Saw them live in '02 at an outdoor Boston venue on a cool damp April night. Still one of the better shows I've been to.

Loved her voice - haunting and beautiful. Apparently she was bi-polar. I've friends with this same disorder. Anyway, she was only 46 - cause of death was ????

Almost certainly suicide. It's a shame, but society still doesn't treat depression and related mental illnesses as legitimate diseases, despite them taking the lives of more young-ish people than any other cause.

Rest in peace, lady with the beautiful tortured voice....

There is no reason to assume she killed herself! What the hell, Man?

She had health problems last year and had to cancel a tour, but was in the middle of recording and had just done a few performances.

Do you seriously not think that is the most likely reason? For someone in her mid 40s with no known serious illnesses other than mental? I read nothing about any other health problems other than back pain.

Did you somehow infer that I had anything but the greatest sympathy for her if that turns out to be the cause?

If you think my post implied I thought anything bad about the deceased, you are contributing to the stigma society attaches to brain illnesses.

Can we maybe not argue about this right now? I'm sure more details will emerge in the next couple of days, but for now just appreciate her music.

A unique voices of the 90s and singer of one of my all-time favorite songs.

One of my favorites, too, and the video is terrific, especially if you've seen Alphaville.

46 year old people die all of the time without having killed themselves. I just think it's rather presumptuous to assume that.

I agree, wtf? I would put it far from “almost certain”. Maybe 20-33%.

Definitely not the place for that argument. After they reveal the cause is the right time. That way everyone can pretend they knew.

She was a rock icon. Huge following in the US, but this is especially tough for the Irish. I can’t be the only one itt from that era who thought Zombie was beyond annoying. It’s a shame she’s gone.

Maybe dial it down a bit. This is a convo between tards in a vacuum.

Again, I don't see why anyone would be offended by my offering the likely cause of death and expressing sympathy for her illness after someone asks.

I very much enjoyed her music and the news saddens me greatly. I may have overreacted to Dominic's comments because (as others I'm sure have gathered), I can personally relate to her mental health issues and don't like them being stigmatized. Unfortunately, I can also just recently relate to the severe back pain and how it could push anyone over the edge.

Various news sources online state she attempted to commit suicide at least twice before, once in 2013 and once at some point before 2012.

I thought the song was annoying as well, but the band has plenty of other good songs and I recall the album was quite.

Even if I don't like the song, Zombie was something unique and unlike anything else that was out at the time.

Rob, I was not denigrating mental illness. I was only surprised that you immediately went to suicide as her cause of death. While that is certainly possible, I just hope it isn’t, because it would make her death even more tragic.

And Zombie was hugely important to Ireland at the time...so even though some of you think it’s annoying, it did a lot of good. Which is more than most songs can say.

Here's a nice bit on "Linger":

Dolores O’Riordan wasn’t the original singer for the Cranberries. Back in Limerick circa 1989, when they were still called the Cranberry Saw Us, some other guy was their frontman; when he left, he recommended O’Riordan through a friend of a friend. She was 19. As soon as she joined the band, they achieved greatness, instantly, like alchemy. In the Cranberries’ 1995 Rolling Stone cover story, she remembered a cassette that guitarist Noel Hogan gave her after their first meeting. “They were just chord sequences that kept repeating, and then there might be a change for two chords,” she said. “But I liked the way there was loads of freedom.” That was enough for her to write the words and melody to “Linger,” which is not just the definitive Cranberries song but one of the best pop songs of all time.

“Linger” is about having a crush that you wish you could forget about. The chorus is a complaint: “You’ve got me wrapped around your finger/ Do you have to let it linger?” Someone has let her down, and she’s annoyed with herself for still caring. Those are the words. But everything else in the song — O’Riordan’s impossibly tender vocals, the orchestral swoon, the just-this-side-of-shoegaze guitars — says otherwise. “Linger” is really about luxuriating in that let-down feeling, letting it swirl around you like special romantic stardust, hoping it lasts forever. Everyone who’s been 19 has felt this way at some point, like your unrequited love is simultaneously the most painful thing in the history of the world and the most beautifully meaningful. It’s one of the ultimate “hey, I made you a mixtape” songs, and it still sounds perfect in the streaming age. Even punks love this song, because “Linger” goes beyond genre, beyond time and space. If I were making a new version of the Voyager Golden Record, I’d totally put this on there. “Linger” is eternal.

I just saw the news about Tom Petty. What a total bummer. Apparently he had fentanyl, oxycodone, and sedatives in his system. Pain meds and benzos are a dangerous combination. Why do people ignore the warnings? Such a huge loss.

All the rage.

The medical examiner's news release said the autopsy found these drugs in Petty's system: fentanyl, oxycodone, acetyl fentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl, which are opioids; temazepam and alprazolam, which are sedatives; and citalopram, an antidepressant.
