shows were always a little ham-handed with the preachy, no doubt. I did like All in the Family at the time, but it obviously seems pretty dated when you watch it now. I hadn't formed any real political ideas of my own as a kid in the early 70s.

While Newhart wasn't one of the greatest sitcoms of all time like The Bob Newhart Show was, I still liked it quite a bit. Good solid 80s sitcom. I still contend that Bob Newhart remains the funniest human being to still walk the earth, with Bill Murray and Norm MacDonald right behind.

I can only tolerate Newhart in small doses. His stuttering/stammering shtick annoys the hell out of me and gets old really fast. It wouldn't be so bad if he didn't do it on every sentence he speaks.

While it may not have been one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, the final scene in the series finale is without a doubt the GOAT, ainec.

I do understand what you're saying but for some reason it doesn't bother me that much when he stammers. Something about those sad eyes and his stammering makes me laugh. I'm not sure why.

Don't agree with the Bill Murray thing. I'm going to guess he's a big *******. But I'm right there with you on Norm MacDonald. Omg I used to love that guy.

But Katy, Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters, his SNL stuff! He did that certain comedy vibe pretty much perfectly in my book. Note that the great David Letterman had Murray on both his first show and his last show. I can buy that he is very likely to be a jerk irl though.

I probably need to stop talking about live people in this dead people thread, I'll stop now.

Don't go dying on me now, Newhart!

Obvious from her avatar that Pepé Le Pew has ruined Katy for other men.

This guy Irv Refkin just died at 96. He was an American spy working for the OSS during the war, right in the middle of Nazi Germany. Talk about a hero.

Holy ****, what a guy. If they had made a movie about him, I wouldn't have believed it.

great read

Chuck Mosley was an original for sure. Not the greatest vocalist but he definitely put a stamp on their sound, and had his own thing going in an era where it was badly needed.

From April 25, 2017 until his death on November 13 of that year, Doerr was the oldest living former major league player. He was the last living person who played in the major leagues in the 1930s, and was the oldest of only three living people who made their MLB debut before U.S. involvement in World War II, the other two being Chuck Stevens and Fred Caligiuri
i live in Oregon and i didn't know Doerr lived in Junction City. it's interesting to realize how the passing of the old time baseball greats parallels that of WWII vets (of course they are now both in the same). Curious how many of the women who played in the AAGPBL are still with us.

There's a good David Halberstam book about Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Johnny Pesky driving down to Florida to visit an ailing Ted Williams before he died, very poignant the bond those four men had. The Teammates: A Portrait of a Friendship

edit: whoops, Doerr had to stay in Oregon to care for his ill wife so he missed the trip. He's still a big part of the book though.

Excellent read, and a good introduction to Halberstam as it's 600-800 pages shorter than any of his other stuff.

Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, known as “The Fight Doctor” for his role as Muhammad Ali’s ringside physician, died in his sleep this morning (Nov. 16) at his Miami home.

Pacheco, who was the lone surviving member of Ali’s training team and who would go on to a career as author, painter and Emmy-winning boxing analyst for NBC, was 89.

Mass murdering mafia pig & undisputed "Boss of all Bosses" Salvatore "Toto" Riina, head of the Sicilian mafia has died in prison.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-42022142

Riina aka "The Beast" (on account of his being too terrifying & vicious to even his fellow mafiosi) instigated the infamous Second Mafia War in Italy in the 80s, which led to an estimated 1,000 murders, with quite a few of them being committed in "The Room of Death" a ramshackle apt outside Sicily.
Riina himself is personally estimated of committing around 40 murders.

Riina also led an all out war against the Italian Republic complete with terrorist bombing campaigns & had several judges, prosecutors & Carabinieri generals murdered as well as a 15-year-old-boy whose arm was chopped off before he was murdered and also a 13-year-old boy who was dissolved in acid & kidnapped at 11.

Quote:
Even in detention, Riina ordered the murder of a 13-year-old boy kidnapped to try to prevent his father revealing information about the Mafia. The boy was strangled and his body dissolved in acid.
His most infamous murders were those of Italian Magistrate heroes Giovanni Falcone & his successor Paolo Borselino, who used to give his bodyguards the slip as he knew he was a dead man & didn't wish for his bodyguards to be taken out with him. Sadly six of them were along with Borselino who were murdered in a bombing.

RIP & in memory of Riina's many victims & good riddance to Riina. If there actually is a Hell, he's undoubtedly there, kickin' it with Hitler & Jeffery Dahmer.
